Michael Stokes wrestled from years 1981-1984 at Tarboro High School with an overall record of 96 wins and just 4 losses. He was North Carolina’s 2nd 3-time State Champion. There was only one individual state champion at each weight in those years. After receiving a scholarship to wrestle for NC State he went on to win ACC wrestling titles in 1988 and 1989. He also receive the ACC Most Valuable Wrestler award for both of these years. His record of 68 wins 8 losses and 3 ties ( .879) is the best winning career winning percentage at NC State. He finished second at the NCAA’s at 126lbs in 1989 to Kendall Cross, who eventually won an Olympic Gold medal. Michael was a co-captain of the Wolfpack in 1989 and was recently named one of the ACC all time 50 greatest wrestlers as part as the conference’s 50th anniversary celebration. Stokes credits wrestling which “has provided me with a mental toughness that enables me to remove boundaries that stand in my way. Wrestling has given me the sheer determination to believe that I can conquer anything that I set my mind to do.” This determination has lead him to earn a second college degree in Accounting last December, 2002. He currently works as an auditor with the North Carolina Department of Revenue.
