Wrestling Singlet Debate – A Photographer’s Perspective
The debate around wrestling uniform has been going on in this country for the last 100+ years. Mark Palmer wrote a nice piece for Intermat on the history of the wrestling uniform in the US. This issue around the singlet is not new to our sport and it makes sense given the complexities of pairing a uniform to a hand-to-hand combat sport through the changing social mores and styles in a rapidly evolving country. As a photographer I’ve been reading the articles and comments with great interest, particularly Mark’s and Matt Krumrie’s USAW article. There’s also a NY Times piece on the subject. I also read Tim Foley’s weekly piece on Intermat and he’s unabashedly anti-singlet. I wanted to give my perspective as a long time wrestler, fan and photographer. I’m not overtly locked into the singlet for nostalgic reasons, my perspective comes from 1) trying to suss out the noise from actionable ideas, and 2) as a leading photographer of the sport I want the best photographs possible and a uniform change will impact my work. I feel there may be a need to parse some of the rhetoric as well, because as informative as the articles and dialog have been, Rest of the story at … http://www.wrestlersarewarriors.com/2016/11/30/wrestling-singlet-debate-a-photographers-perspective/?mc_cid=15347a172c&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Short Time makes its first ever trip to Brookings, South Dakota as the No. 20 South Dakota State Jackrabbits hosted third-ranked Iowa at Frost Arena on Friday, December 2. For South Dakota State, it was a chance to set a new attendance record — and boy did they ever. The South Dakota faithful put 4,087 into Frost Arena although their boys in blue fell to the Hawkeyes 29-8. The Iowa-South Dakota theme was consistent as Madison High School in South Dakota faced CL-GLR in a South Dakota vs. Iowa dual prior to the Jackrabbits and Hawkeyes. The angle there is SDSU two-time Division II champion Paul Konechne coaches at CL-GLR and his brother Marty coaches at Madison, about 40 minutes from Brookings. A war of words led to the matchup at the Division I championships and Coach Chris Bono got the brothers together to kick off afternoon with a back-and-forth dual. Head coach John Stutzman brings toughness, winning culture to U. of Buffalo’s program
The only fun thing about wrestling is getting your hand raised, according to UB head wrestling coach John Stutzman. However, after Stutzman’s first match in the seventh grade, his opponent had his hand raised. After losing the match, Stutzman went home crying.
His mom responded with a pointed message: “Toughen up. If you don’t like it, go be a swimmer.”
He knew he had to toughen up. “Then I got my hand raised and I was like ‘Oh man this is the best feeling I’ve ever had in my life,’” Stutzman said. Stutzman became UB’s head coach in 2013 and has brought a winning culture and toughness to the program. His cauliflower ear may be his most defining characteristic. Life has always revolved around wrestling for Stutzman and he has instilled that same passion into his young UB wrestlers. “I think I’m a better person because of him,” said sophomore Brett Perry. “He always tells us to do the right thing, just to be a better person, just being tougher and to not let things bother you. The culture he’s helped create has made me a better person and a better wrestler.” Stutzman wrestled at UB in the ’90s and made it his goal to one day become Buffalo’s head coach and raise the program into a national powerhouse. “I sat here in 1995, somebody asked me what my goal was. I told them that I was going to be the next head coach for the University at Buffalo,” Stutzman said. How Rutgers officials planned and executed the Batttle at the Birthplace
PISCATAWAY — Throughout the day on Nov. 14, 2015, when Iowa made collegiate wrestling history by drawing an NCAA-record 42,287 fans for an outdoor duel, Geoff Brown’s phone buzzed. The person messaging Rutgers’ chief marketing officer was Scott Goodale, the Scarlet Knights wrestling coach who yearned for his program to host an event like Iowa was staging. “When Iowa announced it months before, Scott immediately was like, ‘We gotta do that,’ ” Brown recalled. “And then, the day Iowa was doing it, Scott’s blowing my phone up, sending me pictures, ‘We gotta do this, we gotta do this.’ Finally I told him, ‘Scott, you know I’m in.’ ” Rest of the story at … http://www.nj.com/rutgersfootball/index.ssf/2016/11/the_story_of_how_rutgers_officials_planned_and_exe.html?mc_cid=f4062dd7c8&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
Bellarmine to host first-ever wrestling meet
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Wrestling is coming to Knights Hall.
At 7 p.m. (ET) on Wednesday, the Bellarmine University wrestling team will host its first-ever competition as the Knights will welcome Thomas (Ky.) More in a dual meet. Like Bellarmine, Thomas More is a first-year program. “I am very excited to say the least about this upcoming dual,” Bellarmine Coach Spencer Adams said. “We are in a very good position to make history with our first-ever home dual and our first-ever dual win. Our guys really want to win in front of the home crowd.” The meet will mark Bellarmine’s fifth competition. The Knights last competed on Nov. 19 at the Campbellsville (Ky.) Duals. They were defeated by all four of their opponents. The Knights were shorthanded but that didn’t mean there wasn’t some disappointment.
