Girls-only wrestling getting a statewide push

TDR Editor’s Notes ; Another look at the growth of girl’s wrestling in Nebraska
***********************************************
An effort to add girls wrestling as a winter sport in Nebraska is being made by the Nebraska School Activities Association, and a number of NSAA-sanctioned schools have been helping the cause by offering girls-only brackets at a number of tournaments across the state this season. The first girls-only brackets were wrestled at the High Plains Invitational in Columbus earlier this month, and Oakland-Craig offered the opportunity for girls to compete in their own brackets at their tournament this past weekend. Although wrestling has traditionally been a sport only boys competed in, more girls are getting involved in the sport at a young age and staying with it into their high school years. The growth of girls wrestling across the United States, along with recent Olympic success by the United States women’s team, has fueled an effort to encourage more girls to participate in the sport so that they can create a girls-only activity that would allow them to wrestle competition of their own gender.
Ron Higdon, an assistant director in charge of wrestling at the NSAA, said there is overwhelming support to bring girls-only wrestling into Nebraska.
