State Champion Beau Studebaker given the ‘Roy Heverly Award’ for the top Underclassmen Wrestler in Eastern North Carolina

Beau Studebaker, State Champion from East Carteret High School, was presented the 15th Roy Heverly Award as the top underclassman scholastic wrestler in eastern North Carolina. He was presented the trophy just before kick-off of East Carteret’s home football game. He was also awarded a TDR Top 12 shirt from the 2005-2006 season which was the season in which wrestling was restarted at East Carteret.
A fan was overheard exclaiming “Beau Knows Wrestling!” The home crowd cheered on their agreement to this. Then Beau started at Quarterback and successfully led his team to victory over conference rival Dixon High.
Beau has a career record of 121 wins and just13 losses. He has won his last 61 consecutive matches. Beau holds the school records for most tech falls in a season, most wins by a freshman and most wins by a sophomore. He is currently #4 most wins in school history. Has a state championship at 152 and one at 170 this past season, and has two regional championships as well. When asked Beau stressed that two of his toughest opponents last season were Carteret County rivals, Ryan Perry of Croatan and Ruffin Mancuso of West Carteret. Perry finished with a 3rd place medal in the 2A State Championships while Mancuso won 34 of his 37 other matches before ended his season prematurely due to an injury.

The award is named in honor of former state champion Roy Heverly, a 4 time state medalist at West Carteret and three time All-American at The University of North Carolina-Pembroke. The TakeDown Report, an on-line publication promotes amateur wrestling in eastern North Carolina, sponsors these Awards. “These awards recognize the most successful wrestlers in the area each year.” Fleming noted, “It encourages the young men from the teams in the eastern part of the state with another opportunity for others to realize the hard work, determination and discipline it takes to be a top wrestler,” he added. The TDR also ranks wrestlers in a TDR Top 12 List that is displayed on the TDR Blog page. The TDR is in its’ 20th year of involvement and publicity of amateur wrestling in North Carolina.
