Lifelong friends sign to rival wrestling programs

TDR Editor’s Notes; Both wrestlers earned TDR Top 12 Plaques as the top wrestler in eastern N.C. in their weight class. The James Johnson Award will be presented to Derby at First Flight on June 2nd. More details about that later.

Jeremiah Derby and Arien Leigh have been friends since before they even knew how to say the word. The First Flight High School seniors went to daycare together as toddlers and became fast friends. In their middle school years, they met again – on a wrestling mat. The duo drifted apart when Jeremiah moved to Currituck for middle school. That’s when Arien started wrestling, a sport Jeremiah had been involved in since he was 4 years old. One day, they faced off at a wrestling tournament, where Jeremiah pinned his childhood friend “in 14 seconds flat,” Arein said. “It was the quickest pin of the tournament,” he laughed. As they leave First Flight High School, the friends are going their separate ways again — Jeremiah to University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Arien to Duke University, both recruited into their school’s wrestling programs. Both are state wrestling champions, Jeremiah winning his second state title this year and Arien a runner up. And they fully expect to meet again on the mat.

Notable Offseason DI Transfer

TDR Editor’s Notes; The following is from an article by Earl Smith on the Open Mat. He covers some of the most notable transfers which could stir things up in the team race. The first one is of special interest to local wrestling fans.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The spring is typically a busy season for transfers and this year is no different. In fact, it seems like more high profile wrestlers are on the move than ever. Six of the top ten teams at the 2018 NCAA Championships added a notable transfer and below is a list of ten significant wrestlers that will be appearing in new singlets during the upcoming 2018-19 season.
Justin Oliver, NC State – 149 LBS (Previous school Central Michigan)
The Wolfpack fill a potential hole at 149 lbs with Oliver a 2016 All-American who has a year of eligibility remaining. Justin will be looking for help getting back onto the podium after finishing in the round of 12 in each of the last two seasons. With the graduation of three-time NCAA champion Zain Retherford, 149 could be up for grabs, and if Oliver is in contention, then NC State has a good shot at competing for another NCAA team trophy.
