R.C. LaHaye already knows what type of culture he wants to build at Lander. “Kind of the mission statement for our program is, we’re looking to build a Division II wrestling powerhouse that consistently produces top-notch citizens, students and wrestlers, in that specific order,” LaHaye said. Now he just needs wrestlers.
LaHaye became Lander’s first wrestling coach Tuesday, filling the position after four seasons as associate head coach at Newberry. LaHaye said he is familiar with the high school wrestling circuit in the Lakelands and hopes to tap into the area’s talent pool in building the program. “I’ve been running camps at Newberry, I’m familiar with a lot of the schools in the area and the coaches,” LaHaye said. “I’m looking to strengthen that network and really build that program with a lot of local athletes.” LaHaye also spent seven years at Grand Canyon University, where he served as head coach and helped launch the school’s wrestling program in 2007.
