Editor’s Notes; Sadden by this. ‘Lo’ was a good man. Generous, helpful and kind hearted. Will miss him in our community.

Family and friends are preparing to say goodbye to a local leader who died last week.
Lorenzo Carmon, 58, died Wednesday. He was born in Pitt County in 1959.
Carmon spent nearly all his professional career in local government service in Tarboro. Besides family, perhaps the man who misses him most is his protege, Edgecombe County Manager Eric Evans. Carmon became county manager in August 2001 and hired Evans as his assistant manager in December of the same year.
“I’m very fortunate to have worked for him all those years,” Evans said. “He was not only great to work for, he was a great man.” The economic recruitment success Edgecombe County is now experiencing is due in great part to the foundation Carmon laid by investing in Kingsboro Industrial Park, Evans said. “He helped us all get to a better place,” Evans said. Carmon served 14 years as planning director then assistant town manager before becoming county manager in 2001. He had his work cut out for him, completing the recovery work from the 1999 flood caused by Hurricane Floyd. Carmon retired in September 2015 after more than three decades working for the county. He said the flood recovery was one of his major accomplishments during his tenure as county manager.
Upon retirement, Carmon said he wanted to go fishing, but the long-time civil servant soon found his way to being the town manager of Pinetops — and working on the recovery after Hurricane Matthew in 2016. Pinetops Commissioner Brenda Barnes said she is praying for Carmon’s family and hopes they find comfort knowing he’s at rest in the loving arms of a just God. A viewing will be held tonight from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Hemby-Willoughby Chapel in Tarboro. Carmon’s funeral is set for 11 a.m. Monday at Keihin Auditorium on the Tarboro campus of Edgecombe Community College. Burial will follow in the Evans Family Cemetery in Winterville.
