W&M looks to ex-wrestler for contagious countermove after being outscored 113-17 in past two games
WILLIAMSBURG — In its past two games, William & Mary has been outscored 113-17. The Tribe fell 62-17 at Virginia Tech before losing at James Madison 51-0 last Saturday.
This seems to be the time for a guy who wants to get into mixed martial arts following graduation to demonstrate a defiant countermove that’s contagious.
Center Nick Wimmer, a 6-foot-2, 305-pound junior, won more than 150 matches as a high school wrestler in Winston-Salem, N.C., and sees martial arts as an extension of what he did on the mat and what he does for the Tribe (1-2, 0-1 CAA).
Wimmer is the only returning starter on an offensive line that’s struggled to come around, in part because of the competition W&M has faced. JMU, ranked No. 2 in the FCS, registered nine tackles for losses against the Tribe, as did Virginia Tech.
“Hopefully, as they gain experience and keep working together and kind of trust each other and trust themselves and not let things disrupt them … then it’s just a matter of maturity,” coach Jimmye Laycock, whose Tribe play their home opener against No. 24 Colgate (3-0) on Saturday at 6 p.m., said of his offensive linemen.
Wimmer trained in the martial arts while wrestling in high school and also has participated in Beach Wrestling, a branch of USA Wrestling. Beach Wrestling involves competition in a circle on sand. The object is to remove your opponent from the circle, or take him down. “If I had to say anything to high school kids, especially offensive linemen, defensive linemen, I would say, ‘Wrestle in high school,’ ” Wimmer said. His recommendation is related to the conditioning required of wrestlers, and the balance, leverage, strength and strategy necessary to prevail on the mat, sand and field.
