Wrestling class helped Michael Davis find starting role with Jack Boys

TDR Editor’s Notes; Love these articles as they verify what we have long time stated that wrestling makes a football player better.

COSTA MESA, Calif. — Los Angeles Chargers coach Anthony Lynn saw something special when Michael Davis joined the team last year during an offseason workout as an undrafted rookie out of BYU.  Fast forward to a year later and with Trevor Williams dealing with a nagging knee issue, and Davis has become the newest member of the self-proclaimed “Jack Boys,” starting opposite Pro Bowler Casey Hayward.

“He just needed reps,” Lynn said. “He has the size, the speed and he’s playing more physical. I like what I’m seeing from Michael right now.”  Teams have targeted the inexperienced Davis, but he has held up. Davis has recorded 23 tackles, two pass breakups and a forced fumble in three starts this season. He also has four tackles on special teams.  At 6-foot-2 and 195 pounds, Davis caught the eyes of Chargers’ scouts by running an impressive 4.34-second, 40-yard time at his pro day last year.  Rest of the story at http://www.espn.com/blog/los-angeles-chargers/post/_/id/25327/chargers-michael-davis-thriving-in-new-starting-role-with-jack-boys

Colstrip Nakoda Siegel commits to Campbell University

COLSTRIP — One of Montana’s top-ranked wrestlers will head to the Division I ranks next year.

Colstrip senior Nakoda Siegel, last year’s Montana Class B-C champion at 170 pounds, has given his commitment to Campbell University in Buies Creek, North Carolina. He and coaches confirmed the commitment to MTN Sports on Thursday evening.

“They flew me out there Sunday (Nov. 4), right after the game in Big Timber, so I went to Billings Saturday night and they flew me out,” Siegel said Friday morning. “(The team) was actually at the Hokie Open (at Virgina Tech), so I didn’t see them until next day, but they took me out for breakfast, showed me around campus. I’m looking into (majoring in) physical therapy and they have an awesome facility, it’s pretty sweet.”  One of Montana’s highest wrestling recruits this winter, Siegel says the coaching staff, a who’s who of former wrestlers, helped secure the commitment to join the Fighting Camels’ program. Head coach Cary Kolat, a former United States national champion and Olympic team member, is in his fifth season as the head coach at Campbell, sending a program-record five student-athletes to the 2017 NCAA Championships.  The Camels’ coaching staff also boasts a two-time national champion and three-time all-American in Dean Heil, two-time all-American in Scotti Sentes and three-time national runner-up Mike Evans.  Rest of the story at https://montanasports.com/high-school/wrestling/2018/11/09/colstrip-wrestler-nakoda-siegel-commits-to-campbell-university/?mc_cid=30b74f007b&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

New city and arena, new girls duals among exciting upgrades at King of the Mountain, Nov. 30 – Dec. 2

By Gary Abbott, USA Wrestling | Nov. 23, 2018, 12:31 p.m. (ET)

This year’s Folkstyle Tour of America event in Colorado, the King of the Mountain, has developed numerous changes which are designed to improve and expand this popular youth folkstyle event.

The King of the Mountain has moved to Olympic City USA, Colorado Springs, Colo., and will be held in the historic Broadmoor World Arena, which is the current home of Colorado College hockey and has hosted numerous quality music concerts and sports competitions. The growing competition is set for Nov. 30 – Dec. 2.

Like all of the Folkstyle Tour of America events, there will be girls wrestling divisions included in the tournament this year. However, what makes this year’s event even more exciting for youth girls is the addition of the Queen of the Mountain girls dual meet event on Friday to join the King of the Mountain Duals. This is an invitational event, but the turnout of girls dual meet teams for this inaugural season has met and exceeded expectations.

Last year’s King of the Mountain, which was held in Castle Rock, Colo., had over 1,100 wrestlers and this year’s should be even bigger. There is a cap for main event registration at 1,000 participants and for true beginners at 400 athletes, and there still remains space for athletes to sign up during the final week of registration.  Rest of the story at https://www.teamusa.org/USA-Wrestling/Features/2018/November/23/King-of-Mountain-moves-to-COS-and-is-expanded?mc_cid=de9eb9ad36&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

A natural place for drama: Cathedral City holds wrestling meet on school’s theater stage

TDR Editor’s Notes;   While this is a bit west of our coverage area the creative idea deserves coverage and recognition.

To pin or not to pin, that was the question Tuesday night at Cathedral City High School.  The performing arts stage, usually reserved for plays and band concerts, was transformed into a wrestling match as Lions wrestling coach Jody Davis continued his string of creative stunts to boost recognition for the wrestling program.   William Shakespeare never saw moves like these. And the reviews are in. It was a hit!

“I thought it went really well,” Davis said. “I was nervous about it, but the administration and the theater director were very supportive. It was a full crowd for a wrestling meet. I’m happy.”

This marks the second consecutive year Davis has kicked off the season with a bit of a stunt to drum up interest in the wrestling squad. Last year, the Lions set up mats outdoors on the football field and wrestled under the lights.

his time it was a doubleheader in the theater as the boys went first. Rancho Mirage outdueled the Lions for a 45-30 win. The girls’ match, pitting two of the deepest and best teams in the desert, was the spotlight match. The host Lions took that one 54-18.

But the setting made for, appropriately enough, increased drama. Anyone that follows high school sports knows that wrestling makes for some of the loudest cheering moments from the crowd. Now put those loud moments of near-pins, or dramatic reversals in the perfect acoustic setting of a theater and the excitement is heightened.  Rest of the story at https://www.desertsun.com/story/sports/high-school/wrestling/2018/11/14/natural-place-drama-cathedral-city-holds-wrestling-meet-schools-theater-stage/1979613002/?mc_cid=fe2d41468f&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
