Elliott Named SoCon Wrestler of the Week

BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State’s Michael Elliott, who has moved into the Mountaineers’ dual meet lineup for the first time in his career as a senior, was named the Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week on Wednesday.
Elliott’s team-leading 13 victories include impressive wins at 165 pounds against Oklahoma’s Jeremy Thomas on Sunday and Ohio’s Colt Yinger on Nov. 30 in his dual meet debut, part of a 2-1 mark while in App State’s lineup.
A local product from Jefferson, N.C., Elliott won a 5-4 decision against Oklahoma’s Thomas. Elliott had 36 seconds of riding time on his side when he erased a 4-2 deficit on a takedown in the final minute of the third period. From that position, he was able to remain atop Thomas for the rest of the period, get a tiebreaking point by pushing his riding time over a minute and prevent Thomas from earning a point with an escape. Afterward, Elliott jogged toward the bench and was congratulated with hand slaps from smiling head coach JohnMark Bentley and other staff members.
Elliott was named the Male Athlete of the Year during his time at Ashe County High School, where he won a 2-A state wrestling title as a senior and also earned recognition as an all-conference defensive back in football. He attended Western Carolina with hopes of playing football for the Catamounts before transferring to App State and walking on to the wrestling team. “I knew my heart was still in wrestling,” Elliott said.
A criminal justice major, he had planned to have the end of his college wrestling career coincide with a spring 2018 graduation.

UNC-Pembroke Keeps Momentum Going, Routs Belmont Abbey

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke wrestling team registered 18 takedowns and six near-falls over nine individual matchups and used five bonus-point victories to cruise past visiting Belmont Abbey, 31-13, on Wednesday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
It was the second-straight dual meet victory for the Braves (3-2) who improved to 15-2 all-time in the series with the Crusaders. It was just the first loss of the season for Belmont Abbey (2-1) who has not tasted victory in Pembroke since Nov. 17, 2007.
All-American Nick Daggett got the fireworks started without stepping foot on the mat as Belmont Abbey spotted the Braves six points on the shoulders of a forfeit at 125 pounds. Freshman Ronnie Pietro led 14-0 at the end of the first period of his matchup with Aaron Zebrauskas and made it an 11-0 lead for UNCP on the team scoreboard with a technical fall just 11 seconds into the second stanza.
Unbeaten Troy Gregor got the Crusaders on the board with a 15-6 major decision at 141 pounds, but newcomer Kaleb Warner swung the momentum back to the Black & Gold with a pin of John Gahagan just 16 seconds into the second period of the 149-matchup. Tyler Makosy’s 15-6 major decision over Grant Finkbeiner minutes later padded UNCP’s lead out to 21-4, and all-American Rodney Shepard’s 8-2 upset win over ninth-ranked Greg Hilliard at 165 pounds pushed that advantage out to 20 points.
Andrew Pegram temporarily stopped the bleeding for the visitors with a 19-12 decision at 174 pounds, but Brandon Sloop clinched the outcome with a 13-5 major decision over Dawson Satterfield at 184 pounds, and Andrew Colborn added the garland to the victory with a 3-1 decision over Lucas Scarlett in the 197-pound matchup.

ASK KOLAT: What Coaching Style Did You Prefer? What Type of Coach Are You?

Understanding The Athlete

Cary Kolat responds to questions about coaching styles he preferred when competing and how that translated to his own coaching style today. Being a high energy and high-intensity person, Cary didn’t need a wrestling coach who matched his energy. He didn’t need someone who was going to be slapping him in the face trying to get him ready for a match – he was already doing it himself. To have a coach who was attempting to do so would almost be a distraction for Kolat. What he needed in his corner was a calming presence. This could stem from Cary’s personality but also from the way he began wrestling. His father was a believer of coaching in the room and not mat-side and that shaped his mindset during a match.

The Calm, Cool Approach

The first coach Kolat connected with was his high school coach. Ron Headlee, was an elementary school gym teacher at the time and knew Cary for many years. Headlee seldom yelled or got upset. He was a very calming guy and was exactly what Kolat needed. When Cary got too riled up or frantic to the point of making mistakes, Headlee was the one able to reign him in and slow down. Once Cary left high school and entered the college scene he didn’t feel as if there was another coach who he really connected with and had a big impact on his career. When he went international is when he felt he got that real connection in his corner back.

Reenan Named ACC Wrestler of the Week for Third Time

Notched a top-three win over Nebraska to move up to #4 in the rankings at 184 pounds

RALEIGH, N.C. – For the third time this season (in seven total weeks), and for the second consecutive week, NC State’s R-So. Nick Reenan was named the ACC Wrestler of the Week. At 184 pounds against Nebraska in Reynolds this weekend, Reenan took out 2018 All-American #3 Taylor Ventz 8-6. Reenan scored all three of the takedowns in the bout, and a late reversal secured the win. With the Wolfpack down 14-3 after the first five bouts against #11 Nebraska, Reenan’s win was the first of four in the final five after the intermission as NC State completed the 18-17 comeback win to improve to 6-0 on the season. Reenan improves to 7-0 on the season, 3-0 versus ranked foes, and 2-0 against top-10 opponents. Reenan was named co-ACC Wrestler of the Week this week, sharing the award with UNC’s Chip Ness who also scored an 6-4 win over Ventz the night before Reenan.
