Gophers Defeat No.17 Illinois behind Two Pins and Two Majors
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. –The No 7 Minnesota Golden Gophers took down No.17 Illinois 26-15 on the backs of six victories, including two pins and two major decisions. The victory is the Gophers ninth of the season and their second in Big Ten competition. They bounce back from a 24-10 loss to No.4 Iowa.
157-pound Steve Bleise battled No.13 Eric Barrone for the third consecutive season and for the third time came out on top. Bleise secured the cradle and pinned Barrone in 6 minutes and 17 seconds. After heavyweight Gable Steveson notched three first period takedowns he finished things off quickly with a pin on the edge of the mat for his fourth fall of the year.

Gophers down Northwestern 29-12 for Third B1G Win
EVANSTON, Ill. – The Golden Gophers wrestling team took down Big Ten foe Northwestern 29-12 with two pins and seven overall bout victories for their second victory of the weekend.
After forfeiting the first bout due to injury the Gophers started hot with two consecutive first period pins from 133-pound Ethan Lizak and 141-pound Mitch McKee.
With his 22nd straight victory Steveson has passed head coach Brandon Eggum and volunteer assistant coach Zach Sanders who both had 21 straight victories in their career. Steveson is now tied with Jared Lawrence and Brock Lesnar at 23rd on the all-time list.

Gophers Take Down Wisconsin in Latest Border Battle
MADISON, Wisc. – The No 7 Minnesota Golden Gophers defeated the No.16 Wisconsin Badgers in the 96th edition of the border rivalry 27-13 to increase their all-time series lead to 62-32-1. It’s the Gophers third straight victory and they remain undefeated away from home with a 5-0 record on the road and a 4-0 record at neutral sites. The 11 victories is the most in one season under head coach Brandon Eggum.
“I’m pleased with the performance and I love the effort,” Eggum said. “It was a great effort out there and we kept up our attacking ways.” With his 23rd consecutive win to start his career heavyweight Gable Steveson joins Tim Hartung and Jason Davids at 21st on the all-time list. Steveson started quickly against No.11 Trent Hillger with a takedown and nearfall before continuing to attack in the final period to secure a major decision.
