Wildcats Capture Third-Straight NEWA Dual Title
PROVIDENCE, RI – The Johnson & Wales University wrestling team showed why it’s the top team in the New England region on Sunday. The Wildcats rolled through three opponents to claim their third-straight NEWA Duals title at the Rhode Island Convention Center. The trio of victories improved JWU’s record to 17-4. It was the Wildcats seventh NEWA title, which is three more than the next closest school. Johnson & Wales opened the event by beating Williams, 46-8, before dismantling Springfield, 48-0. The Wildcats won the title by beating #24 Coast Guard 31-9.
In the opening match against Williams, Johnson & Wales won the first six matches before the Ephs got a point. That run included pins from Christopher Caban at 133 pounds and the number one 149-pounder Da’mani Burns as well as tech falls from #2 Jay Albis at 125 pounds and 157-pounder Brady Robin. Pins at 141 pounds by No. 7 Joe Ferinde and Burns pushed JWU’s lead to 20-0 over Springfield. Thomas Grippi had a pin at 157 pounds and JWU wrapped up the match with consecutive pins by No. 5 Michael DiNardo at 197 pounds and Tommy Wrzesian at 285 pounds.
