Laney wrestling knocks off West Brunswick

North Brunswick edges New Hanover, while South Brunswick squeezes by Ashley
Laney 57, West Brunswick 24
The Buccaneers stayed undefeated in the Mideastern Conference and are now one win away from their third league title in four seasons after a comfortable victory over the Trojans. Connor Johnson, Marcus Mondragon, Kisaiah Ferguson, Max Asberry, Carveon Harris, Cael Willis and Emmanuel Bell all won with pins for Laney Wednesday. Jayden Harrison also was victorious with a minor decision for the Buccaneers. Winners from West Brunswick were Carey Sweed, Sae’Vyon McCray, Christian Zickefoose and Matthew Smith. All four Trojans won with a pin. Laney will look to clinch the MEC title next week at home against South Brunswick.

North Brunswick 33, New Hanover 30
Bryan Aragao, Carlos Meza and Sean Panas all recorded pin victories that helped the Scorpions escape with a narrow victory over the Wildcats. Malik Law was the only other wrestler for North Brunswick to win a match, with the rest of the Scorpions’ victories coming from New Hanover forefeits. On the other side, Riley Monteath, Atila Dalmasi and Mateo Meehan each won with pins for the Wildcats.

South Brunswick 36, Ashley 35
The Screaming Eagles put up a valiant fight, but four forfeits proved too much to overcome as the Cougars earned a win that keeps them alive in the race for the Mideastern Conference title.

Laney finished in first place out of 20 teams with 188 points, topping second-place Jack Britt by 33.

Mark Samuel, Seth Thomas, Marcus Mondragon and Cael Willis all were individual winners.

Samuel won the 106-pound weight class with a 7-6 victory in the final against Nazir Wynn from Carolina Forest (S.C.). Thomas won the 126 bracket by beating Riverside’s Joshua Cox 4-2 in the final.

Mondragon was dominant in the 138 final with a 9-3 win over Western Harnett’s Jack Taylor. Willis pinned his way to the 170 final before topping Cary’s Wolfram 5-1 for the title.

Connor Johnson was the Buccaneers’ only other medalist, finishing in thrid place at 132.

Jolly Rogers Invitational at Corinth Holders

Topsail had a standout showing Saturday with a second-place finish, sandwiched in between first-place Cadinal Gibbons and third-place Fike.

The Pirates didn’t have any winners, but Ben Baker (113), Daniel Diaz (120), Ethen Rivenbark (126) and Devon Bell were all runners-up.
