KSHSAA (Kansas) votes to sanction girls wrestling

TOPEKA, Kan. (KWCH) Starting next year, female wrestlers in high school will have a post season tournament recognized by the state. Mya Kretzer, a senior wrestler at McPherson High School, has had a lot of success in her sport. She’s got the varsity letter patches, and the all-american medals to prove it. “I just wanted to make it to boys state because if I placed there, I could be recognized on the wall at my high school,” Kretzer said.

Kretzer is one of the top wrestlers in the country, she’s won three unofficial state championships but none that are technically recognized by the Kansas High School Athletics Association. “It happened and I was just crying but I didn’t even know what I felt, honestly,” Kretzer said. “There was just so much ingrained in my head.” Kretzer says that feeling came after KSHSAA voted 63-2 in favor of making girls wrestling a sanctioned sport. This will now add a state championship division in 2020, and will be the first new sport added in Kansas since 2005. According to the rule, there will be a two year transition period to permit girls to wrestle in either girls’ or boys’ lineups. Following that period, girls will only wrestle against girls and participate in the girls postseason.

The change goes into effect next season but for Kretzer’s dad and coach, Doug Kretzer, this has been four years of work finally paying off. “At times it was tough, there’s no ‘out of the box template’ on how to make a big change,” her dad said. “You’re trying to figure out what KSHSAA wants, you’re trying to prove to them that it is a valid cause, and there are a lot of unknowns.” Kansas becomes the 15th state to sanction girls wrestling. Alirez wins Junior Dan Hodge Trophy

By Mike Finn
Winning four state championships in Colorado and many other national honors was not as easy as it looked for Andrew Alirez the past four years. After all, the nation’s top-ranked wrestler, who pinned 98 foes in compiling a 160-1 record — and flattened 29 of 37 foes in an undefeated senior season — in his career at Greeley Central High School, dealt with a broken thumb early in his junior season. He also got a chance to see how his father, whose first name is also Andrew and served as both a coach and drilling partner throughout much of his high school career, overcame shoulder and knee injuries. “That just shows you have to have that dog in you,” said the younger Alirez, whose nickname is “Boo Boo” after hanging out as a child with his father, whose nickname was Yogi. “When we do drill, we go hard. He’s a go-er. He won’t stop, which makes me push harder.

“(He also showed me) you have to find that way to push through (any pain). That’s something that is going to help me in the college season. It’s impossible to go through a whole college season without something going wrong.” And it’s that fortitude that also earned the future University of Northern Colorado wrestler the 2019 WIN Magazine Junior Dan Hodge Trophy, which is presented annually by the AAU to the nation’s most dominant high school wrestler and named after Dan Hodge, the three-time Oklahoma national champion.

By JD Rader, USA Wrestling | April 25, 2019
33 champions, including 14 freestyle champions from yesterday, were crowned Masters Greco-Roman champions at the U.S. Open today. Scott Loescher, Ike Okoli, David Yi, Jordan Humphrey, Rudy James, Carson Gainey, Kevin Pine, Octavius Bellamy, Matthew Robertson, Igor Ilin, Dan Chaid, Bruce Moe, and Jack Schwartz doubled up as both freestyle and Greco-Roman champions.

“I just had a good day,” said Pine, a 2018 Masters World champion. “It’s like a family reunion out here. It’s a great group of guys with camaraderie, but it’s still a competition.” Former Masters World champions Chaid and Bellamy won their Greco-Roman titles without giving up a point. In the premiere match of the day, Stephen Horton was forced to injury default to Domenico Piccinini when he dislocated his shoulder. Horton was winning 5-4 at the time.
