The Top Storyline
They didn’t get exactly what they wanted, but a strong and balanced performance at the 2019 Cadet World Championships left the American women’s team smiling. Half of the team earned medals: Sterling Dias (40 kg), Cristelle Rodriguez (49 kg), and Skylar Hattendorf (57 kg) won silver; Kylie Welker (61 kg) and Amit Elor (69 kg) scored bronze.
The US team finished third with 106 points behind a powerful Japanese team that compiled 195 points with six champions. China finished in second with 127 points and one champion.
Although she finished with a silver medal, Sterling Dias was the talk of the tournament. Her finals match against Komal Komal of India was a 4-4 shootout. Dias scored the first takedown, Komal the second. Dias scored the third takedown then Kamal scored the deciding takedown late in the match to win on criteria. The 2018 Cadet World bronze medalist moved one spot up the podium from last year but she moved into first place as the most popular wrestler at the tournament — male or female.
