Seven Minutes with Matt Lindland presented by College Wrestler Recruiting

Seven Minutes is a series of interviews with top wrestling coaches and athletes. Most of the question-and-answer sessions last roughly seven minutes. Hence the name. Matt Lindland won a silver medal at the 2000 Olympics and is the head Greco-Roman National Team Coach at USA Wrestling. You can listen to the entire interview above or read the transcript below.
If you could take what you know now and have a conversation with yourself at the age of 15, what advice would you give yourself?
Have more fun and relax. Don’t put so much stress on yourself. That was the biggest thing that held me back from performing at my highest potential was the fact that I wanted it so bad and it stressed me out. I didn’t focus on all the little things it takes to perform at that level.
Let’s go back to recruiting when you were in high school. What do you remember about the process and what were your top three schools? You’re unique in that you went to Clackamas and then Nebraska. Take us through that journey.
I didn’t really get recruited. I wasn’t one of the blue chip guys so that’s why I really went to Clackamas. I won a national title there and got recruited by a few colleges and at that time I wanted to get out of the West Coast and get into a Big 10 or a Big Eight kind of conference at that time.
Let’s say wrestling has one governing body and you are the president. What would you want to change?
More funding.  Rest of the interview story at
