Mat Talk Short Time Shots: 11-03-19
By Jason Bryant
The first weekend of major college wrestling came and went, so now that you’ve given up on your college football team for the season, because you know the College Football Playoff is going to put at least one team in there that didn’t earn it, this is Short Time Shots, a mostly daily look at the scores and more that went on today in the world of wrestling, I’m award winning yadda yadda yadda Jason Bryant.
In Duals:
Limited schedule, so we’ll lead off with the only Division I dual on the docket, which saw North Dakota State beat visiting CSU Bakersfield 24-9 in Fargo. No confirmation if the winner got to pick where to eat dinner, but I’m sure Roger Kish would make his former coworker Manny Rivera eat somewhere nice, not like super fried Turf fare. Iowa Hawkeyes’ Lee pointed in the right direction
MOUNT VERNON, Iowa — Spencer Lee spent several Saturday mornings this fall working in fan assistance at Iowa football games, working in the neighborhood surrounding Kinnick Stadium. Decked out in the brightly-colored shirts the group wears as it fulfills hours needed to complete a class project, the two-time NCAA wrestling champion has largely gone unnoticed while directing fans to the correct stadium entrance or the nearest restroom facilities. “With his glasses on, he looks just like any other student straight out of the library,’’ Iowa coach Tom Brands said. U.S. Congressional Wrestling Caucus Champions Women’s Wrestling
Washington, D.C. – – Wrestling builds leaders, and it was women’s wrestling being celebrated and discussed at the Rayburn House Office Building on Wednesday morning. The Wrestle Like A Girl organization and USA Wrestling planned an ‘Empowering Girls to Lead Through Sport’ breakfast in cooperation with Congressman Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) and the Bi-Partisan Congressional Wrestling Caucus. Dialogue centered on characteristics learned in wrestling applied to life, leadership, leveraging sport as a vehicle for socioeconomic mobility, and the need for legislative support in the efforts toward sanctioning girls wrestling in the 32 states without a championship. The bi-partisan wrestling caucus was established in March 2019 through the stewardship of Captain Adam Chamie. Collectively, the caucus has pledged to support issues within the wrestling community.
Special guests from the wrestling community included 2019 women’s freestyle wrestling world champions, Jacarra Winchester, Tamyra Mensah-Stock and Adeline Gray. 2004 Olympian Tela O’Donnell Bacher and 2008 Olympian and U.S. National Women’s Freestyle Assistant Coach Clarissa Chun joined them.
Wrestling Builds Leaders
Congressman and Caucus Chair Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) sketched deep parallels between wrestling and success in life. “. . . In wrestling you’re going to lose some matches, and you may lose them right in the middle of a tournament . . . you suck it up and get back on the mat because someone else is going to kick you if you don’t,” said Mullin. “You gotta get over your failures fast, learn from your mistakes and move on. That is life, and that is the same thing that wrestling teaches you. In your successes, celebrate them and go back to work the next day because you’ve got someone else coming after you; that is life. Life is tough—you’re going to have successes, and you’re going to have failures, and if you can learn to be successful in a competitive wrestling room you will learn to be successful in life, too.” A study conducted by Ernst & Young consultants revealed that 94% of female c-suite executives have played a sport. Wrestle Like A Girl’s Founder and Executive Director, Sally Roberts, stated, “Wrestling teaches girls how to own their voice, their space and their bodies.” Rest of the story and pictures at https://www.transitionwrestling.com/u-s-congressional-wrestling-caucus-champions-womens-wrestling/?mc_cid=3b455adea1&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Edinboro Fighting Scots Win First-Ever Mid-American Conference Dual while Going 3-0 at Kent State Duals
KENT, Ohio – In one day the Edinboro wrestling team eclipsed its win total from the 2018-19 season. Competing in the Kent State Duals to open the 2019-20 season, the Fighting Scots posted wins over Kent State (29-6), Mercyhurst North East (52-0), and Ashland (36-3) to sprint to a 3-0 start. Just as notable is the fact Edinboro won its first-ever Mid-American Conference dual with the victory over Kent State, an established member of the MAC. And for second-year head coach Matt Hill, the win came against the man he served under as an assistant coach for 11 years, KSU’s Jim Andrassy. A year ago, Kent State defeated Edinboro 26-12. Edinboro got the day started by winning eight of ten bouts against Kent State. Most noteworthy was a battle between two of the top 174-pounders in the MAC. KSU’s Andrew McNally came in ranked third in the MAC preseason poll, while Jacob Oliver of Edinboro was fourth. Both were NCAA qualifiers a year ago, with Mcnally making the trip at 184 lbs. Oliver would win by fall at 3:15.
