Female wrestlers to get own tournament in W.Va.

TDR Note; More wrestling opportunities for wrestlers.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
A post circulated on the Internet the last few days, announcing that the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission and the wrestling coaches association have approved a girls “state” wrestling tournament. The news was seen on WVMat.com.
The event, which will be held at Parkersburg South High School on Feb. 8, won’t be an official state tournament, but it will instead be held on a trial basis to gauge interest and participation of female wrestlers. In a sense, it will be similar to the Girls Championship held during golf season. “There are a lot of really good girls that wrestle,” Spring Mills coach Anthony Regalbuto said. Regalbuto, a father of two girls who has been active as a coach both at the youth and high school levels, has seen how almost strictly wrestling boys affects girls who are giving the sport a try. “When the kids start to hit puberty, it’s hard for a girl to compete with the boys,” he said, noting coaches can really see the difference when athletes hit ages between 10-12 years old. “To be a good wrestler until you’re 12 and boys have hit puberty and knock you down, it kind of knocks them out of the sport at times. Now you’re going up against girls. It’s huge for the sport. We’ve seen some girl wrestlers dominate at an early age.” Rest of the story at https://www.journal-news.net/journal-news/female-wrestlers-to-get-own-tournament-in-w-va/article_0fbba96e-0607-5a97-8be8-5304dc5c7270.html?mc_cid=60e5e7ba5b&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Corey’s Stories: Olympic redshirts add another layer of intrigue to the college season

A few things happen this time of year on college campuses across the country.  Leaves boast in hues of orange, red and yellow glory.  Freshmen learn the most expensive, per-ounce items in the world include platinum, diamonds and college textbooks. Wrestlers champ at the bit. The 2019-20 season has arrived. This year, “Olympic redshirt” returns to the college wrestling lexicon, with a collection of collegiate elites sitting out the season to hone their international wrestling skills.  Asked about advantages to focusing solely on freestyle, Derek Fix — father of Oklahoma State NCAA finalist Daton Fix — explained: “Daton’s ultimate goal as a wrestler is to be an Olympic champion,” Fix said. “The opportunity only comes around every four years.
“It only benefits the ones who have a structured plan. Wrestling is wrestling, and I truly believe the grind of the folkstyle season helps the United States’ wrestlers in freestyle, and certain freestyle techniques, especially on your feet, make you a better folkstyle wrestler.”
Jesse Thielke took the Olympic redshirt in 2016. The former Wisconsin grappler is a supporter of anyone considering the option.  Rest of the story at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1572816359057&twSessionId=uwantmfgon&postId=1726357132&mc_cid=b23e8d420d&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
