Female wrestlers to get own tournament in W.Va.

TDR Note; More wrestling opportunities for wrestlers.

A post circulated on the Internet the last few days, announcing that the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission and the wrestling coaches association have approved a girls “state” wrestling tournament. The news was seen on WVMat.com.
The event, which will be held at Parkersburg South High School on Feb. 8, won’t be an official state tournament, but it will instead be held on a trial basis to gauge interest and participation of female wrestlers. In a sense, it will be similar to the Girls Championship held during golf season. “There are a lot of really good girls that wrestle,” Spring Mills coach Anthony Regalbuto said. Regalbuto, a father of two girls who has been active as a coach both at the youth and high school levels, has seen how almost strictly wrestling boys affects girls who are giving the sport a try. “When the kids start to hit puberty, it’s hard for a girl to compete with the boys,” he said, noting coaches can really see the difference when athletes hit ages between 10-12 years old. “To be a good wrestler until you’re 12 and boys have hit puberty and knock you down, it kind of knocks them out of the sport at times. Now you’re going up against girls. It’s huge for the sport. We’ve seen some girl wrestlers dominate at an early age.” Rest of the story at https://www.journal-news.net/journal-news/female-wrestlers-to-get-own-tournament-in-w-va/article_0fbba96e-0607-5a97-8be8-5304dc5c7270.html?mc_cid=60e5e7ba5b&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
