Top 100 College teams in dual meet wins in history
As the current 2019-2020 college wrestling season rolls into November and the tournament and dual meet results roll in let us review a list of the colleges and universities who have had long term activity and success in dual matches. While it is no surprise that Oklahoma State is the top school in wins with 1,120 in their 100 seasons of competition some of the other top schools may not be as well known. Unless otherwise noted the following schools are in Division I (D-I). Admittedly our totals and numbers may be incomplete and input will be gladly received.
There are four other schools with more than 1,000 wins. Iowa State and then Oregon State are next in line with 1,075 and 1,034 respectively. The 4th place team overall, and the top Division III (D-III) program, with 1,029 wins is Springfield College. University of Iowa passed the 1,000 win mark this season to become the 5th team.
As can be seen in the list below the next five schools, Minnesota, Penn State, Lehigh, Naval Academy and Oklahoma compete in Division I. Wilkes University is in 11th place and the 2nd D-III school with 883 wins. Michigan University is a distant 12th with 826 wins. Close behind are Cornell University and Wartburg College that moved up to tie Cornell with 821 wins for 13th place. Appalachian State and Kent State complete the list of 16 teams with more than 800 wins. Close behind are two schools who will earn their 800th win this season in Olivet College (D-III) and Ohio State. Lycoming College, (D-III) with 782 wins, moved past Northern Iowa into 19th place last season.
Closely packed are Indiana, Wisconsin and Lock Haven who are just 2 wins apart, The College of New Jersey (D-III) is only six behind Lock Haven. Further back are Ursinus College (D-III) and University of Illinois with 726 and 722 respectively. North Carolina State moved up to 27th place with 718. They were tied with Nebraska University, now with 714, before last season. Three more teams scored their 700th win last year. They are Princeton, North Idaho which is the top junior college in dual meet wins and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point for 31st spot.
Over 20 more teams have over 600 wins. They are led by Augsburg College and North Carolina University who will probably pass 700 wins this season. The top two Division II (D-II) teams are Minnesota- Mankato State and East Stroudsburg State with 624 and 621 wins respectively and place 46th and 47th overall. Hofstra, Pitt.-Johnstown (D-II) and Central Michigan scored their 600th win last season. Close behind them and looking to pass 600 wins this year are Ohio University, Missouri University, W.P.I.,(D-III) Drexel, Purdue, and Wyoming.
The top NAIA school is Southern Oregon State with 559 wins to place 73rd out of the top 100. The 100th school with 492 wins is also the top school in the California Junior College league which competes in a fall schedule apart from other leagues is Sacramento City College. There may be other California schools above that number and if so we welcome your input. Some of the schools included have incomplete records and we still are seeking information from the early years at Virginia Military Institute, Case Western, Heidelburg College, Northwestern University and Wisconsin-Whitewater. The top inactive teams, who unwisely dropped their program, are Nebraska-Omaha and Oregon University with 584 and 497 wins to rank 62nd and 98th respectively.
Hope that interest in a more complete record will prompt input and information from wrestling fans and coaches and officials. The list of the 100 is posted on a page so named on this site.

Short Time Shots: Illinois beat No. 13 Missouri (11-14-19)
Someone, anyone, please tell me why Party in the U.S.A. is stuck in my head. I don’t own that song, but I believe the reason for this is the fact I live in a house with three females and one of them might actually own one of the NOW music CDs. I actually own NOW, when there wasn’t a volume. NOW, Volume 1, which is not its real name, had some rock on it. It also had some sappy late 90s R&B that I fell out of favor with once I discovered how badass Phil Anselmo and Pantera was. Walk on home, boy. This is Short Time Shots, your mostly daily look at the scores and news from the world of wrestling. I’m Jason Bryant. So far, this will be 14 straight episodes. There likely won’t be one on Friday night, since I’ll be covering the Gopher dual and putting out an episode of The Guillotine Grapevine. Maybe I’ll record it on Saturday morning for you guys as you make the last mow of the season, or in some cases, the first snow shovel of the year worth it.
Dual Meets:
Unranked Illinois, fresh off getting beat by Army West Point last weekend, rebounded with a 19-14 win over border rival and 13th ranked Missouri at Francis Howell High School in St. Louis on Thursday night. Missouri did have the services of All-American Grant Leeth at 141, but were without Dylan Wisman at 184. Illinois had key wins at 125 as Justin Cardani beat Dack Punke and then three in a row from 165-184 to take the lead heading into the dual’s final two weights. Freshman heavyweight Luke Luffman prevailed 9-7 over Rodrigo Diaz to give Illinois the upset.
Division II Colorado School of Mines shut down Northeastern Junior College 34-9. Also out in Colorado, Western Colorado beat Chadron State 28-13 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Short Time Shots: Rider’s John Hangey (11-15-19)
Sometimes you have to pivot. I had every intention of putting together another episode of The Guillotine Grapevine here on the Mat Talk Podcast Network, but sometimes things don’t go as planned, as you’re about to find out. This is Short Time Shots, a mostly daily look at the scores and more from the world of wrestling, I’m Jason Bryant.
Dual Meets:
The biggest upset of the night and one of the bigger upsets in the past several years saw unranked Rider come into Williams Arena in Minneapolis and knock off No. 6 Minnesota 21-17. The key wins came from Jonathan Tropea at 125 pounds and Dean Sherry at 174 pounds. Sherry pinned All-American Devin Skatzka in one of the most exciting three minutes of wrestling. Instead of talking you through it, I talked with Rider coach John Hangey about the match and its impact on the Rider program. Rider’s Ryan Cloud won an absolutely not thrilling bout 1-0 at 285 over Bobby Steveson to lock up the win for the Broncs. (Hangey Interview)
In other Top 25 action, No. 3 Ohio State won six out of 10 at No. 15 Pittsburgh, but it was bonus points that blew the match open for coach Tom Ryan’s Buckeyes. Ohio State prevailed 23-12. Kollin Moore opened the dual with a major at 197, Chase Singletary scored a mild upset over Demetrius Thomas at heavyweight, Luke Pletcher, no, that’s not a typo, got a major at 141 pounds over Cole Matthews, while Sammy Sasso picked up a fall at 149 pounds. The Buckeyes return home to face No. 11 Virginia Tech on Sunday. Rest of the story at http://www.mattalkonline.com/podcast/shots/short-time-shots-11-15-19-featuring-rider-coach-john-hangey/?mc_cid=f4a6a198f0&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
Short Time Shots: Garage Days (11-19-19)
I’m Jason Bryant, and this is Short Time Shots, a mostly daily look at the scores and more from around the world of wrestling. My wife’s asleep, so I’m doing something different and recording this using the Backpack app on my phone. I’m standing in my 44-degree garage. And of course, this is now the second time I’m recording it, since stupid me tested it, changed a setting, but didn’t re-test it. So now I’m back in the garage. This isn’t my initial script, so screw it.
Dual Meets:
As noted in the Monday episode, there was a dose of Division III wrestling in Ohio where No. 4 Mount Union beat Muskingum 54-0, highlighted by seven falls from the Purple Raiders, including a 10-second fall from returning All-American and top-ranked Antwon Pugh. No. 1 Jordin James, last year’s national champion at 133, picked up one of the other six falls. John Carroll beat Heidelberg 25-15, No. 9 Baldwin Wallace beat Ohio Northern 28-6 and
No. 15 Otterbein beat Wilmington 53-0. Of note with Wilmington, this is the second year the team has been active since reinstatement, but with no home duals last year with an abbreviated schedule, Tuesday was the first home dual in seven years for the Fighting Quakers – yes, I say again, Fighting Quakers. All-American heavyweight and top-ranked Drew Kasper had a fall in 94 seconds there for Otterbein.
In the NAIA, Baker beat Graceland 32-12. Rest of this story and audio at http://www.mattalkonline.com/podcast/shots/short-time-shots-garage-days-11-19-19/?mc_cid=4c42a27e7e&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
