UNC-Pembroke’s Daggett Named MEC Wrestler Of The Week
BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – A quartet of victories, including a pair of wins over nationally-ranked opponents, as well as a trip to the podium, has earned all-American Nick Daggett a weekly honor from the Mountain East Conference (MEC), the league office announced Tuesday.
Daggett was named MEC Wrestler of the Week after registering four wins at the prestigious Midwest Classic over the weekend, including a trio of wins on Sunday that ultimately led to a fourth-place showing. Daggett, who dropped a tight decision in Saturday’s quarterfinal round, rebounded with a pin of Davenport’s Daniel Poupore in his opening match on Sunday, and then took down ninth-ranked Jacob Dunlop (Gannon) and sixth-ranked Tyler Kreith (Maryville) to advance through to the third-place bout. His run would end there, unfortunately, with a 4-2 decision to top-ranked Carlos Jacquez of Lindenwood.
A three-year starter for the Black & Gold, Daggett has compiled 74 wins already in his collegiate career, including a 13-3 mark this season. He has qualified for each of the last two NCAA Division II National Championships, including an all-American run as a freshman in 2017-18.
