3rd Season Column 16: Mid December Musings; SoCon News; Cue the local angle; and music
“Ah distinctly I remember, It was in the bleak December..” wrote one Edgar Allen Poe in The Raven, one of the worlds great poems. And while the weather across the wrestling world takes its typical chilly turn, a couple of teams are muy caliente come this particular mid month mark. Let’s take a look see, shall we?
Numerous words were written and spoken about the unsteady nature of the team from Mt. Pleasant of late. Several seasons worth of high profile defections and sub par dual meet and tournament results had outsiders thinking and saying Tom Borellis Chippewas had fallen back to the pack. That they were becoming something quite a bit different than the 16X conference champs they had been. That the regression was only partly due to Missouris admission to the MAC and the Tigers immediate ascension to the conference throne. Well, well, welcome, 2019 season, and welcome back, Chippewas! Borellis Boyz have steadied the canoe with a sterling showing at 3 straight tournaments. 11 Top 5 finishes out the gate at the Michigan State Open, 4 first place showings in Boone, NC, at the App State Open, and a team Bronze at the Black Knight Invitational. Then CMU hit the dual meet road to a 2-1 tune through last week. The only setback, a 10 point loss in Anne Arbor to Michigan where CMU won 4 bouts to 6 for the Wolverines. Iowa Wesleyan University Announced a $250,000 Gift for a Wrestling Training Facility

Mount Pleasant, Iowa – December 16, 2019 – While hosting wrestling legend Dan Gable on campus, Iowa Wesleyan University announced a $250,000 gift from Mark and Sandy Willis. Mark is a 1970 graduate of Iowa Wesleyan and a 2017 inductee into the IW Tiger Athletics Hall of Fame. This gift will be used toward a building remodel to create a state-of-the-art wrestling training center. The building, located at 205 E. Taft Street, was donated to Iowa Wesleyan in 2007 by the Randy and Karly Beavers Family. It will be named the ‘Willis Wrestling Facility’ and will house a training area, locker rooms, a weight room, and other wrestling specific amenities. It will also house offices and a film room for the wrestling program and other athletic staff. “The impact of this gift from Mark and Sandy is significant for our community, from our athletics program to our enrollment management efforts,” said Iowa Wesleyan President Chris Plunkett. “This facility will also have an immediate and positive impact on our recruiting efforts for future Tigers.” The Mark and Sandy Willis gift was given as a challenge to other alumni and wrestling fans to help grow a solid foundation for the program’s future. Renovation is expected to begin in late spring following the completion of a successful fundraising effort for the new wrestling program. The facility should be completed by the fall of 2020. “Thanks to the incredible support from Mark and Sandy Willis, men’s and women’s Tiger wrestling student-athletes will now enjoy the benefits of a new training facility,” said Derek Zander, director of athletics. “The facility will house all of the day-to-day operations of our teams, coaches, and staff. From above the Arctic Circle comes a wrestler who likes to throw some weight around
Spencer Woods is a relative newcomer to the sport he hopes will take him to next year’s Summer Olympics, and when you hear about his first real taste of Greco-Roman wrestling, you might be surprised it wasn’t also his last. It happened several years ago when Woods was a Kotzebue High freshman at a tournament in Las Vegas that offered competition in folkstyle, freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling. Folkstyle is the kind of wrestling Woods grew up with in Shungnak and Kotzebue, the kind contested in Alaska high schools. Greco-Roman is the kind of wrestling where competitors must remain on their feet and battle chest-to-chest, the kind of wrestling where a guy sometimes picks up his opponent and hurls him across the mat. It’s the kind of wrestling, Woods says, that people like to watch. Iowa to end 2019 calendar year as nation’s No. 1 team
Manheim, Pennsylvania – The 2019 calendar year will come to a close with Iowa holding firm on the No. 1 ranking in the NWCA Division I Coaches Poll released on Tuesday. With limited duals, there were only two minor changes from last week’s poll. Minnesota and Northern Iowa swapped spots, while Stanford entered the Top 25 tied at No. 25 with Rider. The Big Ten leads all conferences with nine of its 14 member schools ranked. The ACC has five of its six teams ranked in the Top 25, while the EIWA has four, followed by the Big 12 and Mid-American Conference, with three each. The Pac-12 has two teams ranked. Wyoming’s Krueger Earns Big 12 Wrestler of the Week Honors
LARAMIE, Wyo. (Dec. 17, 2019) – Wyoming 157-pound wrestler Dewey Krueger has been named the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week for his efforts Sunday at the Reno Tournament of Champions after he took home an individual title as well as the Most Outstanding Wrestler honor at the tournament. Krueger, who helped lead the Cowboys to a team title in Reno with 155.5 team points, was one of three individual champions for the Pokes. Krueger went 5-0 Sunday, including a pair of bonus-point victories in his first two matches of the day. US Coast Guard Academy’s Irwin Named NEWA Wrestler of the Week
NEW LONDON, Conn. – Coast Guard senior Patrick Irwin has been named the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Wrestler of the Week.
Irwin, the top ranked heavyweight in New England, who is ranked fourth nationally, beat Michael DiNardo from Johnson & Wales, who is third in the region and sixth in the nation, 2-0 during a dual meet on Wednesday, the only match of the week for the Bears. Coast Guard, ranked 14^th nationally, is back in action on January 8^th with a dual meet at WPI at 6:00. MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE ANNOUNCES WRESTLERS OF THE WEEK
MAC East Division: Wrestler of the Week
DJ Fehlman, Lock Haven—Senior, Warren, Pa. (Warren High School)
Lock Haven senior DJ Fehlman at 133 lbs., enjoyed a busy and perfect weekend for the Bald Eagles. Fehlman went a perfect 4-0 and helped Lock Haven got 4-0 as he recorded a win in each of the four dual victories. With the four wins, Fehlman pushed his career win total to 99. The returning national qualifier will look for win No. 100 this week in MAC Eastern Division action. Fehlman started his week with a huge win vs. Navy on Friday, Dec. 13. After the match started at 141, it was all up to Fehlman in the night’s final bout to seal the team-victory in front of 2,000-plus at Red Lion High School in the 2019 Rumble in the Jungle.
As the Bald Eagles clung to a one-point 16-15 lead heading into the final bout, Fehlman put it away in style, dominating Navy’s Casey Cobb, 9-3. Fehlman and Cobb, who was listed in some national rankings this week, were tied 0-0 after one, but Fehlman led 7-2 after an exciting second period, thanks to a six-point move after a hard-fought takedown and four quick near-fall points. A late Fehlman third-period takedown sealed the win. On Saturday, Dec. 14, Lock Haven picked up lopsided wins over Millersville, McDaniel and Messiah, and Fehlman was 3-0 on the day with a tech fall and two pins.
MAC West Division: Wrestlers of the Week
Evan Cheek, Cleveland State—Senior, Milan, Ohio (Edison High School)

Lindsey Wilson DOMINATES NO. 4 MARIAN 44-4
JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. – The No. 3-ranked Lindsey Wilson (8-0) wrestling team used nine match wins in their dual against No. 4 Marian (Ind.) as they rolled to a 44-4 victory. In total, Lindsey Wilson picked up four victories via the pin, two major decision victories and two decision victories as well as a forfeit win. Cagen Wallace (No. 14 at 125) picked up six points to open the match with a forfeiture victory. Brock Whorton then won on a 5-1 decision against Trey McCartney (No. 15 at 133). Marian won their only match of the night on a 16-3 major decision at 141-pounds. Brandon James (No. 4 at 141) picked up the win over Alex Caldwell. Latrell Davis (No. 2 at 149) returned the favor in the next match as he produced a 15-5 major decision victory over Jesus Mancera. Lindsey Wilson’s Derrick Smallwood, Bryce Hoffman and Trajan Hurd then recorded three straight pins. Old Dominion Wins First MAC Dual of the Season Against SIUE, 33-9
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The Old Dominion (1-1, 1-0 MAC) wrestling team won eight of 10 bouts in its dual against Mid-American Conference (MAC) foe SIUE (1-3, 0-1 MAC) to earn a commanding 33-9 victory on Wednesday night. “We had a good performance tonight,” head coach Steve Martin said after the match. “We have a team that can make some special memories. We have five teams in our conference that have had top-25 performances, so we not only look forward to our non-conference schedule, but the MAC schedule as well.”
One of the more commanding victories came in the 125-pound match, where No. 10 Killian Cardinale earned a whopping 10 takedowns in his bout over Gage Datlovsky.
