Brothers Cayden and Graham Rooks Look to Fuel Program Turnaround for IU Wrestling
By Jared Rigdon
When it came to picking a place to wrestle in college, Graham Rooks never faced a tough decision. Growing up in Columbus, Indiana, just an hour east of IU, Graham saw first hand how talented the state of Indiana was in wrestling. However, IU was a struggling program in the powerhouse Big Ten conference. When former IU wrestler Angel Escobedo took over the reigns of the program, Graham knew IU was starting to build something special. Clemson football player went 199-1 as a wrestler; the guy who beat him still inspires him
CLEMSON — Gage Cervenka knew that failure to prepare was preparing to fail. He honed his precocious approach while winning middle school wrestling matches as a seventh grader in Greenwood, making a name for himself from Columbia to Greenville as an irresistible 6-2, 200-pound force.
So what if the opponent that day early in Cervenka’s freshman year at Emerald High School would rely on a favorite heavyweight wrestling move? Sure, Tre Long loved the “fat man roll” and was good at it.
Cervenka was ready.
“I’m thinking the whole time, ‘I got this,’” said Cervenka, a senior right guard on Clemson’s undefeated defending national championship football team. But the wily Long, a junior from Eastside High School in Taylors, splendidly executed that fat man roll of his. He pinned Cervenka to win the match. “Of course, I remember it,” said Cervenka, now 6-3 and 325 pounds. “I remember the whole thing.” Rest of the story at https://www.postandcourier.com/columnists/clemson-football-player-went—as-a-wrestler-the/article_5e715cc2-1ddf-11ea-8a60-cffd6481adca.html?mc_cid=9cba8da7f9&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
Peter Del Gallo wrapping up strong run at U.Southern Maine
Gardiner native undefeated heading into winter break.
To the surprise of almost no one, Gardiner native Peter Del Gallo has had a successful wrestling career at the University of Southern Maine.
But not only has Del Gallo, a senior, continued to be one of the best college wrestlers in New England, he’s managed to be among the most elite Division III wrestlers in the nation. And as he wraps up his career, he may have saved his best efforts for last.
Heading into the holiday break, Del Gallo — who wrestles at 125 pounds — is undefeated for the regular season with a 21-0 record. He also recently notched his 100th career victory. This is on the heels of a junior season where Del Gallo was named a Division III All-American, with a third-place finish at the Division III National Championships.

University of Southern Maine’s Peter Del Gallo, of Gardiner, recently scored the 100th win of his career.
”Last year was another breakout year for him,” USM head coach Mike Morin said. “Going 5-1 at the NCAA tournament, becoming an NCAA All-American, placing third in the country (in his weight class). So far this year, we’ve seen another jump. He’s not only winning, but dominating most of the competition that he’s wrestling. That’s one of the things that we’ve talked about, just continue to improve, continue to get better. It just seems like he’s been doing that year in and year out.” Despite last season’s success, Del Gallo felt there was still improvements to be made in his game. Lehigh downs Duke, Missouri to cap 3-0 showing at South Beach Duals
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – No. 14 Lehigh completed a 3-0 trip to the South Beach Duals with two victories Monday at the Broward County Convention Center. The Mountain Hawks began the day with a dominant 47-4 win over Duke, then broke a 9-9 tie by claiming the final four bouts in a 22-9 defeat of No. 19 Missouri. Six Mountain Hawks posted 2-0 records on the day, with five of the six going 3-0 over the two day event as Lehigh enters the second half of the dual season with a 4-3 mark.
“It’s good to see the hard work paying off,” Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro said. “We’ve done a lot of little things right. Wrestling the full seven minutes. Attacking a lot more. It makes a big difference.”
In the day’s first match against Duke, Lehigh benefitted from a pair of forfeits, but was dominant in the bouts that were contested. Six of Lehigh’s seven non-forfeit wins produced bonus points, including four technical falls and then back-to-back pins by juniors Jake Jakobsen (197) and Jordan Wood (285) to close out the dual. Big Red Wrestling Splits Final Day in South Beach
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Cornell wrestling split a pair of duals in its final day of competition at the South Beach Duals hosted at the Broward County Convention Center. The Big Red defeated #19 Missouri in its first dual of the day, 19-18, before falling to #15 Minnesota later in the afternoon, 31-12.
With the split, Cornell’s season dual record moves to 4-3 with Ivy League duals on the horizon. The Big Red finish the South Beach Duals with a 4-1 record. In its first dual of the day, Cornell mounted a massive comeback against Missouri. Trailing 18-3 heading into the final four weights, the Big Red outscored the Tigers, 16-0, to secure a 19-18 victory. Missouri mounted its 18-3 lead by winning five of the first six weights, with Cornell’s lone win coming via #6 Chas Tucker at 133 pounds. Tucker remained unbeaten on the season with a 6-3 victory over #24 Allan Hart.
Brandon Womack got the comeback started with a 10-8 decision over Jeremiah Kent. Jonathan Loew also picked up a decision, defeating #22 Dylan Wisman, 16-10. Loew nearly scored a tech fall for the Big Red, leading Wisman 15-4 prior to a late surge by the Tiger grappler. At 197 pounds, Ben Darmstadt continued to enjoy his return to the weight, pinning #23 Wyatt Koelling in 1:11. Koelling scored a takedown on Darmstadt, but it was the Big Red sophomore that used some funk to find the reversal and the fall. The Wondrous Week to be; USA Seniors show up, show out in TX; SoCon News; and a Big Tease
3rd Season Column 17 by Ted Carreras
The time frame of December 27th through Jan. 2nd has wrestlers, coaches, and fans gloriously enjoying 3 huge competitions in 3 VERY different U.S. geographic regions for, one could argue, fairly different reasons. The South Beach Wrestling Experience, a 4 day event starting on the 27th, began just 2 years ago. Cornell Head Coach Rob Koll helped lead the charge to South Florida, and teams from youth levels to D1 from across the country will convene at the Ft. Lauderdale Convention Center. After two days of youngsters competition, the college level teams take to the mats in a 2 day, 2 duals per day format. 12 teams are currently listed, down from the 16 last year. Reasons for the reduction seem to be centered around a slew of upsets that occurred last time, and the benefits from the win/loss ratio. Nonetheless, Cornell, Duke, Lehigh, Minnesota, Missouri, Michigan State, NC State, North Dakota State, Old Dominion, Oklahoma, South Dakota State and Wyoming were registered as of this writing. However, a quick perusal of various teams websites showed NC State and NDSU headed to the Southern Scuffle instead while Oklahoma is apparently swapping the South Beach Experience for the Midlands. College wrestling does promote flexibility and the ability to change direction at any moment. Not to mention levels. Speaking of the Ken Kraft Midlands, the 57th edition of College wrestlings longest currently running tournament is a Sunday-Monday affair this year. The location changed 2 years back from the campus of the host school, Northwestern, to the Sears Center in Hoffman Estates, Ilinois. More room and more accessibility to hotels and restaurants were probably major factors. And, maybe, just like the College World Series “outgrew” friendly, old, familiar Rosenblatt Stadium, the Midlands just needed something different. What’s NOT different is the potential for this event to morph into the Iowa Open again. Don’t hate on the Hawkeyes, just beat them, if you can. Probably not going to happen this year, though, as Iowa will probably have 6 top seeds and most all of their wrestlers expected to make the semis. Wisconsin, Northwestern, Purdue, Princeton, Northern Iowa, North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Campbell all have Top 10 hopes and individual title aspirations to varying degrees. From here, though, sure looks like the Hawkeyes world. In keeping with this columns focus on events, teams, and individuals not always in the spotlight, heres a few fine fellows from less heralded hotspots…..
Khizan Clarke, 149, American University. 4 tournament titles so far in a 17-0 season.
Trevor Allard, 184, Bloomsburg. On pace for a 30 plus win season and 100 plus win career, 12-1 so far in 2019.
Nino Bastianelli, 197, Brown. 3 year varsity starter who’s won tournaments every season. Bastianelli and the Bears have seen limited action this year and The Midlands is easily their biggest test before Nationals. Besides those Cognitive Psychology, Applied Mathematics, and BioEngineering Finals.

Top 100 College teams in dual meet win percent in history – Part 2 (NAIA)
Top 100 College teams (in dual meet win percentages over history) Part 2
Earlier we listed the top college teams in total dual meet wins across the past 120 years. This list ranks the teams by the highest winning percentages of dual meets across the program’s history. Now, verifying accurate team winning percentages are more challenging as each win or loss recorded, or not recorded, makes a difference. Thus with that caveat, the following is the top 30 schools in NAIA collegiate teams ranked by wining percentage. Part 1 had Women’s and National Junior College teams.
