In South Dakota
Hutmacher, March look to pin down Lewis’ record
RAPID CITY — Randy Lewis moved back to Rapid City six months ago and he’s being greeted by two of South Dakota’s top wrestlers on the verge of breaking one of his most prestigious records, but that’s just fine with him.
The 1984 Olympic gold medalist and two-time NCAA champion went 89-0 in his final three seasons at Rapid City Stevens from 1975 to 1977, and set a then-national record with 45 consecutive pins in 1975. Lewis’ national record has since been broken, but it has lasted as a state record for 44 years.
Until now. Chamberlain heavyweight Nash Hutmacher and Canton 138-pounder Kellyn March are both on the cusp of taking down Lewis’ record. Hutmacher has 43 straight pins heading into the Madison Invitational on Saturday, while March has 44 consecutive pins going into Saturday’s Elk Point-Jefferson invite. “I’m very happy for both of them,” Lewis said. “I’m sure they’re both going to break my record this weekend. I don’t know who will have the most matches. Records are made to be broken.” After finishing his wrestling career in 1992 that include four All-American honors at the University of Iowa for legendary coach Dan Gable, two appearances in the Olympics and a 1990 Pan-American title at 136.5 pounds, Lewis had stints living in Iowa, Arizona and Rapid City. He has found success as a business owner and currently works for an LED lighting company.
Throughout his time away, however, Lewis, 60, has kept an eye on South Dakota wrestling. While he has never seen March compete, Lewis had seen clips of Hutmacher and met him for the first time last weekend at the Rapid City Invitational. Area wrestling roundup: Hutmacher passes Lewis’ pin record
MADISON — Chamberlain’s Nash Hutmacher recorded his 46th straight pin and claimed the Madison Invitational title on Saturday. The heavyweight recorded three pins, including one over Omaha Central’s Jacob Frezell-McClinton in the title match. Hutmacher and Canton wrestler Kellyn March both surpassed Rapid City’s Randy Lewis’ state record most consecutive pins (45) on the same day. An 138-pounder, March was competing at the Elk Point-Jefferson Invitational and now has the state record with 48 consecutive pins.
Chamberlain finished fourth in the team standings with 145 points. Rapid City Stevens (201.5) won the team title. … Rest of the story at https://www.mitchellrepublic.com/sports/wrestling/4835422-Area-wrestling-roundup-Hutmacher-passes-Lewis%E2%80%99-pin-record?mc_cid=9cba8da7f9&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

High School Insider: Wyoming Seminary’s Cannon fires his shot, taking Beast title as a No. 23 seed
What a wild and crazy weekend it was at Beast of the East on the campus of the University of Delaware. Maybe wildest and craziest part that came at 106 pounds, where Cadet World champion Marc-Anthony McGowan may have entered as the biggest favorite of any wrestler in the tournament. But that’s why they wrestle the matches. Not only was McGowan upset, the wrestler who beat him the semifinals was then knocked off in his finals match. That’s right, the star of the show and champion at 106 was Wyoming Seminary’s Brandon Cannon.  Cannon competed as part of a partial squad sent by Sem while most of the big guns competed at the MyHouse XCalibur tournament. He began the weekend as the No. 23 seed and proceeded to rip his way through to first, dispatching ranked wrestlers in the quarters and semis in Mac Church of Waynesburg Central and Gabe Giampietro of Smyrna. Then, in the finals, Cannon picked up a 7-2 sudden-victory win over Tyler Vasquez of Delbarton, who himself topped McGowan 1-0 in the semifinals. A former middle school Super 32 champ from Colorado, Cannon’s win should not be a complete and utter shock, but with Danny Sheen getting the call for Sem at 106 to start the season and wrestling solidly, it appears coach Scott Green has a decision to make. Otherwise at the Beast, then-No. 3 Ryan Crookham took out No. 1 Robbie Howard at 126 on the way to a title. Sixteenth-seeded Cody Chittum, one of the best freshmen in the nation, took home the top spot at 138. Dalton Harkins backed up his Walsh Ironman win at 152 with another win at Beast of the East, solidifying his status as a stud. Andrew Cerniglia beat Cadet World Team member Clay Ulrey 11-6 in an all-PA battle in the finals at 160. By Greg Wickliffe |gwickliffe@mlive.comCHELSEA – Nick Matusko didn’t even expect to be where he was at the end of last year’s wrestling season. Then a junior, the Chelsea grappler had a goal of placing in the state tournament and exceeded that goal by earning a spot in the state title match with an undefeated record. Matusko was one win away for an undefeated season after storming through the 140-pound bracket setting up a showdown with Lowell’s Avry Mutschler. Wrestling notes: ‘Not that big,’ Naperville Central senior Angelo Eklou uses his speed to his advantage at 220 pounds
Angelo Eklou is not your prototypical 220-pound wrestler. “I am not that big,” the 5-foot-9 Eklou said. But the Naperville Central senior is on a mission in his final season to make his first appearance at the Class 3A state meet in Champaign in February. Eklou has won 12 of his first 13 matches this season, including nine victories by fall. Built like a fire hydrant, Eklou uses his equally muscular lower body and upper torso to maximum effect on the mat.
