Kolat: “Nothing unexpected” in Arizona
BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Saying that Campbell had an exciting weekend in Arizona is an understatement.
The Camels started off the day at Chase Field with a 22-14 victory over No. 11 Iowa State. A close dual with No. 4 Arizona State came down to the last bout, ultimately ending with a win for heavyweight Jere Heino but a loss for the team, 21-18. Ending the day on a positive note, the team defeated Harvard 27-9 with seven individual match wins.
It was also a superb day for individual Camels. After the coaches pulled Jason Kraisser’s redshirt, the freshman earned two falls and a decision. Where Kraisser performed, so did veterans Noah GonserAndrew Morgan and Quentin Perez who all earned wins against top-25 ranked opponents.
We caught up with Coach Kolat to hear his thoughts on the Duals on the Diamond. Here’s what he had to say:
“Our guys wrestled like they have been most of the season. I did not find anything or see anything unexpected. We have many ranked guys in the lineup. They train solid, they compete solid, and they hold everyone accountable. Our staff fully understands that to our alumni, fans, and administrators this is an exciting win for our program and provides even more validation that they have been making the right moves with the Campbell Wrestling program. I’m extremely happy for them and grateful for the support.
“My staff and athletes have worked to put ourselves in this position … Rest of the story at https://gocamels.com/news/2020/1/13/wrestling-kolat-nothing-unexpected-in-arizona.aspx?mc_cid=4454b8e7c1&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

St. Cloud State’s James Pleski named NSIC Wrestler of the Week
St. Cloud State University senior James Pleski, a resident of Stacy, Minn. and graduate of Forest Lake High School, has been named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Wrestler of the Week for the week of Jan. 6-12. Pleski charted a perfect 4-0 record as SCSU won its fourth consecutive NWCA DII National Duals title on Jan. 10-11 in Louisville, Kentucky.  He opened the tournament with a 4-3 win over Maryville’s Tyler Stegall at 149 pounds and then carded a 3-2 victory over No. 5 ranked Chris Donathan of Tiffin in the second match on Jan. 10.
On Jan. 11, Pleski  added a key 3-1 overtime win over Central Oklahoma’s Zach Moore at 149 and then finished his perfect tourney run with a critical 6-4 overtime win over #12 Juwan Edmond of McKendree in the championship dual on Jan. 11.   The points posted by Pleski were needed as the Huskies narrowly defeated #5 McKendree 17-16 in the title bout. On the season, Pleski owns an 11-3 overall record and is currently ranked #2 in the nation amongst NCAA DII wrestlers at 149-pounds. SCSU is currently ranked #1 in the nation among NCAA DII wrestling teams with a 10-0, 2-0 NSIC record.  SCSU also set a new NCAA DII record for most consecutive dual match wins over the weekend. The old record of 54 wins was held by the Huskies from Jan. 30, 2011 to Jan. 12, 2014.  The Huskies now have 58 consecutive dual match wins dating back to a loss on Jan. 14, 2017. The Huskies also captured their fourth … Rest of the story at https://scsuhuskies.com/news/2020/1/13/wrestling-st-cloud-states-james-pleski-named-nsic-wrestler-of-the-week.aspx?mc_cid=4454b8e7c1&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Short Time Shots: Duals, Duals, Duals (01-13-20)
It’s late on the East Coast, semi late here in Minnesota and the College Football Playoff game is still going on as I sit down and blast out this episode. This is Short Time Shots, a mostly daily look at the scores and more from in and around the sport of wrestling, I’m Jason Bryant, and since there were no scores tonight, the show is about the “more,” today. Back home from Virginia and the 40th annual Virginia Duals. I’ve been to 24 and that tournament holds a special place in my heart. One of the more heart-wrenching moments came in the ODU-Virginia dual where Killian Cardinale, the starter for ODU, which as you know, is my alma mater, wrestled Patrick McCormick, a four-time state champion from my hometown of Poquoson and the son of one of my good friends, NCAA wrestling official Mike McCormick. I once had a similar instance where Bryan LaShomb of ODU wrestled Anthony Burke of UVA in a dual meet. That time, I was announcing. Burke was in my sister’s graduating class back in 2004, and I’d known him since he was in middle school. With Patch, who I gave a little local shout out … Rest of the story and podcast at http://www.mattalkonline.com/podcast/shots/short-time-shots-duals-duals-duals-01-13-20/?preview=true&_thumbnail_id=60626&mc_cid=4454b8e7c1&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

KJFF Catches Up with Seckman Alum and N.C. State Wrestler Kai Orine
(Raleigh, NC) One of the most decorated wrestlers in Seckman High School history, Kai Orine, is in his first year at North Carolina State University and wrestling as a redshirt freshman. Kai was a 3-time state champion as a member of the Seckman Jaguars and is off to a 12-5 start as a member of the Wolfpack. Per NCAA rules for redshirt freshmen, Kai is only allowed to wrestle in open tournaments and not duals. He is also responsible for arranging his own travel, lodging, entry fees and meals for these tournaments. With that in mind, Kai showed up and won the 133-pound weight division of the Pembroke Classic last November, picking up 4 wins in the process. Prior to that, Kai finished 4th at the Battle at The Citadel. Recently, he competed in a tough Southern Scuffle tournament, finishing 4th. … Rest of the story at https://www.mymoinfo.com/kjff-catches-up-with-seckman-alum-and-n-c-state-wrestler-kai-orine/?mc_cid=edf20d65ae&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Weekend Rundown: Iowa posts two shutouts, ASU sweeps Duals on the Diamond, Campbell takes down ISU
Top-ranked Iowa added another piece to its lineup Friday night and then proceeded to run the table during its weekend swing through Indiana posting a pair of 41-0 wins in duals at Indiana and Purdue. The Hawkeyes are 54-6 in dual matches this season and they’ve notched three shutouts in six outings.  Iowa won the first four duals of the season with Nelson Brands and three-time NCAA qualifier Cash Wilcke splitting the 184-pound duties, but the Hawkeyes pulled the redshirt off true freshman Abe Assad on Friday and the Midlands runner-up collected a pair of victories on the weekend.  Iowa wasn’t in top form against the Hoosiers, but the Hawkeyes were sharp against a Purdue squad that’s been ranked inside the top 10 for much of the past month. Spencer Lee registered a first-period technical fall against fifth-ranked Devin Schroder at 125, Alex Marinelli (165) and Tony Cassioppi finished the weekend with a pair of falls each, No, 2 Michael Kemerer pulled away late to beat No. 4 Dylan Lydy 8-4 at 174 and fifth-ranked Jacob Warner downed No. 3 Christian Brunner 8-2 at 197.
— Second-ranked Penn State has been dealing with moving lineup parts since the season’s onset and this weekend was another illustration. In their first outing since returning national champion Anthony Cassar was declared out for the remainder of the season, the Nittany Lions wrestled Friday night without two-time NCAA champ Vincenzo Joseph, … https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1579059897794&twSessionId=qayntjiciw&postId=112974135&mc_cid=edf20d65ae&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Eleven ranked teams lose to create shake-ups in NWCA Division I Coaches Poll
Manheim, Pennsylvania – Last week’s college wrestling schedule was anything but predictable. With 30 of the 71 duals featuring ranked teams, Division I college started settling into their dual meet schedules and it seemed no ranking, except maybe Iowa’s, was safe. Eleven different ranked teams got beat last week, creating another modest shake-up in the NWCA Division I Wrestling Coaches Poll on Tuesday.
Iowa (6-0) remained a unanimous No. 1 after shutting out Indiana and then-No. 18 Purdue by identical 41-0 scores. Penn State (5-1) sat numerous starters over the weekend, but still navigated past a pair of Big Ten opponents. The Nittany Lions topped Illinois 22-16 before beating then-No. 13 Northwestern 30-9. Penn State’s move up to No. 2 was aided by No. 8 Wisconsin’s 25-18 home win over Nebraska on Sunday. Nebraska slid seven spots, while Wisconsin stayed put at No. 8, mostly in part to the Badgers’ 20-14 loss at then-No. 15 Minnesota on Friday. The Gophers jumped up to No. 11 this week. … Rest of the story at http://www.nwcaonline.com/eleven-ranked-teams-lose-to-create-shake-ups-in-nwca-division-i-coaches-poll/?mc_cid=edf20d65ae&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Short Time Shots: Presbyterian picks up the W (1-15-20)
Got a two-star review on this here show the other day. The review, which was on the master Mat Talk feed and not this or the master Short Time feed, said they missed the longer shows and these short ones weren’t cutting it. First off, thank you for the feedback. Everyone has different tastes and this format has mostly been agreeable to listeners. This show, Short Time, actually started in this format in November of 2013. It went to interviews when the scores stopped, and the show grew from there. The interview shows aren’t done, but I’ve been busy handling the clients I have with the network. I’m also not going to chase the same interviews as everyone else. Doing things differently is what I’ve always done, but that being said, yes, I miss “my show” with “my interviews.” I’ll be picking them back up here soon, but I’ve always got a lot of irons in the fire. When my time becomes strained, I put my own shows on the back burner. I don’t put Short Time ahead of any other show on the network. These shots keep me fresh, help promote every level of wrestling and keep episodes in the feed. I don’t just want to stop doing shows and then lose the listeners. There’s over 70 wrestling podcasts out there. This was the second one. I know people have come and gone from the various Mat Talk shows. I like this format. I like the interview format, but this is also my business, I have to make sure my time is cost-effective. This is why I pitch the Patreon links at the end of each show. … Rest of the story and podcast at http://www.mattalkonline.com/podcast/shots/short-time-shots-presbyterian-picks-up-the-w-1-15-20/?mc_cid=edf20d65ae&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Big Strides for Duke’s Latest Rising Star

This story originally ran in 11.5 Issue of GoDuke, the Magazine — Dec. 2019
Fifteen months into his collegiate wrestling career, redshirt freshman Mason Eaglin is starting to come into his own, while also bringing comparisons to one of the all-time great Blue Devil wrestlers, Conner Hartmann. Eaglin and Hartmann share a hometown in Port Orchard, Wash., 13 miles west of West Seattle, and an alma mater in South Kitsap High School. Hartmann arrived at Duke in August of 2011 right on the heels of Eaglin’s 11th birthday and with current head coach Glen Lanham serving in the assistant coach role. Fast forward a few years and Hartmann was on his way to becoming Duke’s most decorated wrestler in program history as a four-time NCAA qualifier and three-time NCAA All-American, while Eaglin was starting to compile an impressive scholastic resumé at South Kitsap. Eaglin was a four-time 4A state placer and two-time state finalist, winning the top prize at 170 pounds his senior season and going 35-1 overall. While wrestling is not for the feint of heart at any level, the competition in the wrestling room at the Division I collegiate level ramps up a notch. Eaglin, possessing an exemplary work ethic, started the grind as soon as he stepped on campus as his expectations of life in the room being challenging both physically and emotionally were quickly confirmed in an early-season weekend practice. “We did a really hard live practice on a Saturday where it was a lot of matches and … https://goduke.com/news/2020/1/13/wrestling-big-strides-for-dukes-latest-rising-star.aspx?mc_cid=4454b8e7c1&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
