#4 WRESTLERS PIN SETON HILL TO MOVE COACH PECORA TO ONE WIN OF TYING ALL-TIME RECORD

The fourth-ranked Pitt-Johnstown won the first four bouts, including falls from Jacob Ealy (141 lbs.) and Chris Eddins (149 lbs.) to build a 19-0 lead on its way to a 34-9 PSAC victory at Seton Hill, Saturday night. The win moved Head Coach Pat Pecora to within one of tying former Oregon State Coach Dale Thomas’ 46-year-old all-time career wins record. The Mountain Cats improved to 18-3 on the year and 4-0 in the PSAC.
Pecora now has 615 career victories, one shy of tying the all-time wins record among coaches in all divisions. Thomas took over as the all-time wins leader in 1974 and finished his career with 616 victories.
The Mountain Cats took control early. At 125 lbs., third-ranked Brendan Howard got things going with a 13-2 major decision over Frank Bonura, and Matt Siszka took the lead with a late second period take down on his way to making it 7-0 with a 7-3 decision over Vincent Distefanis at 133 lbs.
Back-to-back falls from Ealy at 141 lbs. and No.1-ranked Eddins at 149 lbs. increased the lead to 19-0. Ealy pinned Tyler Kenney at 6:24, and Eddins, who earned his 97th career win, followed with a fall at 4:08 over Joel Cawoski.
Seton Hill got on the scoreboard at 157 lbs. when Austin Shaw pinned Jacob Burgette with just 17 seconds remaining to narrow to Griffins’ deficit to 19-6 at the midway point.
However, Pitt-Johnstown never let it get any closer. … Coach Pecora will have a chance to tie the all-time wins record in Pitt-Johnstown’s next outing at Shippensburg on Friday. The Mountain Cats will then celebrate Alumni Weekend with a home Match against No. 11 Mercyhurst on February 7 at 7 p.m. in the Sports Center.

Iowa Western C.C. riding impressive performance at national duals
(Council Bluffs) — The Iowa Western wrestling program had one of their most impressive performances of the season this past weekend. The Reivers entered last weekend’s NJCAA National Duals with the No. 7 seed. Despite that, they picked up three dual wins before falling in the first place match to Clackamas Community College. “We’ve had a chip on our shoulder all year,” Head Coach Josh Watts said. “We’ve been out to prove something all year. The guys have bought into that. Going into national duals, I felt we were one of the best teams in the country, and we just wanted to put a performance out there that reflected that.” The outstanding weekend has been par for the course for an Iowa Western program that is currently ranked 4th in the NJCAA rankings. … Rest of the story at http://www.kmaland.com/sports/iwcc-wrestling-riding-impressive-performance-at-national-duals/article_43df5384-387c-11ea-9768-235b63985f8b.html?mc_cid=8ef0a047a0&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
Leistikow: An exciting, important two months ahead for Tom Brands and Iowa wrestling
IOWA CITY, Ia. — Upon his arrival for each new day of work, Tom Brands hops out of his truck and walks past the statue of Dan Gable before entering the doors of Carver-Hawkeye Arena. To most, the Gable statue represents an era of unquestioned Iowa wrestling dominance — a time when NCAA championships seemed automatic to the black and gold. To Brands, walking past a bronzed legend who delivered 15 NCAA Championships in 21 years as Iowa’s coach, means the opposite. … Rest of the story at https://www.hawkcentral.com/story/sports/college/columnists/chad-leistikow/2020/01/16/leistikow-exciting-times-tom-brands-spencer-lee-iowa-wrestling/4482083002/?mc_cid=8ef0a047a0&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
Multi-Divisional Insider: A look back at the National Duals and how the crowns were claimed
Mike Moyer was talking candidly about how he liked to see the U.S. Marine Corps NWCA Multi-Division National Dual Meet championships grow. In an interview with Trackwrestling prior to last weekend’s event Moyer, the Executive Director of the NWCA, glowingly spoke of how much he loves the dual meet aspect of wrestling. “What I love about the dual meet is that the performance of every wrestler on the team contributes to the success of the team,” Moyer said. “It’s more often than not the hero in a close dual meet victory is not necessarily what your superstars do, it is what your other wrestlers do. That is what is so great about a dual meet is everybody contributing to the success of the team. “Every match it doesn’t matter if it is your No. 1-ranked guy or it’s your backup whatever … everybody is on the hook to contribute to the success of the team, which is what really builds the excitement.” Moyer’s words almost seem prophetic in relation to how the 2020 National Duals played out inside the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville. There were many similar stories that unfolded — Grand View won its record ninth straight NAIA championship in domination fashion, 40-0 over Life University extending its dual meet win streak to 85. St. Cloud State won its fourth consecutive Division II championship while running its win streak to 58. Wartburg won its 12th Division III title, beating rival Augsburg in the 12th duals title battle between the Knights and Auggies. The two women’s division’s saw McKendree taking the NCAA Division title and Menlo capturing the NAIA crown. …

No. 5 Buchanan cruises to title at Doc Buchanan Invitational
Tuesday evening, Buchanan (Calif.) had most things go wrong in a 26-25 dual meet loss to Montini Catholic (Ill.) at the Garlic City Rumble in Gilroy; the Bears went 0-4 in one-point matches and lost an additional two-point match in that upset dual meet defeat. However, over the course of Friday and Saturday, the current national No. 5 (former national No. 3) Buchanan bounced back in spectacular fashion. Competing in the absolutely loaded Doc Buchanan Invitational at Clovis High School, the Bears placed a tournament high nine wrestlers on the way to 185.5 points and a repeat tournament title. Leading the way for Buchanan was the weight class title earned by Raymond Lopez at 106 pounds, which was keyed by a 15-14 semifinal victory over No. 13 Beau Mantanona (Palm Desert, Calif.). Two additional wrestlers placed in the top three, No. 6 Carlos Negrete (120) lost 4-3 in the final to No. 15 (at 126) Tristan Lujan (Selma, Calif.); while No. 19 Rocco Contino (170) placed third after losing by first period pin in the semifinal to eventual champion No. 5 (at 182) Gavin Kane (Cambridge, Ga.). Placing fourth for the Bears were Logan Gioffre (145) and No. 10 Joseph Martin (182); No. 9 Jack Gioffre (113) finished fifth; No. 8 Maximo Renteria (126) placed in joint sixth, defaulting out of the tournament after losing in the semifinal … Rest of the story at https://intermatwrestle.com/articles/22812?mc_cid=8be8d92f8c&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Davies begins wrestling program
Patriots pin Kilties for first D-II win
By ERIC BENEVIDES, Valley Breeze Sports Editor
LINCOLN – Like all inaugural high school programs, the Davies Tech wrestling team has experienced its share of ‘firsts’ this winter, from the Patriots’ first practice to their first out-of-state tournament, their first Division II meet, and the first weight class they won in their season opener on Dec. 18 in their home gym against Smithfield High. Unfortunately for the Patriots, they suffered a 66-12 defeat to the Sentinels, but last Wednesday, Jan. 8, Davies returned home to pick up its program’s historic first victory. Sophomore Matt Kravitz’s pin of Mount Pleasant High junior D’Arel Santos 53 seconds into the second round of their 182-pound match was the highlight of the night for the Patriots, who came away with a 36-23 victory. To the Kilties’ defense, they only brought five wrestlers to the meet, and while three of them won their matches and another one picked up a forfeit victory, the Patriots were awarded 30 points on forfeits. But that meant very little to head coach Geoff Poirier and his band of wrestlers. A win is a win, and after a month and a half of workouts that featured an education in High School Wrestling 101, it sure felt great to come away with a ‘W’. “It’s a stepping stone,” Poirier said. “It’s something to build on. We just talked about how we’re turning the corner really well, we’re pacing the way … Rest of the story at https://www.valleybreeze.com/2020-01-15/cumberland-lincoln-area/davies-begins-wrestling-program?mc_cid=8ef0a047a0&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b#.XiE9iBdMEkg
Lakewood wrestling coach Bob Veitch reaches 800 wins
By John Raffel / Sentinel contributor
Longtime Lakewood wrestling coach Robert Veitch has indicated he might be planning on stepping down at the end of this season. But his Vikings first decided to give Veitch quite a going away gift. His 800th career victory. This milestone came earlier this month against Leslie. It’s 800 wins for Veitch in 40 years as coach. There have been an incredible number of highlights. “I don’t know if there’s been any one special thing,” Veitch said. “We’ve had good teams for 35 years. Every kid is different every team is different. I guess the one biggest thing was when we beat Mason when they were ranked No. 2 in the state and Eaton Rapids was ranked No. 1. We beat both of them by one point at the regional championship.” Lakewood has been to the state semifinals twice but never was able to get into the finals. The Vikings have won their fair share of league (19), district (180) and regional titles. He’s only has 234 losses compared to 800 wins. Veitch is a Lake Odessa native and wrestled at Lakewood. He was third in the state at heavyweight in 1976. He went to Grand Rapids Junior College and wrestled for two seasons, followed by two more at Western Michigan University. Veitch was finishing college and started his coaching career in 1980. He took a substitute teaching job in Grand Ledge and started coaching at Lakewood. He was a physical and health education teacher for 36 years. “Norm Young was the coach before me,” Veitch said. “I would come back in the summer and help out. I needed someone to work out with, too, as I was going to college.” It was this relationship that got Veitch going into what would be a 40-year career. … Rest of the story at https://www.sentinel-standard.com/sports/20200116/lakewood-wrestling-coach-bob-veitch-reaches-800-wins?mc_cid=8ef0a047a0&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Confidence, wins are expectation for Top Gun participants
By Chris Easterling
IndeOnline.com Sports Editor
Top Gun Tournament to give wrestlers at Perry, Tuslaw and elsewhere a chance to potentially gain wins, confidence. Brent McBurney is acutely aware of what goes into being a wrestler. The Perry head coach knows all too well the less-than-enjoyable aspects of the sport. That’s why McBurney also understands the other side, the opposite of the pain and sometimes humbling on-mat results. Let’s be honest, wrestling, it’s a very demanding, mentally, physically tough sport,” McBurney said. “You throw some weight cutting in there, it’s not ideal for an average teenage kid to like it. So, there’s a fine balance where we try to keep the attitude in there and create ways to have fun with it and keep preaching that it’s a process. You’ve got to be willing to pay your dues in the practice room and go through tough times that no one’s willing to go through, and eventually you’re going to get rewarded for it.” The ultimate rewards for that work doesn’t happen until the end of the season, during the tournament. However, there’s always opportunities for that hard work to reap a little bit of what it sows, even in the middle of the season. For teams such as Perry, Tuslaw and Northwest, as well as nearly 50 others, an opportunity for just that exists this weekend. Those teams will all gather at Alliance High School, beginning Friday morning, for the two-day Top Gun Tournament. … Rest of the story at https://www.cantonrep.com/news/20200116/confidence-wins-are-expectation-for-top-gun-participants?mc_cid=8ef0a047a0&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

West Orange HS girls wrestling program thriving
WEST ORANGE, NJ — The West Orange High School girls wrestling team is making history at the high school and in New Jersey as part of a new national and worldwide movement acknowledging girls wrestling as a sport in its own right. At least 15 states have approved girls wrestling as a sport beginning in 2019, including New Jersey, which was the 12th state to approve. The state is well-known for how seriously it takes the sport, featuring detailed sports coverage, camps, tournaments, clubs, and more. Previously, girls were allowed to wrestle on co-ed teams. They still can, but as schools begin to build a full-size girls team — enough members to compete in each weight class — it is expected that girls will choose to play other females, especially at the higher weight classes. “Once you get over 132 pounds, it gets hard to wrestle boys,” said senior Sandy Guerrero, who wrestles girls at 215 pounds. “It’s like wrestling men,” she laughed. Until there are enough full-size teams for competition, girls wrestling tournaments remain individual in nature, meaning that there are no official team placements/scores. Building girls wrestling teams across the state is a process, but with the success of its inaugural 2019 season, it is growing quickly. The WOHS team started with seven girls last year and is up to 20 this year. The program at WOHS has expanded mostly by recruitment and word-of-mouth. Several girls had played other sports, like track and soccer, but liked the idea of doing something new and different. “At first I just liked the idea that there were no tryouts,” said sophomore Esther Gratia, “but it turned out to be so much more disciplined and serious. Practices are different from middle school – they’re aggressive and you practice to win. It’s a different mindset and a different culture.” For junior Elicia Kimble, wrestling offered something physical and demanding. “I have seven brothers and three sisters,” she said, “and things are always physical around my house. I wanted to get stronger and hold my own.” From the beginning, West Orange wrestlers Guerrero and Daniela Tacuri were incredibly successful, winning several championships in their weight classes, with Tacuri placing second and Guererro placing fourth in the state at Atlantic City in February, 2019. Both girls are on track for another shot this year, along with sophomore Esther Gratia. All three qualified on Jan. 11 to move forward – Tacuri was a 6-5 winner at 114 and Guerrero pinned her way to the championship at 215 pounds. Esther Gratia (180) was a runner-up. Guerrero has wrestled for 10 years, first with the West Orange Rec program, then middle school, and at West Orange High School. She also participates … Rest of the story at https://essexnewsdaily.com/sports/sports-westorange/84960?mc_cid=edf20d65ae&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
Trine University to Sponsor Women’s Wrestling
ANGOLA, Ind. – Today, Friday, Jan. 17, as girls from across the state travel to the Indiana High School Girls Wrestling (IHSGW) 2020 Finals, Trine University has announced it will start a women’s wrestling program of its own. The program will begin competition in the 2020-21 season. “We are excited to announce another opportunity for women athletes to compete at the collegiate level at Trine University,” said Assistant Vice President for Athletics Matt Land. “Women’s wrestling is a growing sport and we are proud that women across the region will have a new opportunity to compete here at Trine.” Women’s wrestling is a sport on the rise across the country, with 20 states officially offering a scholastic state championship, according to the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA). The Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) is set to join those ranks next year, announcing the formation of its own championship for the 2020-21 season. At the college level, more than 70 institutions offer women’s wrestling; 24 within the NCAA. Six NCAA Division III institutions currently sponsor women’s wrestling in the region. Trine becomes the first NCAA institution to sponsor the sport in Indiana. The biggest news for the growth of women’s wrestling came this past June when the NCAA’s Committee on Women’s Athletics “recommended that all three divisions of the NCAA governance structure add women’s wrestling as an NCAA emerging sport, effective August 1, 2020.” … Rest of the story at http://www.nwcaonline.com/trine-university-to-sponsor-womens-wrestling/

TAR HEELS ADD BROWN TO WRESTLING ROSTER
CHAPEL HILL — Carolina Wrestling announced Thursday the addition of freshman Noland Brown to the 2019-20 wrestling roster. Brown spent the past football season as a member of the Tar Heel football team. He will continue to be a part of both programs in 2020. Brown attended Swain County High School, where he served as a captain for both the wrestling and football teams.
