No. 5 Buchanan cruises to title at Doc Buchanan Invitational
Tuesday evening, Buchanan (Calif.) had most things go wrong in a 26-25 dual meet loss to Montini Catholic (Ill.) at the Garlic City Rumble in Gilroy; the Bears went 0-4 in one-point matches and lost an additional two-point match in that upset dual meet defeat. However, over the course of Friday and Saturday, the current national No. 5 (former national No. 3) Buchanan bounced back in spectacular fashion. Competing in the absolutely loaded Doc Buchanan Invitational at Clovis High School, the Bears placed a tournament high nine wrestlers on the way to 185.5 points and a repeat tournament title. Leading the way for Buchanan was the weight class title earned by Raymond Lopez at 106 pounds, which was keyed by a 15-14 semifinal victory over No. 13 Beau Mantanona (Palm Desert, Calif.). Two additional wrestlers placed in the top three, No. 6 Carlos Negrete (120) lost 4-3 in the final to No. 15 (at 126) Tristan Lujan (Selma, Calif.); while No. 19 Rocco Contino (170) placed third after losing by first period pin in the semifinal to eventual champion No. 5 (at 182) Gavin Kane (Cambridge, Ga.). Placing fourth for the Bears were Logan Gioffre (145) and No. 10 Joseph Martin (182); No. 9 Jack Gioffre (113) finished fifth; No. 8 Maximo Renteria (126) placed in joint sixth, defaulting out of the tournament after losing in the semifinal … Rest of the story at https://intermatwrestle.com/articles/22812?mc_cid=8be8d92f8c&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
Billings Senior and Billings West expect a full house for Tuesday wrestling dual
BILLINGS — Wrestlers from Billings Senior and Billings West are preparing to wrestle in front of an enthusiastic crowd Tuesday night. The two teams will compete in the auxiliary gym at Senior beginning at 7 p.m. Senior home wrestling duals are normally held in the large gym at the high school. Youth wrestlers from the Darkhorse Wrestling Club and Team Champs will be in attendance to cheer on the Broncs and Bears. A majority of Darkhorse club members who end up wrestling in high school will wrestle at Senior, while many of the Team Champs grapplers who move on to the high school ranks will wrestle at West. “We are going to bring in some extra seats and put them right along the main bleachers,” Broncs coach Josh Beeman said. “We are going to try and make it loud and an exciting experience.” … Rest of the story at https://billingsgazette.com/sports/high-school/wrestling/billings-senior-and-billings-west-expect-a-full-house-for/article_521b71fc-fa17-5415-995f-9e09685d6477.html?mc_cid=55aa4b0df7&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
Davies begins wrestling program
Patriots pin Kilties for first D-II win
By ERIC BENEVIDES, Valley Breeze Sports Editor
LINCOLN – Like all inaugural high school programs, the Davies Tech wrestling team has experienced its share of ‘firsts’ this winter, from the Patriots’ first practice to their first out-of-state tournament, their first Division II meet, and the first weight class they won in their season opener on Dec. 18 in their home gym against Smithfield High. Unfortunately for the Patriots, they suffered a 66-12 defeat to the Sentinels, but last Wednesday, Jan. 8, Davies returned home to pick up its program’s historic first victory. Sophomore Matt Kravitz’s pin of Mount Pleasant High junior D’Arel Santos 53 seconds into the second round of their 182-pound match was the highlight of the night for the Patriots, who came away with a 36-23 victory. To the Kilties’ defense, they only brought five wrestlers to the meet, and while three of them won their matches and another one picked up a forfeit victory, the Patriots were awarded 30 points on forfeits. But that meant very little to head coach Geoff Poirier and his band of wrestlers. A win is a win, and after a month and a half of workouts that featured an education in High School Wrestling 101, it sure felt great to come away with a ‘W’. “It’s a stepping stone,” Poirier said. “It’s something to build on. We just talked about how we’re turning the corner really well, we’re pacing the way … Rest of the story at https://www.valleybreeze.com/2020-01-15/cumberland-lincoln-area/davies-begins-wrestling-program?mc_cid=8ef0a047a0&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b#.XiE9iBdMEkg
Lakewood wrestling coach Bob Veitch reaches 800 wins
By John Raffel / Sentinel contributor
Longtime Lakewood wrestling coach Robert Veitch has indicated he might be planning on stepping down at the end of this season. But his Vikings first decided to give Veitch quite a going away gift. His 800th career victory. This milestone came earlier this month against Leslie. It’s 800 wins for Veitch in 40 years as coach. There have been an incredible number of highlights. “I don’t know if there’s been any one special thing,” Veitch said. “We’ve had good teams for 35 years. Every kid is different every team is different. I guess the one biggest thing was when we beat Mason when they were ranked No. 2 in the state and Eaton Rapids was ranked No. 1. We beat both of them by one point at the regional championship.” Lakewood has been to the state semifinals twice but never was able to get into the finals. The Vikings have won their fair share of league (19), district (180) and regional titles. He’s only has 234 losses compared to 800 wins. Veitch is a Lake Odessa native and wrestled at Lakewood. He was third in the state at heavyweight in 1976. He went to Grand Rapids Junior College and wrestled for two seasons, followed by two more at Western Michigan University. Veitch was finishing college and started his coaching career in 1980. He took a substitute teaching job in Grand Ledge and started coaching at Lakewood. He was a physical and health education teacher for 36 years. “Norm Young was the coach before me,” Veitch said. “I would come back in the summer and help out. I needed someone to work out with, too, as I was going to college.” It was this relationship that got Veitch going into what would be a 40-year career. … Rest of the story at https://www.sentinel-standard.com/sports/20200116/lakewood-wrestling-coach-bob-veitch-reaches-800-wins?mc_cid=8ef0a047a0&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (January 16, 2020)— Twenty-three high school coaches from across the country have been selected as 2019 National Coaches of the Year by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Coaches Association. The NFHS, which has been recognizing coaches through an awards program since 1982, honors coaches in the top 10 girls sports and top 10 boys sports (by participation numbers), and in two “other” sports – one for boys and one for girls – that are not included in the top 10 listings. The NFHS also recognizes a spirit coach as a separate award category. Winners of NFHS awards must be active coaches during the year for which they receive their award. This year’s awards recognize coaches for the 2018-19 school year. Confidence, wins are expectation for Top Gun participants
By Chris Easterling

Top Gun Tournament to give wrestlers at Perry, Tuslaw and elsewhere a chance to potentially gain wins, confidence. Brent McBurney is acutely aware of what goes into being a wrestler. The Perry head coach knows all too well the less-than-enjoyable aspects of the sport. That’s why McBurney also understands the other side, the opposite of the pain and sometimes humbling on-mat results. Let’s be honest, wrestling, it’s a very demanding, mentally, physically tough sport,” McBurney said. “You throw some weight cutting in there, it’s not ideal for an average teenage kid to like it. So, there’s a fine balance where we try to keep the attitude in there and create ways to have fun with it and keep preaching that it’s a process. You’ve got to be willing to pay your dues in the practice room and go through tough times that no one’s willing to go through, and eventually you’re going to get rewarded for it.” The ultimate rewards for that work doesn’t happen until the end of the season, during the tournament. However, there’s always opportunities for that hard work to reap a little bit of what it sows, even in the middle of the season. For teams such as Perry, Tuslaw and Northwest, as well as nearly 50 others, an opportunity for just that exists this weekend. Those teams will all gather at Alliance High School, beginning Friday morning, for the two-day Top Gun Tournament. … Rest of the story at https://www.cantonrep.com/news/20200116/confidence-wins-are-expectation-for-top-gun-participants?mc_cid=8ef0a047a0&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
