Demon grapplers lead the way at Big East individual championship

STANHOPE — Coming off a dominating showing during dual competition, the Fike High wrestling team carried that over to Saturday’s 3-A Big East Conference individual tournament by winning eight of the contested weight classes in the Southern Nash gym.
Senior Aaron Bancroft, the reigning North Carolina High School Athletic Association 3-A champion at 160 pounds, stepped up to the 182-pound ranks and kept his 46-match unbeaten streak in 2019-20 intact after defeating Southern Nash junior Jadel Davis in the championship round.
Bancroft pinned SaDarius Lewis of Rocky Mount just 14 seconds into their semifinal encounter and dropped Davis to the mat 10 seconds into the final period. Despite his best efforts, Davis was injured on the takedown and could not continue, awarding the match to Bancroft.
Other Fike winners included junior Jayleen Bullock (43-3), who pinned Southern Nash junior Trondrayl Newsome 30 seconds into the 195-pound final.
Fike junior Zametrie Bagley (37-15) outpointed Luke Coble of Southern Nash 12-7 in the 170-pound final, while at 152, Golden Demons junior Vincent Page secured his 30th win against six losses by pinning Hunt senior Justin Rankin with nine seconds left in the opening period.
With regulation unable to declare a winner in the 145-pound Big East championship, Fike junior Patrick McCullen (45-5) required sudden victory to get past Southern Nash senior Noah Fulghum.
Garrett Weaver secured the Big East 138-pound title by pinning Joseph Murphy of Franklinton with 35 seconds remaining. Weaver, a senior, notched his 23rd win against three losses.
Fike freshman Barrett Klutey required just one match to claim the 120-pound title, pinning Franklinton’s Jacob Roberson 1:23 into their encounter.
