WHAC TO ADD MEN’S WRESTLING AS VARSITY SPORT FOR 2020-21

TDR Editor’s Notes ; It is significant when a conference adds or drops a sport because many times it will encourage schools without wrestling to add the sport. When the Division I Southeastern Conference dropped wrestling in the 1980s all of the schools with the sport dropped it. One would think that with the excess revenue from football that they could afford to sponsor other sports. Every school in the Big 10 has a team. Thus fans need to encourage the conference that their school is in to add sponsorship of a team. It will help to continue the growth in our sport at the college level.

The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) is set to add men’s wrestling as a championship sport for the 2020-21 season. The addition is the fifth new sport in the last five years for the WHAC and brings the total number of sponsored sports to 26, tying the Heart of America Conference for the second-most in the NAIA. The MidSouth Conference leads the way with 28 sports.

Five current WHAC schools – Cleary, Indiana Tech, Lourdes, Rochester, and Siena Heights – sponsor the sport already. It’s hoped that the total number of schools will increase to six soon. The WHAC joins eight other NAIA conferences sponsor the sport.
