Bears freshman Baysden pushes wrestling team to third round
When the wrestling season started for the New Bern Bears, freshman 106-pounder Michael Baysden wasn’t a starter. Tuesday night, he was just a star. In a second round match against Lumberton with the Bears and Pirates tied at 33-all, advancing came down to the last match – Baysden versus Lumberton’s Brock Chavis. After getting taken down and being behind 2-0, Baysden battled back to take control and eventually get a second period pin to send his team to the third round. “I was just feeling like ‘all right, let’s go,’” Baysden said. “I didn’t want to let my team down so I tried to just stay calm and cool and that’s what I did.” Bears’ head coach Bo Lansche was less cool and calm than his freshman but was as excited after the end result. “I was confident in him but I hated for it to come down to him having that kind of pressure on him,” Lansche said. “He’s a tough, gritty kid though man and he stepped up big time tonight.” Story at https://www.newbernsj.com/sports/20200204/bears-freshman-baysden-pushes-wrestling-team-to-third-round

HS Roundup: Laney wrestling falls in East Regional Final
Cardinal Gibbons 30, Laney 19 (NCHSAA 4A East Regional Final)
The Buccaneers just couldn’t find enough bonus points Friday at home and fell to the Crusaders in a rematch of last year’s 4A Eastern Regional Final. Laney took a 6-0 lead after wins from Mark Samuel (106) and Jayden Harrison in the first two bouts, but Cardinal Gibbons won four-straight from 120-through-138 to take a 16-6 lead. The next two bouts were victories for the Buccaneers, but the Crusaders did a good job avoiding pins against Marcus Mondragon (145) and Seth Thomas (152) to maintain a lead at 16-13. Laney lost at 160, but got a win from Devon Bell (170). Thanks to an unsportsmanlike penalty, Cardinal Gibbons’ lead was just 18-16 with five bouts left. Any momentum from Laney was quickly squashed after losing by pin at 182 and then falling at both 195 and 220. Emmanuel Bell (285) closed the match with a victory, but the Crusaders had already clinched the overall win.
Laney 40, New Bern 34 (NCHSAA 4A East Third Round)
Emmanuel Bell, Mark Samuel, Evan Kite, Noah Thomas and Conner Johnson all won with pins as the Buccaneers eased past the Bears in the first match Friday. Marcus Mondragon, Seth Thomas and Trystan Richardson also earned victories for Laney. The Bucs were up 40-10 and forfeited the final four bouts as they had already clinched the match.
