Big Red Wrestling Earns 300th All-Time Ivy League Victory in Win Over Harvard
ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell wrestling racked up its 300th all-time Ivy League victory on Saturday, Jan. 25 with a 32-9 win over Harvard. Following the win, the Big Red is now 300-52-1 in Ivy League duals dating back to the 1955-56 season (first season of Ivy League competition). Facing Brown in the nightcap of the doubleheader, the Big Red came out on top by a final score of 36-4, winning at nine of the ten weights. Wins over Harvard and Brown improves No. 18-ranked Cornell’s dual record to 8-5 overall and 3-0 in the Ivy League. Cornell opened its dual against Harvard with four straight victories, led by major decisions from Dom LaJoie at 125 pounds and Hunter Richard at 149. LaJoie scored a 12-3 upset over Harvard’s No. 15-ranked Nolan Hellickson, while Richard defeated Aaron Kruk by a 12-4 final. Its LaJoie’s second victory over a ranked opponent this season. Detwiler Wins 184 Pound All-Academy Championship; USCGA Bears Are Top DIII Team
COLORADO SPRINGS, Col. – Paul Detwiler won the 184 pound championship and Coast Guard, ranked 10th nationally in Division III, won the Division III team championship and placed fourth overall of the seven schools at the All-Academy Championships at the Air Force Academy.
Detwiler became just the second Coast Guard wrestler to win an All-Academy Championship. Nate Giorgio won the 133 pound championship and was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler in 2015. The Bears had a pair of wrestlers, Nick Moreno and Detwiler earn spots in the championship match while Caden Mareno, Jon Wagner and Patrick Irwin all wrestled in the third place match.

Kent State Fends off Bulls for Key Dual Victory
BUFFALO, NY- Kent State rallied off victories in five of the first seven matches and the Golden Flashes knocked off the Buffalo Bulls 20-17 on Saturday afternoon. A tech-fall by Andrew McNally and Tim Rooney victory in a battle of top-20 wrestlers to highlighted the six individual victories for the Golden Flashes. Saturday’s dual started at 165 and took the early lead. Andrew McNally answered back with his team-leading 26th victory of the season. He did so in convincing fashion, a 24-4 tech-fall, earning the Flashes a big five points to give Kent State a 5-4 lead. CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – No. 15 Illinois wrestling started strong and pulled away during the second half of its dual against No. 23 Michigan, defeating the Wolverines by a final score of, 20-13, at Huff Hall on Sunday. Redshirt freshman Justin Cardani (125), senior Travis Piotrowski (133) and redshirt junior Dylan Duncan (141) won the first three bouts of the match by decision to give Illinois an early, 9-0, lead. Redshirt freshman Danny Braunagel (165) and redshirt senior Joey Gunther (174) each won by major decision, giving the Illini crucial bonus points at the weight-classes to go up 17-7. Redshirt freshman Zac Braunagel sealed the Illini victory with his comeback, 5-4, decision victory over Jelani Embree at 184-pounds, which put the dual score officially out of Michigan’s reach. No. 10 Upper Iowa topped the Dragons of Minnesota State University Moorhead 38-6 in a Northern Sun Conference dual on Sunday afternoon in Fayette. CLARION, Pa. – The Old Dominion wrestling team (6-8, 4-2 MAC) wrapped up its weekend trip to Pennsylvania with a 25-9 win over Clarion (8-5, 5-3 MAC) on Sunday afternoon. Junior 285-pounder Will Hilliard capped off the Monarch victory with a ranked win, taking down No. 27 Ty Bagoly in a 9-3 win by decision in the final bout of the dual. Hilliard jumped ahead of the ranked Golden Eagle early with a takedown and a four-point near-fall less than 30 seconds into the match, giving him a 6-0 advantage. Drew Black to be Inducted into NEWA Hall of Fame on Sunday
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Wesleyan wrestling head coach Drew Black will be inducted into the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Hall of Fame this Sunday, January 19 at 3:30 pm at the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence, R.I. The induction ceremony is in conjunction with the NEWA Dual Meet Championships. Black is the only coach in the 2020 NEWA Hall of Fame Induction Class. He’ll be joined by former wrestlers Joseph Adam of Trinity, Brian Glatz of WPI, and John Marsh of Bridgewater State, as well as contributor Dwayne Dawson of Western New England. “To be called a Coach is an honor,” said Black. “Coaching at Wesleyan is an honor and it has been a tremendous and impactful life experience for me. I want to thank John Biddiscombe for believing in me and hiring me 22 years ago. It is great to work for and work with people at Wesleyan who care about the sport of wrestling. Someone once said, “A coach impacts more lives in one year than most people do in their lifetime.” I hope I have been able to make a positive impact on our Wesleyan wrestlers’ lives and I look forward to continuing to do so for many more years ahead. ” Black is in his 22nd year at the helm of the Wesleyan wrestling program and 26th year coaching overall. He is the winningest coach in Wesleyan wrestling history, which began in 1934, and entered the year with a 209-178-2 overall record at Wesleyan. Black also spent three years coaching at Phoenix College (junior college) and one year at Stow-Monroe Falls High School in Ohio. In 2010 and 2011, Black helped guide the Cardinals to a third-place finish at the New England Team Championships and in 2012, Wesleyan was crowned the NEWA Conference Champions. He was named the NEWA Coach of the Year in 2010 and 2012. During the 2013 campaign, Black’s squad finished sixth overall at the Division III National Duals and was only the second team in New England history to place at the national duals at that time. The 2013 squad also ranked No. 10 in the national rankings, marking the highest ranking in program history, and in 2018 Wesleyan placed 18th at the NCAA Wrestling Championships. Under Coach Black’s guidance, Wesleyan has placed in the top-four at the NEWA Dual Team Championships eight times. The Cardinals won in 2011, finished second in 2002 and ’13, took third in 2007, ’09, ’10, and ’12, and placed fourth in 2016. Univ. Pittsburgh-Johnstown’s Pecora becomes college wrestling’s coaching wins king
College wrestling has a new coaching wins king. Pat Pecora moved to the top of the all-time dual victory list Friday night when Pitt-Johnstown defeated Mercyhurst 22-12, providing the longtime leader of the Mountain Cats with his 617th win. The previous record across all college divisions had been held for the past 46 years by former Oregon State coach Dale Thomas. Pecora is in his 44th season at Pitt-Johnstown. He took over the program as a 22-year-old after seeing an advertisement for the job in a local newspaper. His teams have won 22 NCAA regional titles and a pair of Division II national titles.
