UNC’s Monday Named ACC Wrestler of the Week
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – North Carolina junior Kennedy Monday has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week after his technical fall win over the nation’s third-ranked wrestler at 165 pounds led the 12th-ranked Tar Heels to a 23-10 team victory at No. 3 Virginia Tech in last Friday night’s ACC opener.  
Monday, ranked No. 17 nationally, put UNC in firm control of the match with his 21-6 victory over the Hokies’ David McFadden. With a large Cassell Coliseum crowd and ACC Network audience looking on, Monday stormed out of the gate with a 6-2 lead in the first period and never looked back. The Arlington, Texas, native is now 17-4 for the Tar Heels this season with a 9-1 dual-meet record. Limestone Wrestling Takes Down Newberry, 23-18|
NEWBERRY, S.C. – For the first time in program history, the nationally 20th ranked Limestone College men’s wrestling team picked up a win of the Wolves of Newberry College in dramatic fashion as the Saints were able to take the victory over the 13th ranked team in the country, 23-18. After a close loss at 125, the Saints kicked off their scoring on the evening with a 12-8 decision for senior Majid Corbett (Sumter, S.C.), ranked No. 12 in the country, over regionally sixth-ranked Austin neal to pull the team score back even a 3-3.  The top ranked wrestler in the country at 141 lbs, Isiah Royal was able to pick up a 7-3 decision for the Wolves to take back the lead 6-3. Newberry would take one more match at 149 lbs. before the Saints were able to string together a pair of victories over the next two weight classes.  Redshirt junior Kurtis Aimable (Orlando, Fla.) notched an upset over regionally ranked Nick Giantonio by a 9-4 decision to bring the score back to 10-6 before sophomore Garrett Beam (Asbury, N.J.) swung the score in favor of the Saints with a pin at 165 lbs. to give the Blue and Gold their first lead of the day at 12-10. Another Newberry win at 174 brought the match back to their side for the last time as both sophomore Kyle Daley (Indian Land, S.C.) and senior Matt Rudy (Summerville, S.C.) took six-point DQ victories to bring the match up to a 24-19 score line.  As a heated rivalry brewed on the mat, the referee deducted one team point from each squad to bring the final decision to 23-18. Cobras Rally for 22-19 Victory at Queens (N.C.) Monday Night
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Coker University wrestling team rallied for a 22-19 South Atlantic Conference Carolinas victory at Queens (N.C.) on Monday night (Jan. 27). Queens took a 4-0 lead off a major decision at 125 pounds, before Chris Poland picked up a win by forfeit at 133 pounds to put the Cobras ahead 6-4. NWHOF Upper New York Chapter names 2020 honorees
Includes former UNC-Greensboro coach Tom Shifflet: Tom has experienced an exceptional career in wrestling from his days as a wrestler for his father’s Sweet Home High School team and his 1990 winning of the NYSPHSAA championships to his college wrestling career at Edinboro College under coach Bruce Baumgartner, where he was a three-time NCAA All-American. In 1995 Shifflet was named the Eastern Wrestling League Wrestler of the Year, Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Year, and was selected as the Athlete of the Year at Edinboro University. Additionally, his coaching accomplishments are equally impressive.
