First girls state wrestling tournament a success
The first ever girls state wrestling tournament took place this past Saturday at York High School. More than 100 girls took part in the event, which drew quite a bit in attendance. When it was said and done, 14 girls were named state champions and West Point-Beemer took home the team title. Tournament director and former High Plains coach Norm Manstedt was more than pleased with how it went. “It was a great day all the way around. There was great wrestling by the female athletes, who wrestled their hearts out,” Manstedt said. “Fans really got into it. It was everything I had hoped it would be.” The area had a state champion as well. Twin Loup junior Ally Micheel took home the 152-pound title after defeating West Point-Beemer’s Brithany Cervantes with an 18-2 technical fall in the final. …. rest of the story at https://www.theindependent.com/sports/preps/first-girls-state-wrestling-tournament-a-success/article_21147b42-4874-11ea-a9e6-dbcf260ef86a.html?mc_cid=43214129f0&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

#WOMENSWEDNESDAY: Maroulis, Conder, Ragan in Pan Am Olympic Qualifier Special Wrestle-off for a second time
BY GARY ABBOTT, USA WRESTLING
Video Playlist – 2016 Pan Am Olympic Qualifier Special Wrestle-offs
This Saturday, there will be a Special Wrestle-off for three spots on the U.S. women’s freestyle team that will compete at the 2020 Pan American Olympic Qualifier in Canada. In total, there will be eight National Team athletes competing in the Special Wrestle-off, including seven past World Team members, four World medalists, two World champions and an Olympic champion. For three of those competing in Marietta on Saturday, this is like deja-vu all over again. Just about four years ago, Helen Maroulis, Whitney Conder and Alli Ragan were part of a Special Wrestle-off for the 2016 Pan American Olympic Games Qualifier. Back in 2016, the USA Wrestling procedures allowed a past World medalist to challenge a 2015 World Team member in the non-qualified Olympic weight classes. Up for grabs were three weight classes, in which the winner would compete at the 2016 Pan American Olympic Games Qualifier in Frisco, Texas. …. story at https://www.teamusa.org/USA-Wrestling/Features/2020/February/05/Second-straight-Pan-Am-Olympic-Wrestleoff-for-three-women?mc_cid=43214129f0&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

High School Insider: Rule regarding forfeits costs Pennsylvania team district title
As we hit February, the focus around most of the country in high school wrestling points toward dual tournaments and the individual postseason. In Pennsylvania, they’ve just recently wrapped up district dual tournaments, with the state tournament taking place over the coming weekend. One of the surprises came in District XI. The Lehigh Valley district is home to a number of state powerhouses in AAA (the larger classification) such as Bethlehem Catholic, Nazareth, Northampton and Bethlehem Liberty. But we head to AA, where big-time programs Notre Dame-Green Pond and Saucon Valley squared off. The two teams had met twice prior, with Notre Dame taking both duals by a combined 28 points.  This time, however, it was different. …. rest of story at https://www.trackwrestling.com/tw/PortalPost.jsp?postId=344316135&mc_cid=920b1cb2df&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Chandler’s Stefana Jelacic accomplishes rare feat at high school boys wrestling sectionals
Stefana Jelacic made history with female wrestlers who competed in the inaugural Arizona high school girls state championship tournament one year ago. The Chandler senior and reigning 118-pound girls state champion decided at the start of this season that wasn’t enough to cap off her high school wrestling career. On Saturday, Jelacic became the second female in state history to qualify for the boys championship tournament at the Division I Section I wrestling tournament at her team’s home gym. She could become the third female to win a medal in the Arizona high school boys wrestling state championship tournament. The first was Miyuu Yamamoto of Tempe Corona del Sol finished in sixth place in the 103 in 1993 and the second was Shauna Isbell of Flagstaff Coconino when she placed fourth in the 112 in 2009. After eschewing girls competitions all season to wrestle against boys only, Jelacic, whose duals record is 24-8, stood on the podium for second place after Chandler Basha junior Kayden Galarneau pinned her in that sectional’s 113 title match. …. rest of the story at https://www.azcentral.com/story/sports/high-school/2020/02/08/chandlers-stefana-jelacic-arizona-high-school-wrestling/4704225002/?mc_cid=5d2199bc2e&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

(Pennsylvania)
In PIAA wrestling, separation of church and state is getting more difficult by the hour
More than 20 years ago, neither Bethlehem Catholic nor the Allentown Diocese tried to stop diminutive soccer player Samantha Smith from potentially getting run over by a 250-pound rusher as the kicker for the Golden Hawks’ football team. She had a strong leg, she was qualified, she was allowed to play in games.
No problem.
Flash forward to the present, following an explosion of girls wrestling over the last decade, the Allentown Diocese and the Pennsylvania Catholic Conference still won’t budge on its stance that their boys cannot wrestle girls. Doesn’t matter if they’re the same weight. Perhaps if they were outfitted with shoulder pads and helmets? ….. rest of the story at https://www.mcall.com/sports/varsity/wrestling/mc-spt-piaa-2a-state-wrestling-20200210-55qpdht2cvdizmekcluor7iruy-story.html?mc_cid=5d2199bc2e&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
