2020 Roy Heverly Award Winners


Mark Samuel of Wilmington Laney & River Carroll of Swansboro named ‘Roy Heverly Award’ winners as top Underclassmen in Eastern North Carolina.
Samuel and Carroll will be presented the 19th & 20th Roy Heverly Award as the top underclassman scholastic wrestlers in eastern North Carolina this fall. The TDR hopes that this can be done in front of a large gathering of sports fans yet details will be determined in August. Sophomore Mark Samuel went undefeated in 51 matches as 4-A State Champion at 106 lbs. for Laney H.S, Junior 3-A State Champion at 160 lbs. River Carroll of Swansboro also went undefeated in over 50 matches against North Carolina wrestlers. His only loss was a decision to a Virginia wrestler who went on to be an undefeated state champion in his state finals. More details will be reported later when the presentation dates are confirmed.

The award is named in honor of former state champion Roy Heverly, a 4 time state medalist at West Carteret and three time All-American at The University of North Carolina-Pembroke. The TakeDown Report, an on-line publication promotes amateur wrestling in eastern North Carolina, sponsors these Awards. “These awards recognize the most successful wrestlers in the area each year.” Fleming noted, “It encourages the young men from the teams in the eastern part of the state with another opportunity for others to realize the hard work, determination and discipline it takes to be a top wrestler,” he added. The TDR also ranks wrestlers in a TDR Top 12 List that is displayed on the TDR Blog page. The TDR has been involved in the publicity of amateur wrestling in North Carolina for over 20 years.
