ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Jordan Burroughs is arguably the best American wrestler of all time. After winning two NCAA titles for Nebraska, JB won his first world championship in 2011. He’d go on to win the 2012 Olympics, as well as subsequent world titles in 2013, 2015 and 2017. He’s one of the best to ever step on the mat – period. 2 } – College football parents take note of Ivy League suspending fall sports amid pandemic
By J. BRADY MCCOLLOUGHSTAFF WRITER JULY 8,
It’s been almost six weeks since Chris and Mya Hinton waded into the growing pool of advocates for college football players. Driven to action by schools deciding to bring athletes back to campuses during the pandemic, the Hintons, who have sons currently playing at Michigan and Stanford, started College Football Parents 247. The group now has 1,400 members. Hinton, speaking for the larger population of parents in an interview Wednesday, said they have not been rooting against a season. That was never the point. Their goals are for parents to have a seat at the table alongside the schools and NCAA, to have their questions answered as to how it can be done safely. They felt much worse about that prospect July 1 than June 1, though, with positive case numbers and hospitalizations skyrocketing across the country. And Wednesday, when the Ivy League announced it would not play any sports before Jan. 1, … rest of story at https://www.latimes.com/sports/story/2020-07-08/college-football-parents-take-note-of-ivy-league-suspending-fall-sports-amid-pandemic?mc_cid=35441de679&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
3 } -BOOK REVIEW: WRESTLING WITH ANGELS IS A GREAT READ, ABOUT ADDICTION, REDEMPTION, WRESTLING AND MORE
I had the opportunity last week to read a new book written by a life-long wrestler, NCAA All-American and Veterans World champion John Hanrahan, entitled Wrestling With Angels. I recommend this book to anyone involved in the sport of wrestling, as well as anyone who has an open mind to learn more about some of life’s most difficult challenges. While it is an excellent book, it is not an easy read. What I mean is a lot of books about wrestlers and other sports heroes only tell about all of the athlete’s successes and the positive qualities of their lives. Hanrahan’s book is not that story. He tells his wrestling story very well. But the book also gives a completely honest look at the dark parts of his life, including … rest of story at https://www.teamusa.org/USA-Wrestling/Features/2020/June/29/Hanrahan-Book-Review?mc_cid=7ba10e0d72&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
4 } – N.J. wrestling legend Jordan Burroughs is coming home, will join PRTC
By Bill Evans | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com
Jordan Burroughs is coming home.
Burroughs, an Olympic gold medalist and four-time world champion, will join the Pennsylvania Regional Training Center as a resident athlete in September, 2021. He has been the face of U.S. wrestling for much of the last decade. A Sicklerville native, Burroughs will continue his training in Philadelphia after next year’s Olympic Games as the PRTC is on the campus of Penn and Drexel in Philadelphia. Burroughs will become the latest New Jersey athlete to join the PRTC after Joey McKenna and David McFadden made the move recently. The announcement is also an indication Burroughs will not retire after the Olympics when he will be 33 years old. “The infrastructure that has been created at the PRTC in Philadelphia will provide my family and me the best … rest of story at https://www.nj.com/sports/2020/07/nj-wrestling-legend-jordan-burroughs-is-coming-home-will-join-prtc.html?mc_cid=43f0dbddeb&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
5 } – DeBias still using lessons he learned wrestling
(EDITOR’S NOTE: The Times News is running a series of stories on former area athletes and what they have been doing since graduating from high school. The subject of today’s “Catching up With” is former Northern Lehigh High School wrestling standout Cory DeBias)
By TJ ENGLE tengle@tnonline.com
Cory DeBias wrestled his last college match in 2003. But wrestling is still impacting his life today. Seventeen years after walking off the mat for the final time as an NCAA Division III bronze medalist, DeBias continues to lean on the lessons he learned from the sport. A 1998 Northern Lehigh graduate, DeBias said what he has learned from wrestling has continued to help him throughout all facets of his life. “Wrestling is such a part of me. I kind of wear it everywhere I go,” DeBias said. “It’s all the lessons I learned from it. It’s funny how it shapes everything that you do.” DeBias said he doesn’t go through a day without somehow connecting it back to wrestling. “From organizing the emails on my desktop at work, … rest of story at https://www.tnonline.com/20200717/debias-still-using-lessons-he-learned-wrestling/?mc_cid=54266e1576&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
6 } – DAKE TAKES OUT CHAMIZO IN SATURDAY-NIGHT FLOWRESTLING EVENT
AUSTIN, Texas – FloWrestling hosted a big night of wrestling on Saturday night, featuring five exciting matchups, including a super match between a pair of two-time World champions Kyle Dake and Frank Chamizo as the main event. All five bouts were contested in men’s freestyle. Below is a breakdown of each match.
79 kg/174 pounds – Kyle Dake def. Frank Chamizo, 4-3
A match with three lead changes, the Dake vs. Chamizo bout lived up to the competitiveness that was expected. A 2015 (65 kg) and 2017 (70 kg) World champion for Italy, Chamizo scored first from a shot clock point, but two-time defending World champion at 79 kg Dake closed out the period leading on criteria, thanks to a late step out. In the second period, the only scoring came from an entertaining sequence that resulted in exposure for Chamizo, then a reversal and gut wrench for Dake to put him up, 4-3, and ultimately give him the win. However, with less than 10 seconds remaining, Chamizo shot a single and nearly took down Dake… rest of story at https://www.teamusa.org/USA-Wrestling/Features/2020/July/25/Dake-beats-Chamizo-in-Flo-event?mc_cid=1419bf9910&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

10 } – Rival Portland wrestling clubs are rooted in lifelong friendship
How did Matt Lindland — a 2000 Olympic silver medalist and 2001 World silver medalist — go 0-8 during the state freestyle and Greco-Roman tournament in Oregon shortly after his freshman season of high school? Ever the competitor, Lindland entered both Cadets and Juniors in freestyle and Greco-Roman. He went 0-2 in all four brackets for a grand total of eight losses over the course of one weekend. That’s when Lindland knew something had to change. The Logan, Oregon, native watched the awards ceremony and noticed that most of the medalists were wearing black and yellow Peninsula Wrestling Club singlets or Cobra Wrestling Club’s red, white and blue. He researched wrestling clubs and learned that Peninsula and Cobra were both located in Portland. Lindland’s initial choice of Cobra was unscientific. Once he returned home from his thrashing at state, he discovered that Cobra Wrestling Club was three bus stops from his high school, while Peninsula was four. The following Monday, Lindland set out to improve his wrestling skills at Cobra. By the time he got his driver’s license, Lindland was training out of both clubs. Different coaches. Different training partners. Different philosophies. Both were winners.
Peninsula Wrestling Club, founded in 1970, is led by Roy Pittman.
Cobra Wrestling Club, founded in 1972, is led by Marc Sprague.
Pittman and Sprague went to high school together and worked at … rest of story at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1595820040477&twSessionId=thjstxpaju&postId=787212135&mc_cid=1419bf9910&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
