1 } – Can wrestling survive a ‘broken’ college model?
By Mike Finn
This spring’s COVID-19 pandemic has certainly led to loss among an ongoing and countless number of people within this country. That would, of course, include the loss of lives as over 110,000 U.S. citizens had died as of June 7. There have been other departures from a normal way of the life, including in the sports world where both professional and amateur leagues have either canceled or postponed seasons and championships. That included NCAA wrestling, where all three national tournaments — set to take place in March — were canceled. Among those was the Division I tournament, where 330 wrestlers were set to compete in Minneapolis, including four wrestlers from Old Dominion: seniors Sa’Derian Perry (141) Larry Early (157) and Antonio Agee (184) and sophomore Killian Cardinale (125). But two weeks later, the Monarch wrestling program, which has been around since the 1957-58 academic year, took a bigger hit when the school announced it was dropping wrestling.
The official ODU statement read: “The decision in part developed from the findings of a six-month study of the athletics program by an outside consultant. The comprehensive report reviewed the national college sports landscape, identified current and future financial challenges and evaluated Title IX compliance, which led to the recommendation to discontinue a varsity sport. Once completely implemented, it is estimated that athletics will have an expense savings of approximately $1 million.”
But ODU officials also mentioned the on-going COVID-19 crisis was part of their decision. “Our decision became even more clear during this Coronavirus crisis, which we know will have significant impact on future athletics budgets,” said ODU athletics director Dr. Camden Wood Selig. “This decision will better allow the remaining sports to compete at a national level.” This is not the first time college wrestling has heard such a comment, especially in the 1980s when the majority of programs were cut because of the Title IX dilemma. There are some who believe the COVID-19 pandemic is now being used as the excuse to cut Olympic sports. That was apparent when five lower-level conferences asked the NCAA to drop the requirement of eight men’s and eight women’s sports among Division I FBS (football bowl subdivision programs) and six men’s/eight women’s sports in Division I FCS (football championship subdivision). … rest of story at https://www.win-magazine.com/2020/06/can-wrestling-survive-a-broken-college-model/?mc_cid=1ad1a557de&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

2 } – DI Council extends recruiting dead period in all sports
DI Council extends recruiting dead period in all sports
Division I dead period will continue through Aug. 31
June 25, 2020 By Michelle Brutlag Hosick
The Division I Council extended the recruiting dead period in all sports through Aug. 31. The Council met virtually Thursday afternoon. The full Council and the Council Coordination Committee will continue to review the recruiting dead periods on a regular basis. A dead period precludes all in-person recruiting. Phone calls and correspondence can continue to occur. Additionally, the Men’s  and Women’s Basketball Oversight Committees indicated they are not planning to recommend any changes to the summer access model that was adopted last week, which permits institutions to begin summer countable athletically related activities in basketball beginning July 20 and may include up to eight hours per week of weight … rest of story at http://www.ncaa.org/about/resources/media-center/news/di-council-extends-recruiting-dead-period-all-sports?mc_cid=4a8eea0a01&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

3 } – NCAA DIVISION 1 COUNCIL TO ADOPT NEW TRANSFER RULES BY JANUARY 2021
BY NICOLE MILLER 9 July 01st, 2020
The NCAA Division 1 Council has committed to adopt a uniform transfer rule by January 2021. Under the current rules, student-athletes are allowed to begin playing immediately after transferring in all sports except baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, football and men’s ice hockey. However, most major conferences do not allow students from any sport transferring schools within the conference to begin competing immediately, generally requiring a year of residency at the new institution. With the new uniform rule, the committee hopes to promote flexibility for student-athletes under all circumstances.
In order to promote the changes, the Division I Council Coordination Committee expanded the Transfer Waiver Working Group adding additional members from the Committee on Academics, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and Council standing committees. The Transfer Waiver Working Group will be charged with studying the effects of transfers on student-athletes, and coming up with a viable solution to the issue that can be translated … rest of story at https://swimswam.com/ncaa-division-1-council-to-adopt-new-transfer-rules-by-january-2021/?mc_cid=24498831e8&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

4 } – NJ State Champ Soldano Chooses Rutgers
The good news continues to trickle out of New Brunswick as Rutgers received a verbal commitment today from one of the state’s top rising juniors. Brian Soldano (High Point, NJ) was a 160 lb New Jersey state champion in 2020 at 160 lbs, which helped him earn a #5 ranking at the weight heading into the 2020-21 season and he’s currently the #38th ranked wrestler in the Class of 2022 . Over the last year, Soldano has placed third at the Super 32 and seventh a 16U Freestyle Nationals in Fargo. He also won six of seven matches at the National Duals. Brian was a state qualifier as a freshman at 160 lbs, as well.
Just over a week ago, Rutgers head coach Scott Goodale announced that Sebastian Rivera would be joining the program as a graduate transfer. Soldano is the first recruit from the Class of 2022 that has committed to the Scarlet Knights. Three rising seniors Kyonte Hamilton (Georgetown Prep, MD), Joey Oliveri (Hanover Park, NJ), and Dylan Weaver (Lyndhurst, NJ), all of who are top-100 recruits, have given verbals to Goodale’s team. If Soldano can hold 174 lbs it would be a great fit for the Scarlet Knights. … rest of story at https://news.theopenmat.com/high-school-wrestling/nj-state-champ-soldano-chooses-rutgers/78421?mc_cid=097a633e42&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

By Jimmy Gillispie jgillispie@stwnewspress.com
In addition to wanting to further his wrestling career past Stillwater High School, Carter Young is also thinking about his academics. That’s why the two-time state wresting champion, who’s entering his senior year, committed to continuing his athletic and academic career at prestigious Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. He recently made that official on Twitter. “I had known for a little bit that I was going to go there,” Young said during a phone interview. “I was just making sure that I got in before I announced it. It’s been a bit crazy since that day. It’s exciting.” Recently retired SHS wrestling coach Doug Chesbro, who coached Young for two years before hanging up his coaching career after three decades within the program, had a hunch Young would choose one of the most prestigious academic universities in the country.
Young chose Northwestern over Oklahoma State, Princeton and Michigan – all of which he also visited before the coronavirus pandemic shut down on-campus recruiting visits. “It’s awesome,” Chesbro said. … rest of story at https://www.stwnewspress.com/sports/high_school_sports/stillwaters-young-commits-to-northwestern/article_03082cc9-54b7-5072-974f-0f8ff0e2abc5.html?mc_cid=78726f35ba&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

8 } – Penns Valley’s Malachi DuVall talks commitment to coach Cary Kolat and Navy wrestling
Penns Valley wrestler Malachi DuVall and his dad had a dream school in mind for college. They’d done their research on academics and athletics and decided that Navy was the place DuVall wanted to be. That was before he made his run to third place in the PIAA State Championships at 152 pounds in March. Once DuVall made that run, more phone calls from colleges started to roll in and the contact picked up. About two weeks after his junior season came to an end, he received a FaceTime request. The number calling him was that of Navy’s new wrestling coach Cary Kolat — a four-time Pennsylvania state champ, two-time NCAA champ and World medalist. “Cary got the coaching job and we thought … rest of story at https://www.centredaily.com/sports/high-school/article244426817.html?mc_cid=fb559ea200&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
