This was supposed be the year former Benton wrestler Zain Retherford was to be at the Olympics. But with that postponed to 2021 the Penn State All American is back near his home at Ride Out Wrestling teaching a clinic. Zain Retherford, 3- time NCAA champion wrestler says “ I just love coming and teaching love teaching youth wrestlers. Honestly, it makes me better and learn and understand technique and being close to my hometown it is awesome. I was in there shoes not too long ago. 2 } – UPDATED QUALIFIERS FOR 2020 U.S. OLYMPIC TEAM TRIALS AS OF JULY 30, 2020
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – USA Wrestling will post regular updates on the athletes who have qualified for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials, which will determine the 2020 Olympic Team in all three styles—men’s and women’s freestyle and Greco-Roman. The U.S. Olympic Team Trials have been postponed. They were originally set for April 4-5 at the Bryce Jordan Center on the campus of Penn State University in University Park, Pa. Discussions are underway to reschedule at a later date at Bryce Jordan Center. The winners of the Trials will compete for the United States at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, if their respective weight has been qualified. 4 } – 2020 ARMED FORCES RESULTS CHANGED AFTER ATHLETE DISQUALIFIED; MUELLER QUALIFIES FOR OLYMPIC TRIALS; MARINES WIN GRECO-ROMAN TITLE
Armed Forces Sports has notified USA Wrestling that an athlete who participated in the 2020 Armed Forces Wrestling Championships has had his results disqualified, thus changing the outcome of the competition, which was held at Naval Station Kitsap, Wash. from February 20-24. The results for Sergeant Vladyslav Dombrovskiy of the U.S. Army have been disqualified, based upon a USADA suspension due to his anti-doping violation. Armed Forces Sports changed the results in compliance with the USADA decision. The athlete competed at 77 kg in Greco-Roman and 79 kg in men’s freestyle. CORSIER-SUR-VEVEY, Switzerland (July 30) — A move from the mat to the home office was never planned, but for United World Wrestling the transition from mat-based training to online learning is showing positive results. The hourlong webinars, launched in June, have a been a huge success with more than 40 being delivered by the development department across several languages and attracting viewership from all five continents. “Through the pandemic has proven to be challenging in a number of ways, the wrestling community has shown resilience,” said UWW Development Director Deqa Niamkey. “These are challenging times we have managed to engage coaches, referees and national federations on a weekly basis with highly renowned experts to keep our community motivated and learn best practices. 6 } – Two-Year Countdown to Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games
Today marks the two-year countdown to the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, set for July 28, 2022.
The Commonwealth Games is an international multi-sport event held every four years with athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations. The sport of wrestling has been ncluded in every Commonwealth Games except 1990, 1998 and 2006. If there were no COVID-19, and if the International Olympic Committee had not postponed then rescheduled the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, today would have been the first day of the wrestling competition. Over the next seven days, we will review the Olympic wrestling situation, covering the weight classes and athletes who would have been showcased in Tokyo on each of the days. We will look at what nations are already qualified in each weight class, and what athletes might be in line to reach the Olympics in the spots still available. The plans for Olympic gold medal wrestler Jordan Burroughs to get back on the podium in 2020 might have been delayed once the Tokyo Games were pushed off until next year, but he has not wavered in his commitment to his sport. His weight class, 163 pounds, keeps him focused and disciplined when it comes to he gym and his nutrition. Burroughs opened up his training to Men’s Health and took us inside a workout (pre-quarantine) led by his coach, Mark Manning, head wrestling coach at the University of Nebraska. “Part of being the best in the world is being physically prepared, mentally prepared, and then emotionally prepared. Today, July 23, is exactly one year prior to the start of the Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, which will begin July 23, 2021. The event was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and rescheduled almost exactly one year after it was scheduled to take place. At this point, the United States has competed in two of the three stages of Olympic qualifying, and has qualified 15 of the 18 weight classes for the Olympic Games. Included are all six women’s freestyle weight classes, five of the six men’s freestyle weight classes and four of the six Greco-Roman weight classes. 10 } – Executive Committee Announces Cancelation of Upcoming Events
CORSIER-SUR-VEVEY, Switzerland (August 5) — The United World Wrestling executive committee (EC) held a virtual meeting today to review the impact of COVID-19 on the future of the Cadet and Junior European Championships. Due to the ongoing pandemic the EC voted to cancel all events planned for September and October, including the European Cadet Championship scheduled for 5-11 October in Poland and the European Junior Championship planned on 19-25 October 2020 in North Macedonia. “We will continue to monitor the worldwide response to the pandemic,” said United World Wrestling president Nenad Lalovic. “We take seriously the responsibility to care for our athletes safety and health.
