Wrestling History – # 18

TDR Editor’s Notes ; History can teach us perspective and can inspire growth. Many lessons are learned from great coaches (#1, #2, #4, & #9), and some from losses to competitors (#5 & #6). The examples of heroes we admire (#8 & #10) and successful accomplishments (in #3 & #7) are also historic and can provide teachable moments.

1 } – Throwback Tulsa: A look back at Gallagher-Iba Arena’s history on OSU wrestling coach Ed Gallagher’s birthday
Happy birthday to the late Oklahoma State legendary wrestling coach Ed Gallagher, who would have turned 133 years old on Saturday.
He died on Aug. 28, 1940 at age 52. However, his legacy continues on through his namesake on “the Rowdiest Arena in the Country,” OSU’s Gallagher-Iba Arena.
Gallagher coached OSU (then Oklahoma A&M) to 11 national championships when he coached the Cowboys from 1916-40. However, he was not able to coach in what would later be known as Gallagher-Iba Arena; originally known as Gallagher Hall. The building dedicated in February 1939. 2 } – Jim Moulsoff: My Wrestling Hero
Today’s installment of My Wrestling Hero features Jim Moulsoff. The Augsburg coach hares his thoughts on his wrestling heroes, including former North Dakota State coach Bucky Maughan, the Peterson brothers and the Zilverberg brothers. 
These are Moulsoff’s words on his wrestling heroes:
“I grew up in Breckenridge, Minnesota, so I think about the wrestling experience there. I think about Bucky Maughan since North Dakota State was close. They were so tough and going to camp in 1979 and there were only 30 kids. 3 } – Daniel Twito of Merchant Marines won an NCAA title after spending 300 days at sea
Daniel Twito won an individual NCAA Division III wrestling championship for the United States Merchant Marine Academy. 4 } – Leroy Vega: My Wrestling Hero
Today’s installment of My Wrestling Hero features Leroy Vega. The three-time All-American and Purdue assistant shares his thoughts on his wrestling hero: J Robinson. 
These are Vega’s words on his wrestling hero:
“I would have to say overall my wrestling hero would be J Robinson. J, outside of wrestling, the type of guy he is, of doing anything for you is unbelievable and great. I think his story is great. I think the way he led a program, the way that he presented himself and always fought for what he believed in was something I liked and learned from him at Minnesota. He taught me that you might piss somebody off with something you believe in, but if you stand firm in what you believe in and keep fighting that it’s all going to work out in the end. 5 } – Matt Ghaffari: My Wrestling Hero
Today’s installment of My Wrestling Hero features Matt Ghaffari. The 1996 Olympic silver medalist and three-time World medalist shares his thoughts on his wrestling heroes: Gholamreza Takhti, Russ Hellickson and Dan Gable. 
“I was born in Iran and in Iran wrestling is the national sport. It was on TV all the time. When I came to America, I was in love with wrestling. There was a famous wrestler, (Gholamreza) Takhti who was a multi-time Olympic and World champion. He got caught in politics and there was a conspiracy about how he died. 6 } – Mark Perry: My Greatest Loss
Mark Perry grew up with dreams of becoming a four-time Oklahoma state high school champion, and he was seconds away from winning a title as a freshman for Stillwater when he got tossed to his back in the closing seconds to drop a 7-6 decision against Broken Arrow’s Brandon Tucker.   Tucker went on to become a four-time state champ before wrestling at Purdue, while Perry’s career changed course. 
At the time, Perry’s father, Mark Sr., was an assistant at Oklahoma State. Mark Sr. sent his son to New Jersey to train that summer under coach Jeff Buxton at Blair Academy. Days before his sophomore year was set to begin at Stillwater High School, Mark Jr. elected instead to enroll at Blair.  During his time there, he developed into the nation’s top-ranked recruit in the Class of 2003, signed with Iowa and won two NCAA titles for the Hawkeyes. 7 } – Vince Silva – The first walk-on to All American in Oklahoma State Univ. history
Vince Silva was a 2x All American for Oklahoma State in the late 1980’s. “When I was growing up, my wrestling hero was Lee Kemp. I don’t remember why or what made me pick him, but I remember following him religiously — his wrestling and his success. 9} – . Thom Ortiz – NCAA Finalist for Arizona State During the Bobby Douglas Era
Thom Ortiz is a former 3x All American for Arizona State. He spent nearly a decade coaching with Bobby Douglas at Iowa State before leading the Sun Devils as the head wrestling coach. Today, Coach Ortiz is heavily involved in the MMA community and was recently the focus of a documentary – El Viejo – which chronicles his return to the MMA cage. 10 } – .B.J. Futrell: My Wrestling Hero
Today’s installment of My Wrestling Hero features B.J. Futrell. The two-time All-American and past U.S. men’s freestyle National Team member shares his thoughts on his wrestling hero: Quintroy Harrell.

“My wrestling hero is Quintroy Harrell. He’s the head coach of the Harvey Twister Wrestling Club. He’s an incredible, incredible man.
