1 } – NO LOOKING BACK: PENN STATE WRESTLING COACH CAEL SANDERSON IS FOCUSED ON WHAT’S NEXT FOR HIS SPORT
Cael Sanderson’s place in the history of American wrestling is indelible: unbeaten in 159 career matches at Iowa State, four NCAA titles, four NCAA Most Outstanding Wrestler awards and a gold medal at the Olympic Games Athens 2004, not to mention the eight national championships he’s won in the last nine seasons as head coach at Penn State. But as far as Sanderson is concerned, records and resumes are relics. His focus these days is fixed on the future of wrestling, from the uncertain near term of another college season in limbo to the tenuous status of the already-rescheduled Tokyo Games to the long-term growth and survival of the sport that he’s given so much to already. “Wrestling has been a very critical part of my life. I don’t know if any sport teaches you the life lessons that wrestling teaches you.” said Sanderson, who has coached 25 national champions and 73 All-Americans in his 14 years as a college coach, including three at Iowa State. “It is my responsibility, as a former college wrestler and a former Olympian and now as a college coach, to make sure that the same opportunities are available for kids in the future.” Sanderson isn’t merely offering up some theoretical pay-it-forward platitude. He recognizes the approaching existential crossroads that wrestling faces — and that Olympic sports on all college campuses face. More than 80 Division I college programs, including the wrestling team and 10 others at Stanford alone, have been eliminated since the coronavirus pandemic shut down first the NCAA winter championships and then the entire spring sports season. … rest of story at https://www.teamusa.org/News/2020/October/27/No-Looking-Back-Penn-State-Wrestling-Coach-Cael-Sanderson-Is-Focused-On-Whats-Next-For-His-Sport?mc_cid=2e944b01db&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

4 } – Iowa’s Jaydin Eierman drops Olympic champion at Hawkeye Wrestling Club Showdown Open
2-time NCAA champion Spencer Lee dominates with a pin in first match in eight months; Pat Lugo also posts victory
CORALVILLE — Jayden Eierman’s decision to transfer to the University of Iowa wasn’t just to help the Hawkeyes win a national championship. The three-time All-American left Missouri during his Olympic redshirt season and arrived in Iowa City, in part, to prepare for post-collegiate freestyle competition. The move seemed like the right one after earning a marquee victory Sunday night. Eierman exploded for two late takedowns for a 4-1 victory over former Georgian Olympic champion Vladimer Khinchegashvili in the Hawkeye Wrestling Club Showdown Open at Xtream Arena. Iowa’s two-time NCAA champion Spencer Lee also won on the nine-match freestyle main card that was preceded by an eight-match undercard.
“It is my biggest win, but I’m not going to let that solidify who I am,” Eierman said. “I need to go out there and get one of my own. He was an Olympic champion in 2016. I’m going to have to work hard every single day up until the Olympic Trials to be to where I need to be to get my Olympic medal.” Eierman has been in Iowa City for about a year now. A Tiger can change his stripes and he’s all Hawkeye now. He shared that message with the camera for the livestream audience afterward. “I feel like I’m part of this community now,” Eierman said. “I feel like it’s going to get better and better. I have a college season coming up. I’m going to compete with the Hawkeyes. I’m going to help them compete for a national title this season.” … rest of story at https://www.thegazette.com/subject/sports/iowas-jaydin-eierman-drops-olympic-champion-at-hawkeye-wrestling-club-showdown-open-20201101?mc_cid=41fa5d2268&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

AUSTIN, Texas – Jordan Burroughs made an exciting comeback against Zahid Valencia in the main event for FloWrestling’s Burroughs vs. Valencia card on Saturday night in Austin, Texas. The two went head-to-head at a catchweight,185 pounds. Burroughs normally competes at 74 kg/163 pounds, while Valencia competes at 86 kg/189 pounds. Valencia, a 2017 Junior World silver medalist and two-time NCAA champion for Arizona State, drew first blood in the match against five-time World and Olympic champion Jordan Burroughs, with a duck under for a takedown in the first minute. Shortly after, Valencia extended his lead with another takedown for a 4-0 advantage at the break. In the second period, Burroughs began his comeback bid with an early go-behind for a takedown. Valencia tacked on a step out but that would be all the Sun Devil would score. 7 } – PORSCH PINS SENIOR NATIONAL CHAMP PEAK, KNOPICK NAMED OW AT UWW JUNIOR GRECO-ROMAN NATIONALS
OMAHA, Neb. – A number of wrestlers made a big statement with their performance at the UWW Junior Greco-Roman Nationals, none bigger than Dayton Porsch of the Beaver WC at 67 kg. Porsch, who has little national-level Greco-Roman background, nailed a headlock in the 67 kg finals and pinned 2020 Senior Nationals champion Benji Peak of the Sunkist Kids in just 48 seconds. Porsch celebrated his shocking victory in grand style. Porsch was a four-time Kansas state champion who wrestled at UNI. Peak had also competed in the U23 Greco-Roman Nationals on Friday, making the finals but deciding not to compete in that tournament finals. The Outstanding Wrestler in the tournament was 55 kg champion Conor Knopick of the MWC Wrestling Academy, who stopped Billy Sullivan of Legends of Gold Las Vegas in an entertaining and highly technical finals match, 12-5. Sullivan led 5-2, but Knopick opened up his offense to score 10 straight points. Knopick, who trains in the Omaha area under respected coach Zac Dominguez, was a member of the 2019 Cadet World Team. … rest of story at https://www.teamusa.org/USA-Wrestling/Features/2020/November/13/UWW-Junior-Greco-Roman-finals-wrap?mc_cid=870ca1d130&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
8 } – LAMONT, GRIMES, PORTER, CAFFEY AMONG BIG WINNERS IN U23 GRECO-ROMAN NATIONALS FINALS
OMAHA, Neb. – The first finals at USA Wrestling’s U23 Nationals and UWW Junior Nationals was in the U23 Greco-Roman division, where 10 champions were crowned in Friday’s first session. One of the highlight battles of the finals was in the round robin finals at 60 kg, where multiple U.S. age group World team members Taylor LaMont of the Sunkist Kids battled Randon Miranda of the New York AC at 60 kg. Miranda was hit for passivity to trail 1-0, but when he was put down, he scored a reversal to tie it at 1-1, which was the score at the break. Early in the second period, during a scramble, LaMont scored a two-point hip toss tilt to lead 3-1. The score held, as Miranda was unable to crack LaMont’s defense. NMU-OTS athlete Miranda was the defending U23 champion, … rest of story at https://www.teamusa.org/USA-Wrestling/Features/2020/November/13/U23-Greco-finals-wrap?mc_cid=870ca1d130&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
