1 } – D1 Insider: Hawkeyes hoping to see title pursuit through to the finish this year
Iowa wrestling fans who’d waited a decade to watch their team ransack its way to another NCAA championship figured they’d only need to bear nine more days. More than 10 months after the 2019-20 season was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, their wait continues. Now they have another shot, perhaps just as good. The Hawkeyes have nearly all the pieces back from a team that was rarely challenged a year ago, and coach Tom Brands isn’t going to take any of this time for granted. Neither are his wrestlers, who’ve been in their own little bubbles for weeks where Brands has seen them take virus protocols seriously since they began workouts. The virus might be this team’s biggest hurdle. The spread of COVID-19 wiped out last year’s tournament just nine days before it was to start at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. The Hawkeyes were set to send their entire lineup, complete with three No. 1 seeds into the finale. … rest of story at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1610165795337&twSessionId=wvbstjdkts&postId=945768135&mc_cid=c6c3fe425c&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
2 } – OSU wrestling: Beavers get the season started under first-year coach Chris Pendleton
Taking over as the head coach of a college program is difficult enough in normal circumstances. Doing so during a global pandemic presents a different set of challenges entirely. Such is the case for Chris Pendleton, who was hired as Oregon State’s head wrestling coach in April and arrived in Corvallis ready to provide a spark for a historically successful program that has struggled recently. But he wasn’t even able to meet his athletes until mid-summer, and the Beavers were not able to get into the wrestling room until November. “That was a unique challenge where you are off the mat for six to eight months. For some of these guys, they haven’t done that since they were five years old,” Pendleton said. “I looked at myself and was saying, ‘When was the last time I was off the mat for even two months?’” It’s been a long time coming, but the Beavers have finally reached the start of the season; … rest of story at https://www.gazettetimes.com/sports/beavers-sports/wrestling/osu-wrestling-beavers-get-the-season-started-under-first-year-coach-chris-pendleton/article_8e1e8687-61ca-5d21-ae69-6a921032cc94.html?mc_cid=c6c3fe425c&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
3 } – ‘Hungry, focused, gritty’ Northern Iowa wrestling team ready to turn heads in 2021
The Northern Iowa wrestling team took team pictures earlier this week, and Lance Runyon, a redshirt freshman, was so excited for the coming season that he tried on three different singlets. Because why not, right? “I’m super excited,” said Runyon, a 2019 state champion for Southeast Polk. “I’m ready to go, and I’m glad it’s finally here.” Northern Iowa officially begins its 2021 season this weekend, with a Sunday tri-dual against South Dakota State and North Dakota State in Brookings, S.D. It will be the Panthers’ first competition in 308 days, the last being the 2020 Big 12 Championships in March.
So Runyon’s excitement is well-taken, especially considering an injury shortened his redshirt season a year ago. He’s wrestled just five college matches. He is antsy to compete again. His enthusiasm is shared by, well, everybody else. … rest of story at https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/sports/college/northern-iowa/uni-panthers/2021/01/07/hungry-focused-gritty-northern-iowa-wrestling-team-ready-turn-heads-2021-doug-schwab-brody-teske-uni/6579232002/?mc_cid=4a4f0e7778&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

BROOKINGS, S.D. – Five different Panthers recorded pinfalls as UNI swept the South Dakota State and North Dakota State 28-13 and 27-11 respectively to open the 2021 wrestling season Sunday at Frost Arena in Brookings, S.D.
Panthers roll South Dakota State 28-13
The Panthers opened the day with a match against South Dakota State. At 125, Brody Teske appeared to be in trouble early when he fell behind to Daniel Vega 8-2, but Teske battled back to take a 10-9 lead before the end of the period. He held on to win 13-11 to put the Panthers up 3-0.

7 } – Franek Wins Twice to Highlight Bison Split Against UNI, SDSU
BROOKINGS, S.D. – No. 13-ranked Jared Franek won both of his matches at 157 pounds to help North Dakota State split a pair of Big 12 Conference wrestling duals Sunday, Jan. 10, at Frost Arena. Franek’s 4-2 decision over 20th-ranked Cade DeVos in the sudden-victory period propelled NDSU to a 21-13 victory over South Dakota State after the Bison fell 27-11 to 23rd-ranked Northern Iowa. Franek won a 5-1 decision against Cayd Lara of UNI in the earlier dual. 8 } – Iowa State trounces Loras, Nebraska-Kearney in final ‘tune-up’ duals
AMES, Ia. — Iowa State officially started its wrestling season last week, but, if we’re being honest, these first three duals were more tune-ups for the real thing that’s coming next week. One week after thumping Division III power Wartburg, the Cyclones improved to 3-0 by bullying both Loras College and Nebraska-Kearney on Sunday at Hilton Coliseum. Iowa State opened with a 40-0 win over Loras College, then followed by trouncing Nebraska-Kearney, 38-4. In all, the Cyclones, ranked ninth in Trackwrestling’s latest Division I poll, won 19 of the 20 contested matches on Sunday. They scored three major decisions, two technical falls and a pin to blank Division III Loras, then rolled up three more pins to soundly beat Nebraska-Kearney, one of Division II’s top teams. … rest of story at https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/sports/college/iowa-state/wrestling/2021/01/10/wrestling-iowa-state-trounces-loras-nebraska-kearney-cyclones-hilton-coliseum-kevin-dresser-isu-ames/6615275002/?mc_cid=ee9459dd97&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
9} – Northern Iowa begins 2021 season with wins over South Dakota State and North Dakota State
There was a lot of unknown about the Northern Iowa wrestling team entering the 2021 season, but if this weekend’s results were any indication, these next few months could be pretty fun in Cedar Falls. The Panthers registered two dual victories on Sunday, topping both South Dakota State and North Dakota State in a tri-meet in Brookings, S.D. Northern Iowa opened with a 28-13 win over the host Jackrabbits, then closed with a 27-11 win over the Bison. In the first opportunity for the new-look Panthers to showcase their abilities, … rest of story at https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/sports/college/northern-iowa/uni-panthers/2021/01/10/wrestling-northern-iowa-begins-2021-season-wins-over-sdsu-ndsu/6615277002/?mc_cid=ee9459dd97&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
Laras bring brotherhood to UNI wrestling
CEDAR FALLS — Brothers Triston and Cayd Lara have leaned heavily on each other for physical and emotional support for as long as they both can remember. There’s always a certain bond among siblings, but the Laras treat family like oxygen. That unconditional connection was instilled at an early age within both the Dodger wrestling program and the Fort Dodge community. It’s a kinship they’ve continued to cultivate under head coach Doug Schwab at the University of Northern Iowa.
“Wrestling alongside Cayd is a dream come true,” … rest of story at https://www.messengernews.net/sports/local-sports/2021/01/laras-bring-brotherhood-to-uni-wrestling/?mc_cid=c6c3fe425c&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
10 } – College wrestling: Cyclone freshmen show promise in dual wins
AMES — Iowa State wrestling’s freshmen haven’t looked like freshmen early in the season. On Sunday in Hilton Coliseum, Iowa State’s freshmen shined as the Cyclones beat Loras and Nebraska-Kearney 40-0 and 38-4, respectively. True freshmen Kysen Terukina (125), Zach Redding (133), Cam Robinson (149) and Yonger Bastida (197) all won both of their matches. Terukina, Redding and Robinson all won their second match of the day against Nebraska-Kearney thanks to some late-match heroics. Terukina and Robinson both got takedowns in the third period to win 6-4 and 9-7, respectively. Redding won in sudden victory, 7-5. “It was special to see them win late,” heavyweight Gannon Gremmel said. … rest of story at https://wcfcourier.com/sports/college/isu/college-wrestling-cyclone-freshmen-show-promise-in-dual-wins/article_d17af059-fb74-5a37-b6d7-38f80b824925.html?mc_cid=01186bea70&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

12 } – OSU Wrestling: Five Thoughts on Oregon State, UT Chattanooga Duals
OSU won big in its first two duals inside GIA
The Cowboys had their first duals in Gallagher-Iba on Sunday and knocked off Chattanooga 32-9 then Oregon State 29-8. Here are my five thoughts on the performance.
1. Freshmen off to a good start
If you’ve been following my writing on here for a while you’ve seen how much I’ve raved about the 2020 recruiting class the Cowboys brought in. Possibly John Smith’s best ever. And they’re performing well so far. OSU started three of them. At 125 with Trevor Mastrogiovanni, 174 with Dustin Plott, and 197 with AJ Ferrari. The group went 6-0 and Plott and Ferrari scored bonus points in each of their matches. … rest of story at https://pistolsfiringblog.com/osu-wrestling-five-thoughts-on-oregon-state-ut-chattanooga-duals/?mc_cid=01186bea70&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
