3 } – Brands: Hawkeyes need to reach the finish line
IOWA CITY — Tom Brands has his eyes on the finish line. The coach of Iowa’s top-ranked wrestling team welcomes the return of nine All-Americans from a team that beat everything other than a global pandemic last season, a situation that dashed the Hawkeyes’ hopes of a first NCAA team championship since 2010 when the tournament was canceled. But in a season already delayed because of the coronavirus, Brands emphatically said at Iowa’s preseason media day Tuesday that the sport and its athletes need to crown NCAA champions and compete in the Olympics this year. “Really, we have to get to the end. We have to get to the national tournament. Are you listening NCAA? Are you listening? These are young people that aspire to things. They are in an age demographic that is not as risky,” Brands said. “… We have to get to the end of this year. Then we have to get to Tokyo. I’m passionate about that. … rest of story at https://qctimes.com/sports/college/wrestling/brands-hawkeyes-need-to-reach-the-finish-line/article_93d2224d-bda0-51d4-88dd-48bfc64427ef.html?mc_cid=afb669e366&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

4 } – D1 Insider: Optimism before the pause for Penn State
With his team’s wrestling facility inaccessible this summer due to COVID-19 restrictions, Penn State’s Aaron Brooks had to find new training grounds. So he worked from home, tossing roommates around in the front yard. The evidence of their skirmishes, bouts won and lost under a mild State College sun, still remains. “There’s like a circle patch that’s missing, with dead grass just from us wrestling,” Brooks said earlier this week. The ground in State College is partially snow-covered now, and the Nittany Lions’ season, which officially began with the team’s media day on Tuesday, is suddenly on ice. Penn State released a statement on Wednesday announcing it has paused team activities due to positive COVID-19 results among team personnel. Per Big Ten policy, those who’ve tested positive will begin an isolation period while contact tracing is underway to determine other individuals who must quarantine. Nittany Lion coach Cael Sanderson knew this was possible. … rest of story at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1610684398740&twSessionId=hkjihsekkd&postId=965275135&mc_cid=985ebae38c&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

5 } – Edinboro, Bloomsburg Set To Return To Competition
CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Mid-American Conference announced today that the Edinboro University and Bloomsburg University wrestling programs will return to competition this spring. The three MAC affiliate programs had previously opted out of competition due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Edinboro will hold the annual Black and Red Intersquad scrimmage Jan. 23 in McComb Fieldhouse. Fans will not be permitted to attend due to ongoing COVID-19 protocol concerns. Head Coach Matt Hill and the Fighting Scots will begin the season visiting Gannon and Mercyhurst in a round-robin event Jan. 27.
Bloomsburg will get underway on Wednesday, February 3, when the program will conduct its wrestle-offs at 6:00 p.m. inside the Nelson Field House. Due to COVID-19 protocols, fans will not be permitted for the event. On the Huskies’ docket, currently, are trips to Hofstra University on Saturday, February 6, and to Rider University on Thursday, February 11. … rest of story at https://getsomemaction.com/news/2021/1/15/wrestling-edinboro-bloomsburg-set-to-return-to-competition.aspx?mc_cid=9a695e9aca&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

6 } – Northern Colorado enters Coaches Poll for the first time in decades
Northern Colorado enters NWCA Division I Coaches Poll for first time in 51 years
Manheim, Pennsylvania – It’s been 18,934 days since the Bears of the University of Northern Colorado were ranked in the NWCA Division I Wrestling Coaches Poll. After opening up their season with a victory on the road against Wyoming, coach Troy Nickerson’s squad entered at No. 25 in the latest Top 25, released Tuesday. The school was known as Colorado State College the last time it appeared in the rankings and for decades, the Greeley, Colorado school was the flag-bearer for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference wrestling scene. The 1968-69 team finished the regular season ranked No. 6, which was the last time the school spent time in the rankings. With a moderate portion of Division I wrestling squads taking the mats for the first time last weekend, there was minimal movement in the poll as just 14 duals were contested. Missouri (3-0) moved into the top 10 after sweeping South Dakota State, Oregon State and North Dakota State in Fargo.
No. 4 NC State (1-0) blanked Gardner-Webb 42-0 in a matchup of North Carolina schools, while No. 8 Virginia Tech (1-0) stopped Campbell 28-6 in Blacksburg. … rest of story at http://www.nwcaonline.com/northern-colorado-enters-coaches-poll-for-the-first-time-in-decades/?mc_cid=afb669e366&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

11 } – Could we see a 5-time NCAA champ? Plus, extra matches, Jacob Warner, Iowa’s lineup battle at 184
For the first time in more than 300 days, all three of Iowa’s Division I programs are scheduled to wrestle this weekend. That’s exciting!
The top-ranked Hawkeyes return with their home opener Friday night against a very game Nebraska team, ranked sixth in Trackwrestling’s latest Division I poll. All 10 Husker starters are ranked, and four are considered top-10 guys. Both No. 9 Iowa State and Northern Iowa will be at Hilton Coliseum on Sunday afternoon wrestling against No. 10 Arizona State and No. 15 Missouri. These duals are intriguing tests for different reasons, but we’ll finally see where the Cyclones and Panthers both stack up against tougher opponents. I really don’t have anything important to say here at the top other than the fact that it’s been too long since we’ve this kind of weekend. … rest of story at https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/sports/college/iowa/wrestling/2021/01/12/wrestling-mailbag-5-time-ncaa-champion-eligibility-extra-matches-jacob-warner-iowa-lineup-battle/6634696002/?mc_cid=7d0bae3ce9&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Like every college sports team this winter, the Lehigh Wrestling program is changing plans constantly and is ready for anything. The Mountain Hawks released their 2020-21 season schedule last week and is ready to begin battling. For Lehigh that season slate was the second version, after the first version needed to be altered earlier this off-season. The team is not allowed air travel or overnight stays this season to help avoid the spread of COVID-19. Those new restrictions forced head coach Pat Santaro to adjust the schedule. The Mountain Hawks will be home for a good portion of the season, however, local fans will not see a Penn State – Lehigh showdown this winter. … rest of story at https://www.wfmz.com/sports/mountain-hawks-shifting-prepping-for-anything/article_cb4df670-44b7-11eb-a781-d751db53e6f1.html?mc_cid=f9e49e1788&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
