NCAA Division I Results (2021) – #1

TDR Editor’s Notes ; A variety of dual match results from the ACC (#1), Mid-American (#2), Big Ten (#3, 7 & 10), EIWA (#5 & 6), and the Big 12 (#9 & 11). conferences. At the end we have a story about Oklahoma State coach’s latest wins. He has moved up the list of dual meet wins by coaches to 3rd among Division I All-Time. His recent wins took him past retired coaches J. Robinson (Minnesota), Bobby Douglas (Iowa State & Arizona State) and Gary Taylor (Rider). WIth 443 wins he trails Hall of Fame legendary coaches Harold Nichols of Iowa State with 493 wins and Dale Thomas of Oregon State at the top with 616 wins. Smith ranks 2nd among all active coaches behind Pat Pecora of Pittsburgh-Johnstown (Division II) with 618 wins. Pecora became the new All-Time leader at the end of last season. 1 } – PANTHERS OPEN ACC SEASON WITH 31-12 VICTORY OVER DUKE
PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh wrestling team earned another decisive home win and opened the 2021 ACC wrestling season with a 31-12 victory over Duke on Saturday at the Fitzgerald Filed House.
The Panthers, ranked No. 12 by the NWCA Coaches Poll this week, beat No. 17 Lehigh 24-9 last Saturday at home and once again pulled away, this time beating Duke by a double-digit margin. 2 } – Wrestling Dominates Clarion, 30-9
Broncs win eight of 10 duals to cruise to victory
CLARION, PA – The Rider University wrestling team won 8-of-10 matches Saturday to dominate Mid-American Conference (MAC) foe Clarion, 30-9, Saturday afternoon at Tippin Gym. With the win, the Broncs even their record at 1-1 (1-0 MAC), while the Golden Eagles are now 0-2 (0-1 MAC). The Broncs jumped out to a 7-0 lead with a major decision from freshman Tyler Klinsky (Middletown, NJ/Middletown North) in his dual debut at 125 and a decision from Richie Koehler (Middletown, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) at 133. 3 } – Gophers Sweep Tri-Meet at Michigan State
Eight of 10 Gopher Wrestlers finished 2-0 on the day.
EAST LANSING, Mich. – In its first conference tri-meet since 1996, the 14th-ranked Gopher wrestling team (2-1) defeated Maryland (0-3) and host Michigan State (1-1) on Saturday afternoon. Minnesota routed the Terrapins with a 48-0 win and defeated the No. 17 Spartans, 28-6, in the finale.  Eight of the 10 Gophers finished the day with two victories led by sophomore Patrick McKee. 4 } – Wrestling sweeps Ohio, VMI
LEXINGTON, VA. – Campbell swept a Saturday tri-meet in Lexington, Va., topping Ohio and VMI. The Camels (2-1) defeated Ohio (1-4) 34-6, then shut out VMI (1-2) in their first Southern Conference dual of the 2020-21 season. The shutout was Campbell’s first since defeating Presbyterian 55-0 last season (January 25, 2020). The win over Ohio marked the first dual victory for first year Campbell head coach Scotti Sentes. Ohio also defeated VMI 21-18 to start the day. 5 } – Mids Rout #18 Lehigh, Earn First Win in the Series Since 2011
After dropping its first two matches of the evening by a combined three points, the Navy wrestling team (2-1, 1-0 EIWA) went on to win seven of the final eight bouts to secure a 21-9 victory over 18th-ranked Lehigh (0-2, 0-1 EIWA) Saturday evening at Alumni Hall. It marked the first win by the Midshipmen over the reigning EIWA champions since edging Lehigh 19-15 in Annapolis on Jan. 15, 2011. 6 } – Army Commands 30-18 Victory Over Hofstra
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point wrestling team welcomed conference opponent Hofstra University to Gillis Field House on Sunday afternoon for their second dual matchup of the year. Army commanded another dominant victory on home turf, moving past the Pride 30-18.  The Black Knights had an early 6-0 advantage right from the beginning as the Pride had to take a forfeit at 125lbs. Hofstra returned the favor at 133lbs to tie the match 6-6 after Garret Lambert secured a fall at 2:52 over Mark Montgomery.  Army used the loss as momentum, notching victories in the next two bouts. Logan Brown wrestled his way to a powerful 13-4 major decision victory to increase the Black Knight’s lead.  P.J. 7 } – Illini Notch a Pair of Wins in Tri-Meet with No. 8 Ohio State, No. 22 Wisconsin
CHAMPAIGN, Ill – Illinois picked up two ranked wins in Sunday’s tri-meet at State Farm Center, defeating No. 8 Ohio State, 18-15, and No. 22 Wisconsin, 21-9. Several key match wins helped the Illini secure both victories, including two-win days for multiple Illini wrestlers. 8 } – Wrestling Pitches Pair of SoCon Shutouts
BOONE, N.C. — A year after leading Division I wrestling with four shutouts, App State added two more as it opened its Southern Conference schedule against Bellarmine and Davidson on Sunday in Varsity Gym.  
Unofficially ranked 29th in last week’s NWCA Coaches Poll, the Mountaineers (2-1) won 45-0 against Bellarmine, a Division I newcomer, before posting a 38-0 victory against Davidson. 9} – JACKRABBITS STREAK PAST AIR FORCE
U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Colten Carlson’s pin at 165 pounds capped a momentum-changing four-match winning streak for South Dakota State and lifted the Jackrabbits to a 24-14 victory over Air Force in a Big 12 Conference wrestling dual Sunday afternoon. With the victory, SDSU improved to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in conference duals. Air Force was wrestling for the first time this season. The Jackrabbits trailed 7-0 through two matches as Tanner Jordan dropped a 6-3 decision at 125 pounds and 13th-ranked Zach Price suffered a 14-4 loss by major decision to Jared Van Vleet. Clay Carlson, ranked 22nd at 141 pounds, got the Jackrabbits headed in the right direction with an 18-6 major decision over Lenny Petersen. Hunter Marko and 18th-ranked Cade DeVos followed with decisions at 149 and 157 pounds, respectively, giving SDSU the lead for good at 10-9 at the halfway mark of the dual. 10 } – Massa, Parris Earn Pins in Wolverine Rout Against Indiana
» No. 3 Michigan won eight of 10 matches, earning bonus points in three, to claim a 32-6 dual win against Indiana in its home opener at Cliff Keen Arena.
» Logan Massa and Mason Parris earned falls at 174 pounds and heavyweight, respectively, for their third bonus wins in as many matches this season.
» Dylan Ragusin used a first-period takedown and 1:22 riding-time advantage to edge 14th-ranked Brock Hudkins, 6-4, for his second win over a ranked opponent.

11 } – Wrestling: Iowa State, Northern Iowa both lose to Missouri at Hilton Coliseum
AMES, Ia. — The Iowa State and Northern Iowa wrestling teams both looked ahead to Sunday’s triangular against No. 15 Missouri, but for different reasons. For the eighth-ranked Cyclones, it was an opportunity to see if they were really top-10 material after beating up on Division II and III programs to start the season. For the Panthers, it was a chance to see how close they were to some of the best teams in the country after two exciting wins over North Dakota State and South Dakota State last week. Turns out, both teams have some work to do after the Tigers registered two decisive victories on Sunday afternoon at Hilton Coliseum. 12 } – John Smith Moves into Third on All-Time Wins List with Undefeated Day
LITTLE ROCK, ARK. – Oklahoma State wrestling coach John Smith moved past Gary Taylor and into third place on the all-time Division 1 coaching wins list with two victories Sunday in the Cowboys’ road trip to Little Rock. OSU started the day with a dominating 38-0 victory over SIU-Edwardsville. The shutout marked the first time the Cowboys have held an opponent scoreless since Feb. 8, 2019 against Air Force. It is also the highest-scoring dual for the Pokes since the same 39-0 defeat of the Falcons.
