TDR Editor’s Notes ; The following are results from matches involving Division II teams which started their seasons this month. Most of the teams are in the north and midwest. They are preparing for their National tournament in March in Birmingham, Alabama. Also, on the blog home page are links to three pages of Coaches and Team DualMeet Wins Lists. 1 } – U.W. Parkside Wrestling Falls in First NSIC Road Dual at Northern State
Northern State 20, #22 Parkside 12
Parkside wrestling made its first road trip of the season all the way to Aberdeen, S.D., but the host Wolves took the match to drop the No. 22 ranked Rangers to 0-2 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Parkside made a late run, but ultimately the Wolves winning four straight matches in the early going was the difference. No. 4 Joe Arroyo improved to 2-0 this season with a 5-1 decision to open the night, but NSU won the next four matches, two of which finished as major decisions to make it a 14-3 match. 2 } – Upper Iowa Dominant at MSU Moorhead in NSIC Road Battle
Upper Iowa’s wrestling team made a clear statement on Thursday night as the No. 20 Peacocks (1-1) dominated a Northern Sun Conference dual with the No. 25 Dragons of Minnesota State University Moorhead (0-2). 3 } – #12 Minnesota State Prevails over Augustana 25-13
Mankato, Minn. — 12th-rated Minnesota State won seven of ten matches enroute to a 25-13 victory in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference wrestling action in Mankato. Rated tenth in the nation at 125, senior Trenton McManus upped his record on the year to 2-0 to start the match with a 14-6 major decision win over John Babineau to get things rolling. Minnesota State junior Kolbe O’Brien decisioned Jack Huffman at 141 by a 7-3 margin before two-time All-American Kyle Rathman earned a 7-5 win over tenth-rated Hunter Burnett at 149 to give the Mavericks a 10-3 lead. Junior Cooper Siebrecht rolled to a 3-2 victory over Tyler Wagener in the 157 matchup to make it 13-3 lead. 4 } – #16 Mines Dominates #12 Fort Hays St. In Opener
GOLDEN, Colo. – #16 Colorado School of Mines began its wrestling season with a dominating 31-6 win over #12 Fort Hays State on Thursday. The Orediggers (1-0) won eight bouts including falls by Noah Ottum at 149 pounds and #8 Skyler Lykins at 165.
The match began at 125 with Jake Stogdill defeating Broderick Green 7-3, and freshman Gabe Martinez impressed as he nearly pulled off the upset at 133 against #2 Mason Turner, taking him to sudden victory in an 8-6 loss. Mines then reeled off four straight wins beginning with Wes Rayburn’s defensive 2-0 decision against Rhett Edmonson at 141, and Ottum pinned Josh Lenker in 1:39 at 149. 5 } – Mavs rally for 32-13 RMAC-opening win over No. 10 Grizzlies
Mavs win final six bouts, three by pin
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University Mavericks won the final six bouts, including each of the final three with pins, as they recorded a come-from-behind 32-13 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference men’s wrestling dual over visiting and tenth-ranked Adams State University, Saturday here in Brownson Arena. The dual lifted the lid on the conference portion of the season for both teams.
The Mavericks have now won three straight are now 3-2 overall while the Grizzlies suffered their first loss of the young season to fall to 2-1 overall. 6 } – UNK Flys By the Eagles, 43-3
Kearney, Neb. – The second-ranked Nebraska-Kearney wrestling team had seven bonus point wins to dominate Chadron State, 43-3, Saturday afternoon in Cushing Coliseum.
Including some “B” team duals, UNK is now 4-3 while this was the season-opener for the Eagles.
Top-ranked Josh Portillo (Clarion, Ia.) got things started off on the right foot has he racked up six first period points as part of a 16-3 major decision. Lincoln senior Wesley Dawkins and Kearney redshirt freshman Nick James followed with falls with fifth-ranked and senior Sam Turner (Colorado Springs) tallying three points in the final period to win 5-3. Finally, redshirt junior Austin Eldredge had a 16-0 tech fall in only 2:15 with Kearney redshirt sophomore Lee Herrington recording a fall at 6:59. 7 } – Another Sweep for No. 5 WLU Wrestling Team
FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The No. 5-ranked West Liberty University wrestling team remained unbeaten on the young season here Saturday, pulling off another triangular sweep in a Mountain East Conference event hosted by Fairmont State University.
Coach Danny Irwin‘s short-handed Hilltoppers (4-0) defeated Glenville State, 33-21, and followed that up with a 25-18 nod over the host Falcons. Fairmont State edged Glenville, 22-21, in the first match of the day.
Already giving up forfeits at 184 and 197 due to NCAA and MEC guidelines and protocols, the hill got a little steeper for West Liberty in the opener against Glenville State when 2-time All-American Cole Laya got an unlucky break. Carrying a huge lead into the waning seconds of his 125-pound match against the Pioneers’ Kevin Meloni, Laya made one last push for a fall with disastrous consequences. 8 } – No. 12 Fort Hays State Dominates Emmanuel College, 41-6
WICHITA, Kan. – The 12th-ranked Fort Hays State wrestling team picked up its first win of the season in convincing fashion Sunday (Jan. 17) during the Jet Duals, besting Emmanuel College 41-6. Fort Hays State won nine of the 10 matchups, including six bonus-point wins. The Tigers are now 1-3 on the year, while the Lions dip to 0-8 this season. Wrestling in a dual for the first time in his collegiate career, Rhett Koppes got the Tigers going with a 6-2 decision at 125 pounds. Second-ranked Mason Turner followed with a first-period pin, his second pin of the season.
Rhett Edmonson picked up his first collegiate win at 141 pounds with a 7-2 decision. 9} – No. 3 UCO Plasters No. 23 Jets
WICHITA, Kan. (Jan. 17) – Nate Keim scored a third-period technical fall to highlight another dominating Central Oklahoma performance on the mat Sunday morning as the No. 3-ranked Bronchos hammered No. 23 Newman 40-5. UCO also earned five major decisions, two forfeits and one regular decision in beginning defense of its Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association crown and held a 20-1 takedown advantage in moving to 3-0 on the young season. 10 } – #11 Greyhounds move to 4-0 with Saturday dual wins
INDIANAPOLIS- The #11 Greyhound wrestling team moved to 4-0 on the young season with a pair of Super Region 3 dual wins Saturday in the Ruth Lilly Fitness Center. UIndy opened its 2-0 day with a 25-10 win over #T17 Findlay, before defeating #8 Tiffin 26-18. No. 7 Breyden Bailey (2-0), Logan Bailey (4-0), #5 Jack Eiteljorge (4-0), #10 Andrew Sams (2-0) and #10 Gleason Mappes (2-0) all went 2-0 on the day to boost the Hounds to the two home victories.

After the Roughnecks took the first bout of the dual, Gavin Ritter (3-1) tied the match at 3-3 with a 4-3 decision over Derek Sharp at 133. The Bailey brothers pushed the Greyhounds to a lead they would never give up with back-to-back bonus point wins at 141 and 149, with #7 Breyden Bailey making his Greyhound debut with a pin in 4:16 of Findlay’s Dakota Blanton. 11 } – Tiger Wrestling Picks Up First Win of 2021
Ouachita Baptist wrestling earned victories at eight weights Wednesday night in a 39-9 victory over Kentucky Wesleyan at Christian Brothers High School in Memphis, Tennessee. Sophomore Johnny Green’s 59-second pin put the finishing touches on the Tigers’ first win of the season. Freshman Evan Kennedy got Ouachita on the board with a narrow 11-10 victory at 133 over KWC’s Andrew Parker. Kennedy scored the last five points of the bout, using two takedowns and an escape to erase a four-point deficit. At 149, freshman Jaylon Otero won by major decision over the Panthers’ Trevor South, racking up three takedowns in a 12-0 match. 12 } – No.5 McKendree Men’s Wrestling Takes Dual Over Central Missouri, 48-3
(LEBANON, Ill. – Jan. 20) – The No.5 McKendree University men’s wrestling team improved to 3-1 overall after defeating University of Central Missouri, Wednesday evening. The Bearcats dominated a majority of the weight classes for a final score of 48-3. Zeke came back in the second match of the night to get McKendree back even with Central Missouri. Back-to-back pin victories in the 184-lb and 197-lb classes sparked the Bearcats and put them in a comfortable position ahead of the Mules. From there, the Bearcats ran with the lead, and finished with a score of 48-3.
