1 } – The college wrestling weekend is loaded with meaningful matches, and we preview them here
Most of the top ten teams in the country will strap on their headgear and take to the mats this week, and three of those top teams hail from the same conference. No. 1 Iowa, No. 7 Nebraska and No. 10 Illinois will headline this weekend of college wrestling, with all three expected to walk away with dominant wins, but there’s far more intrigue than the rankings might suggest. How do the lineups of these teams look four weeks into an unusual, COVID-shortened season? How are these teams managing illness and injury? Is it too early to start predicting NCAA All-Americans? The first few weeks of the season have shown that anything can happen, and here are some more of the biggest questions heading into this particular weekend that have championship implications.
1. Will Iowa run through Minnesota like the Hawks did against Nebraska? … rest of story at https://www.ncaa.com/news/wrestling/article/2021-01-22/college-wrestling-weekend-loaded-meaningful-matches-and-we-preview-them-here?mc_cid=63515b3c44&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

4 } – State of the Marauders: Wrestling using opportunities to diagnose, design, and improve
MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – In such unprecedented times, the Millersville wrestling team is utilizing everything at its disposal to improve. Hours that would usually be spent on managing weight or preparing for upcoming matches has instead been used to work on fine-tuning and diagnosing areas of need that should pay off in the long run. “We were able to kind of individualize some training and really dive into different situations and dissect them like scientists,” said head coach Kerry Regner. “You don’t always do that because usually from September through March you’re focused on training. A lot of times there’s no sense of urgency to stop and say “Hey, let’s go over this.” So that’s what we’re doing this fall.”  “I think something that the coaching staff does well here is we individualize the athletes’ strengths and weaknesses.  … rest of story at https://millersvilleathletics.com/news/2020/12/8/state-of-the-marauders-wrestling-using-opportunities-to-diagnose-design-and-improve.aspx?mc_cid=372ecbefe1&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

5 } – Bellarmine Wrestling adopts families in need for Christmas
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — In a year with so many people being unemployed and many families struggling to make ends meet, the holidays can be a challenging time.  So this holiday season, the Bellarmine Knights wrestling team wanted to give back to the community once again by adopting a family for Christmas. The team thought it would be an excellent way to spread some cheer in a year tarnished so severely by COVID-19.  The Knights reached deep into their own pockets and raised an unprecedented amount of nearly $600, which was enough money to not only adopt one family but two this year. Both families that were chosen are facing extreme hardships, even beyond those that most have in a pandemic year. The first family chosen was that of a young man, who lost his father several years ago, and is currently being raised by a step grandfather who is presently dealing with many serious health issues of his own. The team also adopted a young girl, who is battling leukemia, and her siblings. … rest of story at https://athletics.bellarmine.edu/news/2020/12/22/wrestling-adopts-families-in-need-for-christmas.aspx?mc_cid=f9e49e1788&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

6 } – Cael Carlson: Family and Farming
While wrestling has been an instrumental part of Cael Carlson’s family over the years, there is still one thing that runs deeper in the Carlson blood: the family farm.  About two hours west of the Twin Cities is where you will find the Carlson dairy farm in Pennock, Minnesota, a farm that consists of over 1800 Holstein dairy cows and was founded by Cael’s great, great grandfather in 1891. Since then, the farm has been maintained by Cael’s grandfather, who wrestled in high school, as well as his dad and uncle, Chad and Carl, who combined for three Minnesota state titles and both competed for the Gophers in the 1990s.  Now, Cael, who has two state titles in his own right for Willmar High School, has every intention of following in his family’s footsteps and becoming a fifth-generation dairy farmer. Before that, he hopes to build on an impressive debut as a true freshman in 2019-20. … rest of story at https://gophersports.com/news/2020/12/22/wrestling-cael-carlson-family-and-farming.aspx?mc_cid=f9e49e1788&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

7 } – Kent State looks to bounce back from 2020 disappoinment
The Kent State wrestling team is eager to get back to action and prove it is better than last year’s 6-12 record.  The Flashes finished ninth out of 15 teams at the MAC Championships, and its season was stopped in March due to COVID-19, less than a month before the NCAA Championships were set to occur.  “Our dudes are just hungry to get back to competition on the mats,” coach Jim Andrassy said. “Our number one goal is to just finish the season.” … rest of story at http://www.kentwired.com/sports/article_bb092e7c-3da2-11eb-aca1-f75448c36403.html?mc_cid=1d3b41c6e1&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

12 } – Five D1 weekend performances that grabbed our attention
The third weekend of the Division I wrestling season provided us with our first look at two of the Big Ten’s power programs, a couple more tests for Missouri and nearly 650 match results to process.  Top-ranked Iowa hammered Nebraska 31-6 on Friday in Iowa City, but Ohio State wasn’t as fortunate in its opener against what appears to be a much-improved Illinois squad.  Missouri picked up its seventh dual win last year on Jan. 17 when the Tigers defeated Central Michigan to improve to 7-5.  Missouri picked up its seventh dual win of the season on Sunday — Jan. 17 — when the Tigers hammered Northern Iowa (34-6) and Iowa State (31-7) to run their record to 7-0. … rest of story at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1611033081025&twSessionId=wdilhucopl&postId=974227135&mc_cid=ad63827ef7&mc_eid=%5B2ef7cbca4b%5D
