Division III cancels 2021 winter championships
ADMINISTRATIVE COMMITTEE MAKES DECISION BASED ON WINTER DECLARATION SHOWING LOW PARTICIPATION NUMBERS
By Jeremy Villanueva
Due to low participation numbers among member schools, NCAA Division III winter championships are canceled for the 2020-21 academic year.
The Division III Administrative Committee, acting on behalf of the Division III Management and Presidents Council, approved the recommendation from the Division III Championships Committee to cancel all winter championships. The committee has been closely monitoring and discussing the membership’s winter sport participation for several months, and it has been providing updates to the councils.
The Championships Committee decision was based on the results of a winter declaration form distributed to members about their intention to compete this season in a capacity that would permit them to meet the minimum contest requirements to be eligible for championship selection by the established selection dates. The declaration form was sent to Division III athletics directors Jan. 19 and completed by 98% of the membership.
The national championships affected are men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, men’s and women’s ice hockey, and wrestling.
During its review of the declaration data, the Championships Committee determined participation numbers in all nine winter sports are well below the established threshold to provide a national championships experience. These established thresholds are 60% for men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, and men’s and women’s indoor track and field, and 70% for men’s and women’s ice hockey and wrestling. … rest of the story and statistics at https://portal.nwcaonline.com/articles/NWCA_News/Division-III-cancels-2021-winter-4-2-2021

The Binghamton University wrestling team continued to build strong momentum to start the season, taking down No. 22 Army 23-10 Saturday afternoon in West Point. I need to come up with more adjectives because the only one that comes to my mind is just how incredible that was. I am so proud of our guys. There were four matches listed as “toss ups” and we were able to win all of them. Those added with Day’s upset, leads to the final score you see.”

5 } – LAYOFF IS OVER, WHAT’S NEXT?
By DARREN MILLER hawkeyesports.com
IOWA CITY, Iowa — What’s a layoff?
Head coach Tom Brands opened his postmatch news conference Jan. 15 with the rhetorical question after his University of Iowa wrestling team picked up where it left off 45 weeks ago. Last March, the Hawkeyes won their 36th Big Ten championship in Piscataway, New Jersey, a few days before the sporting world came to a halt because of the coronavirus pandemic.
On Jan. 15, top-ranked Iowa won another Big Ten dual with a dominant display in front of a handful of parents and a few cardboard cutouts, dismantling No. 6 Nebraska, 31-6. The Hawkeyes won the first six bouts — three with bonus points — and owned an insurmountable 24-0 lead before the Huskers got on the board. Making the 25-point dual win more impressive is that Nebraska finished second at the 2020 Big Ten Tournament. “I know they responded well to a long, long layoff,” Brands said. “But really, what’s a layoff? There is no layoff, these guys are all serious about the sport so that question has been answered. We can get better, we have to keep getting better.” … rest of story at https://hawkeyesports.com/news/2021/01/18/layoff-is-over-whats-next/?mc_cid=0d6ab523a2&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Illinois also beat then-No. 21 Wisconsin 21-9. It’s the first time since February of 2017 the Illini have been ranked in the top 10.
Top-ranked Iowa opened up its season with a 31-3 win at home against then-No. 6 Nebraska.
Michigan picked up a 32-6 win over Indiana and improved to 3-0. The Wolverines moved into a second-place tie with Penn State (0-0). It’s also of note historically – the last time Michigan was ranked second was February 21, 2006. Missouri’s fast start continued as they hit the road to Iowa and took home two convincing wins, beating then-No. 10 Iowa State 31-7 and then-No. 20 Northern Iowa 34-9.
