He opened the weekend with a 12-10 sudden victory over Missouri’s Connor Brown (No. 24). Brown took an early lead, but Teske scrapped hard throughout and earned a takedown with under 10 seconds left in the third period to force sudden-victory. Early in the overtime period, Brown attempted a single-leg, but a scramble ensued and with just 15 seconds left in SV1, he executed a Granby roll and cleared his head to earn the takedown and the 12-10 win. … rest of story at https://unipanthers.com/news/2021/1/19/wrestling-teske-named-big-12-wrestler-of-the-week.aspx?mc_cid=0d6ab523a2&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

5 } – LAYOFF IS OVER, WHAT’S NEXT?
By DARREN MILLER hawkeyesports.com
IOWA CITY, Iowa — What’s a layoff?
Head coach Tom Brands opened his postmatch news conference Jan. 15 with the rhetorical question after his University of Iowa wrestling team picked up where it left off 45 weeks ago. Last March, the Hawkeyes won their 36th Big Ten championship in Piscataway, New Jersey, a few days before the sporting world came to a halt because of the coronavirus pandemic.
On Jan. 15, top-ranked Iowa won another Big Ten dual with a dominant display in front of a handful of parents and a few cardboard cutouts, dismantling No. 6 Nebraska, 31-6. The Hawkeyes won the first six bouts — three with bonus points — and owned an insurmountable 24-0 lead before the Huskers got on the board. Making the 25-point dual win more impressive is that Nebraska finished second at the 2020 Big Ten Tournament. “I know they responded well to a long, long layoff,” Brands said. “But really, what’s a layoff? There is no layoff, these guys are all serious about the sport so that question has been answered. We can get better, we have to keep getting better.” … rest of story at https://hawkeyesports.com/news/2021/01/18/layoff-is-over-whats-next/?mc_cid=0d6ab523a2&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

6 } – Illinois makes giant jump into Top 10 after a pair of weekend wins
Manheim, Pennsylvania – After entering the Top 25 last week, Illinois made waves immediately after earning a pair of ranked wins over the weekend, including an 18-15 win over then-No. 7 Ohio State, to vault the Illini into the Top 10 in the NWCA Division I Wrestling Coaches Poll released on Tuesday. Illinois also beat then-No. 21 Wisconsin 21-9. It’s the first time since February of 2017 the Illini have been ranked in the top 10.
Top-ranked Iowa opened up its season with a 31-3 win at home against then-No. 6 Nebraska.
Michigan picked up a 32-6 win over Indiana and improved to 3-0. The Wolverines moved into a second-place tie with Penn State (0-0). It’s also of note historically – the last time Michigan was ranked second was February 21, 2006. Missouri’s fast start continued as they hit the road to Iowa and took home two convincing wins, beating then-No. 10 Iowa State 31-7 and then-No. 20 Northern Iowa 34-9. The Tigers improved to 7-0. … rest of story at http://www.nwcaonline.com/illinois-makes-giant-jump-into-top-10-after-a-pair-of-weekend-wins/?mc_cid=0d6ab523a2&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

7 } – WRESTLING: BUCKEYES BEGIN UNUSUAL JOURNEY TRAVELED BY FEW OTHERS
Ohio State’s football team battled with a season lost then recovered, positive COVID tests and canceled games. Now, Tom Ryan and his wrestling team look ahead to how they will navigate their own season over the course of spring semester. The challenges of playing a season in the midst of a pandemic have not ceased with the turn of the calendar year — nearly a year removed from when COVID-19 initially disrupted the 2019-20 wrestling season. Aware of the challenges faced by sports that have played before his own, Ryan and his team are thankful to have the opportunity to compete.  “Right now, I think this team is in a very grateful place,” Ryan said Friday. “Gratitude is moving throughout the program. We’re super grateful we’re going to get to wrestle this year in the midst of a pandemic, so we’re taking it one day at a time.” … rest of story at https://www.thelantern.com/2021/01/wrestling-buckeyes-begin-unusual-journey-traveled-by-few-others/?mc_cid=0d6ab523a2&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
