1 } – SUNY-Binghamton powers past No. 22 Army 23-10
Bearcats win second match against nationally ranked team
The Binghamton University wrestling team continued to build strong momentum to start the season, taking down No. 22 Army 23-10 Saturday afternoon in West Point. Ignited by a comeback victory by freshman Micah Roes, and capped off with a major decision by Cory Day over No. 17 Ben Sullivan, the Bearcats return home with a 3-0 record and their best start since the 2011-12 season. “That team effort was incredible,” head coach Kyle Borshoff said. “What those guys did out there, it’s hard to do. I need to come up with more adjectives because the only one that comes to my mind is just how incredible that was. I am so proud of our guys. There were four matches listed as “toss ups” and we were able to win all of them. Those added with Day’s upset, leads to the final score you see.”

2 } – Clarion Wrestling Sweeps Home #MACtion against SIUE, Kent
CLARION, Pa. – The Clarion wrestling team evened its season record with an inspired showing on Saturday afternoon, with the Golden Eagles defeating SIU-Edwardsville and Kent State in a doubleheader sweep at Tippin Gymnasium. Clarion (2-2, 2-1 MAC) overcame the Cougars in a close bout, outscoring them 21-15, and followed with a rollercoaster 30-10 win over the Golden Flashes.
The Golden Eagles were looking to respond to an 0-2 start to the season, and it was quickly apparent they were ready to flip the script as they came out loaded for bear. Kyle Schickel, Kolby Ho and Greg Bulsak were the three Golden Eagles to win both of their bouts on Saturday afternoon, with that trio helping Clarion to a narrow win over the Cougars and a larger win over the Golden Flashes. 3 } – No. 6 Mizzou Wrestling Tallies Two MAC Wins Saturday at Hearnes
Tigers improve to 9-0 overall, 3-0 in MAC play
COLUMBIA, Mo. – No. 6 Mizzou Wrestling (9-0, 3-0 MAC) remained perfect overall and in Mid-American Conference duals with a 46-0 shutout win over Ohio, followed by a 24-12 victory over Northern Illinois on Saturday inside the Hearnes Center.
Mizzou’s victory over Ohio marked its first shutout triumph of the season. The Tigers’ 46-point margin of victory was their largest since a 48-0 win over SIU-Edwardsville two seasons ago (Dec. 9, 2018). 4 } – Nebraska Finishes Unbeaten Against Northwestern, Maryland
Seven Huskers finished undefeated on the day as the Nebraska wrestling team earned wins over Northwestern and Maryland Saturday at the Bob Devaney Sport Center. The Huskers (3-1, 3-1 Big Ten) defeated the Wildcats (1-2, 1-2 Big Ten), 26-10, followed by the Terrapins (0-5, 0-5 Big Ten), 36-0. Starting at 125 pounds, Liam Cronin earned a 15-5 major decision win over Northwestern’s Matt Vinci to set the tone for the day. 5 } – NO. 11 OHIO STATE EDGES NO. 17 RUTGERS, 19-14
COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 11 Ohio State won six of 10 matches, including the final two at 197 pounds and heavyweight, respectively, to edge Rutgers 19-14 on Saturday inside the Covelli Center. The Buckeyes improved to 2-1 on the season with the Scarlet Knights are 0-2. Saturday’s dual started at 125 pounds where Malik Heinselman, ranked No. 14 this week by InterMat and No. 16 in FloWrestling, earned a 10-4 decision over 22nd-ranked Nicholas Aguilar. Heinselman scored two first-period takedowns and another as time expired in the second period. He added a riding time bonus point and improved his record to 3-0 on the season. 6 } – BULLDOGS SWEEP PAIR OF SOCON MATCHES
LOUISVILLIE, Ky. – The Citadel wrestling team picked up a pair of Southern Conference victories Sunday. The Bulldogs started the morning with a 32-10 victory over Presbyterian and followed it up with a 27-18 victory over Bellarmine. The Bulldogs improve to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in SoCon action. The Citadel is off to its best conference start since opening the 2014-15 season winning two of the first three matches. CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – No. 13 Iowa State’s (4-1, 1-0 Big 12) matchup with No. 18 Oklahoma (2-2, 1-1 Big 12) came down to the final bout to determine a winner. With the Sooners leading 16-15 heading into the final match, senior Gannon Gremmel came away with a 5-4 decision over Josh Heindselman in TB1, lifting Iowa State to its fourth win of the season.
How it Happened
In the 285-pound match, Gremmel took an early lead, securing a takedown in the first period. After an escape in the second period, Gremmel brought a 3-1 lead into the third period. Heindselman briefly took a 4-3 lead, but Gremmel got to his feet to send the match into overtime. 8 } – Bellarmine Wrestling notches first D1 win in program history
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University wrestling team made history Sunday afternoon in Knights Hall, posting the first Division I duals win — and Southern Conference victory — in program history. After getting clipped 27-18 by The Citadel (4-2, 3-1 SoCon), Bellarmine (1-5, 1-3) regrouped to register a landmark 32-18 win over Presbyterian (0-2, 0-2). The Citadel defeated Presbyterian 32-10 in the tri-meet. “To have our first win at home in front of all the people that support us means a lot,” Knights Coach Spencer Adams said. “The family members of the guys on the team, people from the community, the events management crew, team physician and trainers, our administration and so many others. I’d be in trouble if I didn’t mention my wife and kids who were in the stands as well. To share that win with everyone who makes this program so great is such a good feeling. 9} – Card Races Past Roadrunners
Stanford won seven of 10 bouts
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Posting bonus points in five matches, No. 11/17 Stanford opened the season with a 29-13 Pac-12 win at CSU Bakersfield on Sunday. The Cardinal won seven of the 10 bouts in the dual and was 5-1 in extra matches wrestled on the afternoon. The dual began at 157 pounds, where fifth-year senior captain Requir van der Merwe set the tone with a 13-5 major decision over Brock Rogers. Moving up a weight class this season, van der Merwe looked good on offense, scoring three takedowns and had two near fall points in the win. Redshirt sophomore Tyler Eischens, also wrestling up a weight class from last season, added to the Cardinal lead with a dominating 15-0 technical fall in 5:02 over Braden Smelser at 165 pounds. 10 } – Panthers Ride Momentum to 23-13 Win over Oklahoma
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa –Lance Runyon earned a statement pin over No. 11 Anthony Mantanona, Parker Keckeisen earned a 21-8 major decision in his dual debut and Brody Teske and Carter Isley stayed undefeated on the season to lead UNI to a 23-13 win over Oklahoma, Sunday at the McLeod Center. Teske started the dual with an impressive 12-3 win over Mason Naifeh. Naifeh recorded the first takedown, but Teske dominated the rest of the dual en route to the 12-3 win. Kyle Biscoglia picked up another impressive victory, earning a 3-1 win over No. 11 Anthony Madrigal with a third period escape and takedown.
The Sooners responded with three-straight wins at 141, 149 and 157 to take a 10-7 lead. The Binghamton University wrestling team won eight of 10 bouts, four of which had bonus points, en route to a 32-6 victory over LIU Thursday evening in Vestal. No. 4 Lou DePrez highlighted the team’s strong match, picking up his second straight pin to open the season.
“We wrestled well today and had some big wins by bonus points,” head coach Kyle Borshoff said. “We also had several close matches that we were able to win. The guys have great belief in themselves and believe that they shouldn’t be losing to anybody. If we can keep winning the close ones, we are going to have a really good season.”

12 } – University of Michigan Athletics Enters Department-Wide Activity Pause
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Under a Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) decision made Saturday (Jan. 23), the University of Michigan Athletic Department will immediately pause athletic activities in all sports, including games, team and individual training sessions, until further notice and up to 14 days. While U-M has worked diligently on testing and reporting within state and Big Ten Conference guidelines, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is mandating a more aggressive strategy for this B.1.1.7 variant, which exceeds current program efforts designed around the standard form of the virus.
