TDR Editor’s Notes ; The following are 16 articles involving NAIA schools in their matches and wrestling activities. This is our first entry of NAIA results yet the teams have been fairly active in competition this year. The NAIA was able to complete their National Championship tournament last March. The number of schools with wrestling in the NAIA has grown considerably in recent years. Great to see new teams and growing opportunities for college wrestlers. 1 } – Phoenix Finish the Day Undefeated in the Bobcat Duals
Miami Gardens, Fla.- #6 Cumberland was able to go 2-0 on the day, as the Phoenix were able to defeat Keiser University 46-6, and St. Thomas University, 41-14.

The Phoenix started off in the 285 weight class where Grant Clarkson was able to put points on the board first for the Phoenix as he defeated Earnest Johnson by fall, 3:34 in the match. For the 125 Pacey Najdusak won due to forfeit. Blaine Fussel also won due to forfeit, putting the Phoenix up 18-0 after three matches. Keshawn Law was able to overcome Zachary Fix as he won due to a 16-0 Technical Fall in the 141. 2 } – Men’s Wrestling Notches 37-6 Victory over Fifth-Ranked Southeastern
MARIETTA, Ga. —- The second nationally ranked Life University men’s wrestling team recorded yet another dual match victory, handling fifth-ranked, conference foe Southeastern today in the Eagles’ Nest 37-6. From the early stage’s of the match, Life U quickly set the tone with two upset victories. 3 } – Raiders Sweep Home Duals
The Northwestern College wrestling team finished unbeaten in three home duals held today at the Bultman Center. The Raiders defeated Concordia 28-12 in the opener, earning their first win over the Bulldogs since the 2011-12 season. Northwestern followed with a 53-6 victory against Waldorf and then closed with an impressive showing against Dickinson State, defeating the Blue Hawks 38-4.

“I was proud of they way our guys battled today,” said Northwestern head coach Rik Dahl. “Every team there was shorthanded, but that is the nature of our sport. In times like that, it is important for young men to see the opportunity and rise up. Our guys did that in a big way. Trey Schuck continues to impress with his potent offense and tenacity. Trey Schuck was named the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Wrestler of the Week as announced by the league office earlier today.

Schuck was unbeaten in three matches last week at the Raider Duals. Schuck picked up a technical fall win (16-0) over Alfredo Moreno in leading the Raiders to a resounding 53-6 win over Waldorf. The freshman then pinned 20th-ranked Clay Gerhardt of Dickinson State at the 5:46 mark. 4 } – EAGLES WRESTLING TAKE FIRST AT AMC DUALS
HANNIBAL, Mo. – Williams Baptist wrestling took the top spot at the the AMC Duals this past weekend, beating out Lincoln College, Missouri Baptist, Lyon College, and Central Baptist. In fact, they only lost four total matches the whole day. In their first dual of the day, the Eagles defeated Central Baptist 39-4. Their second dual was against Missouri Baptist, whom they defeated 48-5. In their dual they defeated Lincoln College 42-6. 5 } – Doane College Wrestling Sweeps Home Triangular
Doane Wrestling hosted a triangular on Wednesday evening in Crete as Dakota Wesleyan and Bethany came to town. The Tigers won both, taking their conference match with DWU, 34-12, and topping Bethany in the nightcap, 46-9. Doane improved to 9-2 on the season in duals and 2-0 in the GPAC.
In the opener against DWU, the Tigers took a 16-0 lead through four matches. Michael Scarponi (SO/Temecula, Calif.) opened with a 7-1 decision at 174 followed by a 5-2 decision victory for Garrett Cornwell (JR/Albion, Neb.) at 184. Bradley Antesberger (SO/North Pole, Alaska) collected a 16-4 major decision at 197 and Brandon Antesberger (SO/North Pole, Alaska) won by pin in 4:52 at 285. Doane followed with forfeit wins at 125 and 141 while giving up a forfeit at 133. And Wrestling Wins Four; Remains Unbeaten in GPAC
Doane Wrestling posted a monumental day on the mat Saturday morning as they went 4-0 at the GPAC Duals in Jamestown, N.D. With the wins, the Tigers remained undefeated in GPAC action with one dual remaining and broke the school record for victories in a season. Doane is 14-2 on the season and 7-0 in the GPAC heading into the season finale at GPAC co-leader Morningside. The day opened with Doane taking on fellow Nebraska school, Hastings. The Broncos won three of the first five matches and held a 16-12 lead over the Tigers only to see Doane take the next five matches for a 39-16 win. Hastings was open in five weight classes, accounting for 30 team points for the Tigers. In the second dual, the host Jimmies of Jamestown were in front of the Tigers. Doane won seven of the 10 matches to post a 37-12 victory. 6 } – Dakota Wrestling Tigers pick up first dual victory of the season
CRETE, Neb. – The Dakota Wesleyan University wrestling team headed south to compete in a triangular against No. 12 Doane University and Bethany College. DWU fell to Doane, 34-12 but came away with its first dual win of the season with a 29-9 victory over Bethany Wednesday in Crete, Neb. The night started in the 174-pound weight class as Cole Halouska (Worthing, S.D.) dropped his opening match by a 7-1 decision to Michael Scarponi, the 16th-ranked wrestler in the nation. Hunter Planansky (Hayden, Colo.) took the mat next. 7 } – Late Rally Leads Patriots over Phoenix
Williamsburg, KY – Down by five on the team score line, bonus points in three straight bouts boost the Patriots over cross-divisional rival Cumberland, 25-14. Leading the charge was a ranked win by Gabe Jacobs and a tech by Harold Gilmore to secure the dual. The Phoenix led 14-9 after a major decision at 165 pounds. Jarod Swank proved his ranking – 12th in the NAIA at 174 pounds – with a major decision win of his own to turn the tide of the dual. Swank was first to score against Cumberland’s Austin Antcliffe, scoring three in the first. His time with advantage kept his ride time high, while a third period nearfall put the major out of reach, 15-4. Jacobs gave the Patriots their first lead of the day with a 14-2 major over ninth-ranked John Olivieri. Midway, KY – Patriots pick up their first conference win of the season after downing the Eagles 40-9. Leading the scoring efforts were falls by Harold Gilmore, Chasen Brown and Turner Black.
Gilmore started the dual for the Patriots at 197 pounds, taking a 3-0 lead into the break on a stall call and takedown. The junior out of Alabama maintained control in the second period, noting his third fall of the season. His pin was the Patriots’ fastest on the day, called at 3:51. 8 } – Indiana Tech Men’s Wrestling Takes Down No. 12 Marian 34-12
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Indiana Tech men’s wrestling defeats rival No. 12 Marian 34-12 to remain undefeated for the 2020-21 season.
No. 14 Nathan Orum started the match for the Warriors at 125 facing off against No. 17 Ty Haskins of Marian. Haskins scored the first points of the match with a takedown just a minute into action. Orum gained two points on a reversal and tied the match at 2-2 after the first period. After being on bottom the entire second period, Orum fought back in the third with a quick takedown to lead 4-2 followed by four back points to win the match 8-2 and give Tech a 3-0 lead overall. Josh Goheen-Smith went out to take the forfeit victory at 133 and earn the Warriors six more points to lead the Knights 9-0.
At 141, No. 9 Kyle Kantola took the mat for Tech while No. 11 Blake Mulkey represented Marian. Mulkey started aggressively and recorded three takedowns in the match while Kantola’s only points came from escapes in the 8-3 decision loss, where the Knights recorded their first points of the match. Antwaun Graves represented the Warriors at 149 and faced No. 9 Bailey Moore. It was an even battle with Graves leading 1-0 early. Later in the match, Moore earned an escape point and later received two more for a takedown to win the match 3-1 and earn three points for the Knights. SYLVANIA, Ohio – Indiana Tech men’s wrestling wins their second WHAC match of the season with a 37-7 victory over No. 16 Lourdes. No. 8 Nathan Orum opened the match for the Warriors at 125 against John Novak. The action was stagnant for the majority of the first period until Orum took a shot for a takedown as time was ending in the first period before going out of bounds. They were reset to the middle where Novak escaped for a quick one as time ran out to end the first period 2-1. Novak started on the bottom for the second period and escaped quickly to tie the match at 2-2 for the only points scored in the second. Orum chose bottom for the third and earned a quick reversal for two points before turning Novak on his back for four back points to take an 8-2 lead. Marshall, MO – No. 1 Grand View men’s wrestling traveled to Marshall, Missouri today, January 23, to compete in the Missouri Valley Duals. Over the course of the day, the Vikings defeated receiving votes (RV) Bluefield College 53-0, No. 4 Reinhardt University 39-3, and RV Williams Baptist 52-0. In the victory over RV Bluefield College, the Vikings extended the consecutive collegiate duals won record to 100. 10 } – Southeastern Wrestling Cruises at Brewton-Parker
MT. VERNON, Ga.—Southeastern scored bonus point victories in seven of their eight wins to come away with a 38-9 win at Brewton-Parker Friday night to move to 6-5 on the year.
The Fire were aggressive from the get go, scoring first in each of the first eight matches and didn’t surrender a takedown until the ninth match of the night and just five total takedowns.
Xavier Williamson and Stephen Kelle had pins at 133 and 174, respectively with Williamson needing just 21 seconds to finish his match. 11 } – WRESTLING SWEEPS DUALS OVER CENTRAL CHRISTIAN COLLEGE AND WILLIAM PENN UNIVERSITY
Ravens Wrestling earned a pair of wins at home Tuesday against the Central Christian College Tigers and William Penn University Statesmen. The Ravens dominated the Tigers, winning 51-3, then took down the Statesmen 22-15. The win over Central Christian marked the highest dual score in program history. Johnny Hua got things going against the Tigers, winning by fall in the first period at 125 pounds. That would be a common theme for the Ravens in the match against the Tigers. After Harsh Anchan (141) earned a 16-1 technical fall and Gino Camarca (149) won a 12-4 decision, the Ravens got first-round wins by fall from Michael Lucas (165), Jensen McDermott (174) and Tyson Albright (184). Breaking that streak, slightly, was Jackson Phillips (285) who won by fall in the second period. That rounded out the Ravens 51-3 win.

CLEVELAND, Ga. – Coming off of a dominant win on Friday, the Campbellsville men’s wrestling team picked up a pair of runaway victories Saturday afternoon against Keiser University and Truett McConnell University.
The dual between the Tigers and TMU was the closer of the two matches for CU as they earned a 33-16 win over the Bears in the final dual of the day.
