TDR Editor’s Notes ; Reviewing dual meet matches of top level Division I teams across the country from the west coast in Stanford (#4), to the east coast in Navy (#8), Lehigh (#5), and Penn State (#7). N.C. State(#2), Campbell (#6) and Virginia Tech (#3) in the southeast along with Big 10 powers to the north in Minnesota (#10) and Ohio State (#1) with results from recent weeks. Oklahoma (#9) and West Virginia (#11) are from the mid-lands. Well, while our grographical references may be off, the point is that matches are behind held and a good deal of wrestling action is going on as teams gear up for their conference tournaments.

1 } – BUCKEYES IMPROVE TO 3-1 WITH 24-9 WIN OVER MICHIGAN STATE
COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 6 Ohio State set the tone quick, winning the first four matches, and would roll to a 24-9 win over No. 25 Michigan State on Friday evening inside the Covelli Center. The win improves the Buckeyes to 3-1 on the young season and they will look for a fourth consecutive victory on Sunday when they head to Maryland. Malik Heinselman opened the dual with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over No. 10 Rayvon Foley. 2 } – Three Bonus Point Wins for #3 @PackWrestle in 28-10 Win at #14 UNC
Pack sets new school record with eighth straight win in series
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Three bonus point wins, and 7 of 10 individual wins overall, leads the #3 NC State wrestling team to a 28-10 win over #14 North Carolina Friday night.
The Pack (5-0) got technical falls at both 125 and 157 pounds, and then a pin at 197 pounds in the night’s second-to-last bout. NC State won seven of the 10 matches, including the final four. NC State extends its nation’s leading 22-match winning streak, and the eight straight win for the Pack in the series is a new school record for most consecutive wins vs. North Carolina. The dual started at 125 pounds, and for the third straight ACC dual #4 Jakob Camacho opened the night with bonus points. No. 8 Tech won nine of the 10 matches Friday night
DURHAM, N.C. – After opening the ACC season with a win last week, Virginia Tech wrestling took care of business Friday night, beating Duke 42-3 in the first leg of back-to-back ACC road duals. The No. 8 Hokies (6-0, 2-0 ACC) won nine of the 10 matches, including six bonus-point wins. Bryce Andonian, Mekhi Lewis and Stan Smeltzer all registered falls, Hunter Catka won via technical fall and Collin Gerardi had a major decision. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Fresh off a 42-3 win in Durham Friday night, Virginia Tech wrestling made it two in a row with a 23-9 win over North Carolina Saturday afternoon, stopping a two-match losing streak against the Tar Heels. The No. 8 Hokies (7-0, 3-0 ACC) led the No. 14 Tar Heels (2-2, 1-2 ACC) 11-6 after five matches, but then blew the dual open, winning the last four of five, including a top-10 upset win for Dakota Howard at 174 pounds. Card defeats California Baptist and Cal Poly
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – No. 13/15 Stanford notched a pair of dual wins, Thursday, defeating California Baptist (24-12) and Cal Poly (21-15) at the Mott Athletics Center. Stanford (3-0) moves to 2-0 in the Pac-12 Conference with its win over Cal Poly (2-2, 1-2 Pac-12). CBU drops to 0-4. The Cardinal won seven of the 10 bouts against the Lancers and six of the 10 versus the host Mustangs. Stanford was also 6-2 in extra matches wrestled on the afternoon. Three Cardinal were 2-0 in dual matches – Jackson DiSario at 125 pounds, Requir van der Merwe at 157 pounds and Tyler Eischens at 165 pounds. Cardinal defeats Beavers, falls to Wolverines
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Stanford closed out the regular season, Sunday, defeating host Oregon State, 19-16, before falling to Utah Valley, 19-16, at Gil Coliseum. The Cardinal (5-3) finished undefeated in Pac-12 Conference duals at 4-0 and won its fourth straight dual against the Beavers. Oregon State dropped to 4-5 overall and 2-1 in the Pac-12, while Utah Valley moved to 2-2. Trailing 16-13 going into the final bout against the Beavers, who lost a team point due to unsportsmanlike conduct, fifth-year senior Nathan Traxler recorded a first period fall over Brian Barnes at heavyweight to seal the win for the Cardinal. 5 } – Senior Upperweights Help Lehigh Rally Past No. 25 Binghamton 19-16
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh sent out first or second year wrestlers in seven of their first eight bouts Saturday against No. 25 Binghamton but fifth-year seniors Jake Jakobsen and Jordan Wood stepped up when it mattered most, closing the dual with a major decision and fall, respectively, to lead the Mountain Hawks to a 19-16 win over the Bearcats inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. Trailing by three heading into the final bout, Wood, back on the roster after initially planning an Olympic deferral, pinned Cory Day in the third period to lead Lehigh (1-2) to its first victory of the season. BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh wrestling team capped a 2-0 weekend at home with a dominant performance in a 46-0 blanking of LIU Sunday inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. The Mountain Hawks recorded four falls and added three additional bonus point victories on the way to their first shutout in nearly five years.
Lehigh had a 28-0 edge in takedowns and allowed just two offensive points, a reversal in the final bout of the dual. Four Mountain Hawks posted their first career victories in the brown and white while two others won for the first time in dual competition.

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Campbell extended its Southern Conference dual winning streak to 14 with wins over The Citadel and Davidson Saturday at McAlister Field House. The Camels (6-1, 5-0 SoCon) topped The Citadel (4-3, 3-2 SoCon) 34-7 to open the day’s action, then blanked Davidson (1-4, 1-4 SoCon) 45-0 for their second shutout win of the year. Campbell jumped out to a 12-0 lead and never trailed against The Citadel. Penn State rolls to 29-13 victory to finish off opening day with a second B1G dual win
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State Nittany Lions (2-0, 2-0 B1G), ranked No. 3 in the latest InterMat Tournament Power Index, routed host Northwestern (1-4 1-4 B1G) in the final dual of a Big Ten tri-meet in NU’s Welsh-Ryan Arena. Penn State won seven bouts on its way to a 29-13 road victory. The dual closed out the event hosted by Northwestern in Evanston, Ill. The dual began at 125 where Penn State did not have any competitors cleared to compete this weekend. Northwestern’s No. 8 Michael DeAugustino picked up the forfeit victory to give the Wildcats a 6-0 lead out of the gates. Junior Roman Bravo-Young (Tucson, Ariz.), ranked No. 3 at 133, dominated Dylan Utterback. Bravo-Young rolled up seven takedowns in the first two periods before pinning Utterback at the 3:48 mark. UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State Nittany Lions (3-0, 3-0 B1G), ranked No. 3 in the latest InterMat Tournament Power Index, took care of homestanding Wisconsin (1-4, 1-4) in their third straight road dual in a five-day Big Ten road swing. Head coach Cael Sanderson‘s squad won all nine contested bouts on its way to a lopsided 34-6 victory over the Badgers in Madison.
The dual meet was originally scheduled for this coming weekend as part of a tri-meet at Michigan. But the Wolverines have paused all athletic activities, postponing the event in Ann Arbor. 8 } – 24th-Ranked Mids Pitch 37-0 Shutout Over Cleveland State
The 24th-ranked Navy wrestling team (3-1, 1-0 EIWA) opened its dual Saturday evening against Cleveland State (0-2, 0-0 Mid-American) with a 4-2 win by senior 125-pound Logan Treaster and never looked back, as the Mids won all 10 bouts en route to a 37-0 victory over the visiting Vikings at Alumni Hall. It was Navy’s first shutout since blanking George Mason 43-0 on Feb. 6, 2018. “It a nice win, a nice shutout,” said first-year Navy head coach Cary Kolat, whose Mids broke into the national rankings this week for the first time since 2017. “We’ve got more to do. We had some team goals coming into this dual that we wanted to accomplish technically on the mat with each guy. I think we missed the mark on some of that stuff, so we’ve gotta continue to keep trying to improve on that. LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The 22nd-ranked Oklahoma wrestling team earned an unblemished 3-0 record at the Little Rock quad-dual after defeating Little Rock, South Dakota State and No. 21 Stanford in dual action. The Sooners were especially good at the heavier weights, compiling a 12-3 record on the day in all weight classes above 165.
“It was a good day of wrestling for us, any time you can get three wins it is a good day,” head coach Lou Rosselli said after improving to 5-3 in 2021. “I think that Stanford is a pretty good team, South Dakota State is always tough and Little Rock has some guys that can present some challenges, so we are happy to get out of here with three victories. PISCATAWAY, NJ – The No. 12 Gopher wrestling team (4-2) defeated No. 18 Purdue, 32-4, and No. 17 Rutgers, 21-18, in a Big Ten tri-meet on Sunday in Piscataway, N.J. Minnesota earned its 12th straight win against the Boilermakers and improved to 5-0 all-time against the Scarlet Knights.
Five Gophers went 2-0 on the day including sophomore Patrick McKee and senior Owen Webster. Ranked ninth in the country at 125 pounds, McKee upset No. 6 Devin Schroder of Purdue by a score of 5-4. He followed that with a pin of No. 15 Nic Aguilar of Rutgers. At 184 pounds, Webster upset a pair of ranked opponents. MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 10 Gopher wrestling team (5-2) won five of the last six matches to defeat No. 13 Illinois (4-2), 25-13, on Friday night at Maturi Pavilion. Fifth-year senior Owen Webster upset No. 7 Zac Braunagel at 184 pounds, while top-ranked heavyweight Gable Steveson pinned sixth-ranked Luke Luffman in just 34 seconds to close out the dual. Sophomore Patrick McKee gave the Gophers an early 3-0 lead with a 4-2 decision against No. 13 Justin Cardani at 125 pounds. 11 } – Mountaineers Upset No. 17 Northern Colorado
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Topping its first ranked opponent since the 2018-19 season, the West Virginia University wrestling team took down No. 17 Northern Colorado in a 25-11 contest on Sunday afternoon, inside the WVU Coliseum, in Morgantown.
Trailing 8-0 to start the match, West Virginia won seven of the last eight bouts to move to 5-2 on the year and 1-1 in Big 12 action. WVU also topped its four-match win total from 2019 and 2020 – coach Tim Flynn‘s first two seasons at the helm of the Mountaineer wrestling program.
No. 1 Noah Adams, a redshirt junior, showed how dominant he could be by earning a 13-1 major decision over No. 16 Jacob Seely to put the Mountaineers on the board. The Coal City, West Virginia, native put on a clinic in the second period, scoring a takedown and four nearfall points for the 9-1 advantage. Adams scored his third takedown in the final frame and forced two stall calls for the extra point. There are currently 11 dual meets between ranked opponents this week. Six are Big Ten dual meets, two are Big 12 dual meets, two are within the ACC and the other is a non-conference match. The ACC ranked match is a rivalry dual, as No. 3 NC State hosts No. 14 North Carolina on Friday. North Dakota State (2-2, 1-1 Big 12) returns to the wrestling mat for the first time in nearly three weeks against Big 12 foe Fresno State (0-1) and non-conference opponent California Baptist (0-3) this Saturday, Jan. 30, in Riverside, Calif. NDSU faces Fresno State at 11 a.m. PT followed by California Baptist at 3 p.m. PT in the Van Dyne Gym. The NDSU-CBU dual will be streamed live on WACDigitalNetwork.com.
