TDR Editor’s Notes ; A look over some results from Division I matches as the teams are scrambling to get in enough dual meets in order to qualify for their conference tournaments and the national championships next month in St. Louis. 1 } – Nebraska Defeats Wisconsin, Finishes 2021 Undefeated at Devaney
The Nebraska wrestling team ended its 2021 home slate in dramatic fashion, winning the final two matches against Wisconsin to earn a 21-15 win on Sunday at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. The Huskers (4-1, 4-1 Big Ten) finish undefeated at home for the first time since the 2007-08 season during which the team also hosted just four matches. With Nebraska trailing the Badgers (1-3, 1-3 Big Ten) 13-15, Eric Schultz kick started the comeback with a 30-13 technical fall over Andrew Salemme at 197 pounds. The senior dominated the match, recording 14 takedowns in 5:55 for his tenth technical fall of his career.
Christian Lance sealed the deal at heavyweight with a 4-2 sudden victory walk-off win over Trent Hillger. AND Huskers Go Undefeated in Indiana Tri-Meet
The Nebraska wrestling team earned its first road wins of the season on Saturday, defeating Indiana, 47-0, and Michigan State, 27-10, in Bloomington, Ind. The Huskers improve to 6-1 on the season as they head into the final scheduled dual of the season against Illinois. The Huskers’ shutout of the Hoosiers marks the first time since the 2011-12 season that that NU has held two opponents scoreless in a single season. The Huskers previously defeated Maryland, 36-0, this season.
Mikey Labriola (174 pounds) and Eric Schultz (197 pounds) both went unbeaten on the day to remain undefeated through seven duals this season. 2 } – No. 21 Navy Defeats the Patriots
2/5/2021 10:47:00 PMThe No. 21 Navy wrestling team proved their national ranking with a 44-0 win against the Patriots in a dual tonight inside Alumni Hall in Annapolis, Md. The Midshipmen have won four straight matches and improve to 4-1 on the season. The Patriots fall to 0-3.
The teams wrestled a traditional 10-bout, team-scored dual while the two programs also wrestled extra matches that count towards an individual’s season record. The two teams split the extra 14 matches. Sophomore Josh Jones had a tech fall against Navy’s Caleb Kelley, 16-0 (1:15). A pair of freshman earned wins. Tyler Johnson had a fall against Navy’s Tyler Hunt, (1:42) and Eli Dickens earned a major decision over Shane Finney, 15-7. 3 } – Huskies Fall to No. 16 Northern Iowa
NIU unable to overcome slow start
DEKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University wrestling team suffered a 27-9 setback to No. 16 Northern Iowa in its lone home dual at the Convocation Center Friday night. “We had a tough, hard-fought dual,” said NIU head coach Ryan Ludwig. “Congratulations to the guys that had their hand raised. Gibson, Olejnik and Mason [Kauffman] put together three nice matches for us. Olejnik and Kauffman both had wins over nationally-ranked opponents, so great for their profile. “We have to continue to make some adjustments in the setups of our shots and some of our mat work. It was great to get this kind of feel and challenge at this time of the year. We’re going to learn from it and move forward.”
After Northern Iowa raced out to an 18-0 lead following back-to-back pins and a pair of decisions, Anthony Gibson put the Huskies on the board with a solid 7-3 victory Cayd Lara at 157. Izzak Olejnik followed that up with a 6-4 come-from-behind win over Pat Schoenfelder, who is ranked No. 25 by Trackwrestling, at 165. 4 } – Wrestling Finishes Up Season Opener at Sacred Heart on Friday, Winning 13 of 18
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – In its long-awaited season opener, the Drexel University wrestling team opened its 2020-21 campaign on the road against the Sacred Heart University Pioneers on Friday, Feb. 5 in Connecticut, squaring off in a nontraditional dual matchup. There were 18 individual matches scheduled in Fairfield on Friday as the Dragons picked up wins in 13 of them. Bouts started at 165 pounds and Drexel was especially dominate from 125 pounds to 157 pounds, winning nine of 11 to close out the opener. Evan Barczak garnered the first victory for Drexel, a 19-0 technical fall, at 165 pounds. Michael O’Malley and Natty Lapinski kept the streak going at 174 pounds. 5 } – Bonus Points Key Chippewa Wrestling Win At Cleveland State
CMU’s Drew Hildebrandt recorded a first-period pin on Friday, sparking Central Michigan to a dual-meet victory at Cleveland State.
CLEVELAND – Never doubt the importance of bonus points when it comes to college wrestling. Central Michigan and Cleveland State split their 10 matches, but the Chippewas scored bonus points in three of their victories for the difference in a 21-15 Mid-American Conference dual victory at the Vikings’ Woodling Gymnasium. The Chippewas improved to 3-2. Cleveland State is 0-3. It was the Chippewas’ biggest guns who delivered. Fourth-ranked Drew Hildebrandt won on a first-period pin to open the dual at 125 pounds; 12th-ranked Dresden Simon posted a 16-1 technical fall at 141; and fourth-ranked Matt Stencel took a 13-3 major decision at 285. BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Central Michigan wrestling team won 18 of 20 matches on Sunday in posting a pair of dominating Mid-American Conference dual victories at Buffalo’s Alumni Arena. The Chippewas downed Edinboro, 30-6, and then topped the host Bulls, 40-0, posting their first shutout over a Division I program since a 33-0 win over Michigan State on Dec. 6, 2015.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 20 Virginia wrestling team (3-2, 2-2 ACC) closed out the home portion of its 2021 schedule on Friday (Feb. 5), picking up a 42-3 victory over Duke (0-4, 0-4 ACC) at Memorial Gym.
Virginia got five bonus-point victories on the night, using four pins and a forfeit to power their way to the dual victory over the Blue Devils. In all, the Cavaliers won nine weight classes in the dual. The match started with a decision from Patrick McCormick (Poquoson, Va.) at 125 pounds before back-to-back pins from Louie Hayes (Orland Park, Ill.) and Brian Courtney (Athens, Pa.). Duke picked up its one victory over the night with a decision from Josh Finesilver at 149 pounds. Hempstead, NY – Redshirt senior Ricky Stamm went 3-0 on the day, including a win at a higher weight class, as Hofstra wrestling took on Bloomsburg and Drexel from inside the David S. Mack Physical Education Center on Saturday, February 6. The Pride won in a convincing 41-6 result over the Huskies of Bloomsburg, pushing Hofstra’s dual-meet record to 2-1, while they won six of 12 matches against the Dragons.
Junior Dylan Ryder scored the first points of the day for Hofstra with his second win by fall of the season at 125 pounds by way of pin at 5:19 of the match. Fairfield, CT – Hofstra wrestling put on a dominating performance on the mat against Sacred Heart Tuesday night from the William H. Pratt Center. Of the 14 matches held, Hofstra won 13 of them and picked up three wins by fall and three wins by tech fall. Redshirt senior Vinny Vespa snapped a two-match losing streak by scoring a 5-1 decision at 141 pounds, starting a run of 12 straight wins for Hofstra. Sophomore Justin Hoyle picked up the first of two wins in the evening with a pin of Vincent Milazzo at 141 pounds. In the second period, Hoyle used his top position to manipulate Milazzo onto his back and secured the pin. COLUMBIA, Mo. – No. 6 Mizzou Wrestling (10-0, 4-0 MAC) defeated SIUE 35-3 on Sunday afternoon inside the Hearnes Center, finishing its 2021 dual season with a perfect overall and Mid-American conference record.
